Whitey Bulger Once Pulled A Gun On Chris Nilan Before Taking His Then Step-Daughter On A Date

Whitey Bulger was in league with the FBI. FBI turned a blind eye to his crimes because he informed on opposing gangs. Basically the FBI would let his gang steal, prostitute and murder as long as they got a cut and information was given that let the FBI have blackmail on those other gangs.

I remember reading somewhere that Whitey Bulger crossed the border to watch a 2011 SCF game in Vancouver (FBI was on his tail by then).

His whole story is so crazy that you would think it was outlandish if you encountered it in a work of fiction.
Listen to the chiclets interview. R.a asks him about this

Nilan as I understand it is from Boston and as such he would have known who Bulger was, you'd have to be crazy for even asking the stepdaughter of a known psychopathic murderer out on a date. Although Knuckles was never known for his stunning intellectual abilities, it was even for him a really dumb thing to do, unless of course he's one of those guys who grew up idolizing mobsters and wanting to join a crew.

Perhaps he didn’t know until later on they were related and since he liked her her didn’t step away?

I haven't been keeping up with Chiclets recently, but caught this one. Was one of my favorite interviews to say Nilan is an interesting character is an understatement.

Bulger was a known criminal but not a known murderer at that time. Nilan had discussed this previously. His experience is not unique and when you are from an area that has strong organized crime woven into the fabric of the neighborhood you are bound to have a connection even if not partaking in the life yourself. This was not uncommon in places like NYC, Boston, Chicago, etc.

Just read whitey's stoy on wiki.

What a crazy and wild life that guy lived.

Also what a terrible way to die. Woof

Bulger was the inspiration for the Jack Nicholson character in The Departed.

Exactly. Ex's family owns a restaurant in the North End. Our kids participated in the Festivals every summer. Hung out with mob kids all summer long, didn't know it, didn't care, they were just their "summer friends" as far as they knew. I went to high school with Raymond Patriacha's grandson. He got picked up every Friday in limo, with armed guards. It was just normal.

Ive lived here my whole life. It was like the wild west in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

Great read for anyone interested.

Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob by Dick Lehr

and yes, Nilan was quite familiar with Bulger and “family”.

same where I grew up, and I knew who all the players were by the time I was a young teen which was 1970, some of those people were truly dangerous and quite capable of taking a life.

As far a Bulger goes he was known around South Boston as an enforcer for the Killeens by the early 70's, and then the Winter Hill gang by the mid 70's at least according to Kevin Weeks book "Brutal." I'm sure a tough street kid like Nilan would've known who was who.

The guy was a sociopath. Very interesting story though. I'm obviously a sucker for Boston crime movies and TV shows, so I know a lot of the background on Whitey, Flemmi, Weeks, and the Patriarca's (mainly Anguilo's/North End in relation to Whitey).
