Which 6 or 8 teams would you have in your World Cup?

The top 8 nations according to the last 4 WHC's (given that this "world cup" thing takes place every 4 years).

But that would mean it has to be organized with different leagues in mind, so it can't be a preseason tournament anymore (season is already ongoing here in europe). Maybe the NHL learns to schedule with an international calendar in mind?

If the NHL want to keep it more or less NA only with as excusively NHL as possible (in no order):
Canada
USA
Russian NHL players
Swedish NHL players
Finnish NHL players
Czech NHL players
Team Mars (bunch of guys from europe or so)
Team Hollow Earth (bunch of guys that didnt make Canada)

What about team " we have been part of the british empire or had british soldiers fighting on our land once"?
Everyone against Sweden, seems fair to me. A best of seven series.

British have invaded all but 22 countries on earth. That includes Finland after the independence.

The 7 top countries in IIHF and a rest of world team to honor players like Kopitar who deserve a spot in this tournament. Sure it's bee a blast watching U23 NA but it is screwing over the US who doesn't have the talent of Canada and falls a step below the second tier countries like Sweden Russia and Finland who aren't losing youth. This tournament was not fair to the US.

Having set that, Lombardi probably would have ignored Gaudreau, Eichel, and Ghost because he hates skill.

Barkov, Granlund, Rinne, Ristolainen, Laine, Zuccarello, Nielsen...would make it
 
Do an age based tournament:

1981-1982
1983-1984
1985-1986
1987-1988
1989-1990
1991-1992
1993-1994
1995-1996

Or even do a provincial type tournament for Canada.

Oh and if they continue to do it internationally:

1. Canada
2. Sweden
3. Russia
4. Czech Republic
5. USA
6. Finland
7. Slovakia
8. Switzerland
 
This thing of splitting some nations into fractions and bundling others together is insulting to the latter group. Sweden, Finland, Russia and the Czechs are good enough to win the World Cup by themselves, against the best the US and Canada has to offer in total, so why do this?

This should be an interesting best-on-best tournament idea

Team over 35 - (the best players over 35)
Team under 23 - the best players 23 and under)
Team Europe - (best players from Europe, who are not being used in the other teams)
Team North america - ( the best players from north america, who are not being used in the other teams)
Team September -best players born in September)
Team Women ( best female players )
Team Race - (the best non Caucasian players)
Team ZZ Top - (the best players with large beards (Thornton, Burns))

Alberta
BC

Would watch 10/10 every time.

And would still love to watch a 7-game Canada vs. World series. I pray to the Hockey Gods that this happens some day.

Well, if we continue like this year, then:

1. Team Nordic
2. Team Rest of Europe (including Russia)
3. Team Europe u24
4. Team Canada
5. Team USA
6. Team North America u24

If sanity returns, then a six national teams' tournament with one preliminary group (5 games each), semis and the final (maximum 7 games).
