I think this team is going to throw down more than most expect. Dubas calling them out, the reality of age that some face and how much time they have left to win their dream, the addition of Simmonds and Bogosian, the internal competition that will prod players to try to leap past by contributing however they can, a large number being on one year contracts and trying to prove, again, in whatever way they can, and hopefully, a maturity that realizes that they've got to stick up for each other. I'm not suggesting they will be the second coming of the Broad Street Bullies, but I strongly believe they'll be far more aggressive in the fight department than they were last year (8 tilts led by Clifford with 3). I'm guessing the following drop 'em:

*Bogosian - 3 during the season...the rest just by number.
*Simmonds - 3
*Dermott - 2
*Hyman - 2
*Muzzin - 2
*Holl - 2
*Rielly - 1
*Vesey - 1
*Thornton - 1
*Spezza - 1
*Tavares - 1
*Campbell - 1 (just a gut feeling, I think he'll do it for the team)
*My totally off the wall, are you friggin' kidding me pick, is William Nylander. Ya, I know, I said it. No take backs.

I'm in with a total of 21. I could be a million miles off, but even if they double from last year, I think the team will be more cohesive and tougher to play, especially in the playoffs.

Believe it or not but I can see Matthews having a fight or two this year and if anything, I think it'll benefit him. A man his size should be able to defend himself instead of relying on smaller players to jump in. I'm not saying Matthews should be an enforcer in any way but I'd love to see him go after players who lay out one of our players.

You watch Tampa in the playoffs and there wasn't one player who didn't shy away from the physicality and were always there to jump in. Kucherov, Point, Stamkos, etc were always involved in scuffles. If the Leafs wish to be a serious contender, they need every player to realize it's a TEAM sport and everyone needs to be in it together and shouldn't have to rely on Jason Spezza being the one to drop the gloves to try to motivate them

I’d be surprised if they hit double digits.

There’s pretty rarely a real reason to fight anyway, so I’m more focused on whether they fight when they should.

Do you really want Matthews not on the ice for 5:00 minutes because he got into a fight?

Close .. Holl does not fight but he will stand up for a teammate and wressle which he did in a game I saw against Wings .. Vesey could pick up Holl's 2 fights though he has a nasty Boston brawler attitude which I like about him he won't go looking for one but he will engage if you want ta go .. Simmonds Muzzy Bogo and Dermy will go in a flick of a switch

And that's exactly what's wrong with this fan base. We fail to realize what it takes to win. Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, etc are generational players who have dropped the gloves when needed and guess what, it's earned them that much more respect from it's peers and teammates.

I'd much rather have Matthews go after someone who ran Marner then just ignore it and let every team know you can run our players without consequences.

Let’s hope they invest enough in their intensity that they are forced into scrums after the whistles and don’t let teams take liberties in front of both nets.

Let's say Matthews gets into a fight and breaks his hand on a visor like @TheKrebsCycle said. How long until our fans start to complain and ask why did Matthews even get into a fight?

And let's say Marner gets ran and Matthews steps up and goes after the guy and doesn't break his hand. What message would that send to the team? If your star player is out there fighting for his teammates, you bet your ass is going to make everyone else step up and play harder. Like the post above, toughness needs to come from the leaders of this team, not 4th liners.

So how come during the 2016-17 season when Frederik Andersen got ran over we didn't see Matt Martin, Leo Komarov, or Roman Polak who were playing in this game did not do anything to get revenge for what happened?

It's not like Matthews has not been involved during scrums with other players, like when the Leafs and Canucks had that brawl during the 2016-17 season since he was on the ice when Ryan Miller went after Matt Martin.

How about we start with baby steps and just ask Auston lay someone out once every few games?

Thank you for proving my point. It's exactly why the players on this team need to become men and realize it's not just about skill but heart and passion. I'll give you an example, I'm 35 years old so during my time, my all time favorite leaf players are Clark and Gilmour. Two of the best all time leafs and you want to know what made them so special, it's because they played with heart and passion. They had all the skill in the world but it was that passion, that fight that made them that much more great. I didn't see anyone worried about Clark breaking his hand during a fight, I didn't see anyone worried about Gilmour getting hurt for fighting. No, instead they hit, they fought, they did what it takes to win and until our core of Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Rielly, Tavares realize that it takes exactly that to win, well then this team will never be successful

I would like to see Matthews (or Tavares) fight and impose his size/strength on others in general. Toughness needs to come from the top down not fringe NHL'ers.

Like when Sundin was captain? Were those Leafs teams not "tough"?

edit: For the record, I do wish Matthews played a tougher game, I just don't know that fighting is what is required of him.

You really want to say Matthews was involved in that scrum, if anything, that video shows exactly what I'm talking about. Ben Hutton for god sakes is grabbing him and he's trying to get away, won't even drop his stick nevermind gloves.

Sundin didn't take shit, even if he didn't dish it out. Our star players do fly-bys and avoid conflict like nobody's business. Sundin also fought (albeit terribly) a few times and would always grab someone during a scrum. I don't expect Matthews to drop the gloves with some duster, but if he fought a heat of the moment scrap against someone like Giordano I'd be happy that he showed a pulse. Need to inject some emotion into the bench sometimes.

Actually my point was during that game the Leafs actually had players who would be considered tough so Matthews and Marner wouldn't need to fight. However despite Andersen getting injured that never happened.

Now maybe it did not since that was the game Toronto clinched their playoff spot in 2017 and Babcock didn't want them doing anything stupid to jeopardize that from happening.

So.
How bout they wrap him in bubble wrap and just let him watch?
He should be safe enough then.
It's one thing if Matthews got hurt during a game like when he collided with Morgan Rielly during the 2017-18 season and suffered a concussion because of that.

However I think it's more of a risk with him hurting his hand during a fight or falling down on the ice afterwards and hitting his head.

I want this:

Count the hall of famers in this one incident. Some punching, many protecting, and everyone is on the same page: "Don't try to push us around!"
