6 nations, sorry Slovakia. Round-robin with all teams. Top 2 play a best of three to decide cup winner.

Not that hard. They already has it figured out in 1976:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1976_Canada_Cup#Standings

Make the 6th place team play Slovakia before the next World Cup to qualify.

Yeah this sounds pretty interesting.
I have always liked the round robin idea (with top 6), with the addition of a final for the two is fair - maybe have that best of 3 include the game they played in the round robin already?
Well, I believe that we should have NHLers going to the Olympics + keeping world cup in order for this to exist, because if we only have a World Cup, we would need another format to include more teams. The World Cup can stay as an elite-cup with that addition of the 6th placed team of last WC having to qualify

Team Scandinavia could work.. Keep the three crowns to symbolize the three kingdoms: Sweden, Denmark and Norway. I guess keep calling it Sweden because there would only be Swedish players.. and we used to own both countries.. Idk.. Finland can probably help us with some players since we used to own them as well and to my knowledge they still have to learn Swedish in school making communication easier.

Or go with the current format but exclude Europe and NAT in favor of Switzerland and Slovakia... That could work too..

NA vs. Europe. Best of 5 or 7.

I like this.

Unless the NHL doesn't go to the Olympics. Then it should be the top 8 countries, according to IIHF rankings. The format can be the same as this year - two groups of four teams, top two advance to semis. Final is best of 3.

The most balanced possible:

Canada East (Quebec + Crosby, Mackinnon, Marchand)
Ontario
Canada West
USA
Finland
Sweden
C.I.S.-Russia
Europe (now including Czechia)

Teams based on language:
English speaking players
French
Swedish
Finnish
Russian
Czech
Slovak
German

Canada
USA
Sweden
Russia
Finland
Czech Republic
Slovakia
Switzerland

This would probably be the safest route, and probably what I would choose.

From a pure comedy stand point, it'd be fun to see either Team North America Snubs, and a Team Europe Snubs. Or just u23 Americans, and u23 Canadians.

8 teams, with a short round robin tourney amongst IIHF-placed rank 7-10 (Current Switzerland, Slovakia, Belarus & Germany) played a year before the tourney around the same time. Top 2 get to go.

If for laughs and giggles:

-Western Canada U19
-Eastern Canada, aged 27 players only. It's a peak year for most hockey players so can't be too bad.
-Canadian Territories & Alaska (with an enforced top line of Cheechoo, Tootoo & Gomez)
-Continental USA. All goaltenders & defensemen must be from Hawaii.
-Nordic Flag Countries, and enforced so that each country with a Nordic Flag has to have either one forward line, D-pairing or goaltender play in every game. Including Iceland, the Faroe & Aland Islands. Can still bring top 4 Swedish D and a Finnish, Norwegian and Danish top 3 lines, but the fourth line, bottom pairing and goaltending will be woeful.
-USSR countries O43, for those who were 18 and over when the USSR collapsed
-Southern Hemisphere
-Mongolia, with an expedited naturalization program including generous exemptions

A good split would be by their junior leagues. Could add more fuel to which league produces the best talent.
- WHL
- OHL
- QMJHL
- NCAA
- KHL
- FEL
- SEL

One league would have Kovalchuck, Datsyuk, Radulov...

10-0 against NCAA/WHL.

Top 6

Canada
USA
Russia
Sweden
Finland
Czech

Play round robin. Top 2 play best of 5 in the final

Bottom 2 teams from round robin compete in another qualifying round robin with the next group of nations (Slovakia, Switzerland, Norway, Slovenia). Top 2 from qualifying compete in next World Cup

I'd just have four teams.

Canada
USA
Russia
Europe

Round robin and three game series for semifinals + finals

If gimmicks are a thing... Russia kinda gets a bit screwed here I suppose

British Columbia
Alberta
Saskatchewan
Manitoba
Ontario
Greater Toronto Area
Quebec
Maritime Provinces
Minnesota
Michigan
Massachusetts
New York

Canada
USA
Sweden
Russia
Finland
Czech Republic
Slovakia
Switzerland

I am also for this, real teams. I do not like the funny teams.

But if we look at that, the possibility of "funny" teams then I like these.

Quebec I have a soft spot for as it is a nation within a state. Minnesota is not that.

Otherwise if Czech and Slovakia agreed in general terms on being Czechoslovakia in hockey I would be all for it - it would not be a funny team.

Perhaps A German-speaking team to, Swiss, Austria and Germany. They would actually have a decent team (no top team, but competitive).
