Where does Quick rank as the best NHL goalie of all-time?

I'm already at the last stage of grief in regards to this season, so I wanted to ask something that has been on my mind and someone we can talk about and still enjoy while he is still with us.

In your most non-biased opinion, where does Quick rank all-time among NHL goalies?

Top 10? 20? 50?

His stats suggest he is almost certainly a top-50 goalie ever to play the game. Beyond top-20, and I think people start throwing in the "Osgood factor".

Personally, I think he will end up around top 16-25 all time as long as he can complete 2 more slightly-above-average seasons.

Thoughts while we still can? (Except 'that guy'... go somewhere else with your non-sense.)

So many hockey fans, both on this website and elsewhere lament the death of stand-up/reaction-based goal-tending in favour of the static, positionally sound blockers like Bishop, Price, and Dubnyk and etc. Through that transition it's odd to me that Quick hasn't gotten more recognition for his "exciting" style. He's unfairly hated, because he's sort of a Hextall/Roy throwback in terms of temperament. Posters here whine about the game being emotionless while at the same time ****ing on JQ cause he plays for a team they don't like. It's bizarre hypocrisy, and it's hurt his reputation somewhat.

He's certainly the best Kings goalie of all-time, and I think he'll be fairly recognized as better than Richter and Barrasso and Brimsek as the best American tender when the dust settles.

He's a guy where even when he gets pulled, I never doubt his preparation or commitment. Played a hell of a series last year against LV but didn't get any support at all, either from his teammates or the league. That one will go down as a missed opp. for everyone involved.

Quick is the best Kings goalie of all time. Off the top of my head the guys I have seen play in no particular order:

Hasek
Roy
Tony Esposito
Dryden
Bernie Parent
Brodeur (grudgingly)

then maybe Quick. I don't think Quick gets the recognition he deserves. If Blake somehow manages to trade Quick to a contender and that team wins a Stanley Cup, Quick might get the credit he deserves.

He gets complimented on his style tho

I can agree with all of the above. Maybe top 20. His biggest problem is a lack of consistency and longevity. Insane peak, historic runs, two cups, but him and Crawford get the "Osgood" label totally unfairly. Best American goalie of all time, but if he could give the league 5 more good to great years, he'd help his legacy a lot.

I think having Roy, Hasek, Brodeur around all at once sort of wrecked the curve since they were head and shoulders over most of their peers most years, not so much in this era. Only guy with longevity and consistency has been Hank, only guys with similar peaks have been Price, Hank, Thomas (even shorter burnout), maybe Bobrovsky.

Literally renovated the position with the reverse VH as well, and did well in a time when him and Thomas were the only successful 'battlers' while everyone was off praising boring ass percentage butterfly goalies as the best thing since sliced bread. HM to Hank here too for relying more on reflexes and playing deep in his own net.

Can you imagine if Quick were in, say, Toronto?

I can imagine Quick in Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary, and maybe some other cities. Any of those three teams, and especially Toronto, would become greater threats to win a cup if they had Quick.

The greatest goalies of all time is always tough as none of us saw Vezina, Hall, Bauer, etc., and the game has changed so much.

I meant in terms of exposure. We were a media darling for exactly one playoff run, then we were public enemy #1.

He's the modern Hasek.

I want to agree with this with every fiber of my being but some can make the argument for best ever for Hasek. He wasn't just famous because he was unconventional, he absolutely smashed on everyone in his prime. He had consecutive years of .930 .930 .920 .930 .932 .937 and has the highest save percentage of all time...imagine if he would have retired earlier!

I'm skeptical of save percentage in and of itself of course, just saying. Hasek is the GOAT to me, and as much as I love Quick, he doesn't hold a candle, maybe Hasek lite. In terms of saying "f*** you I'm doing it this way" and winning, absolutely.

That's fair. If the Kings didn't have multiple player melt downs and they were still great Quick would be in those years of greatness like Hasek. They designed their team around Hasek, when you went to Buffalo you were not going to get any easy goals, it would be a battle. That also used to be the Kings. The other thing with Quick is I never saw anybody play that style of goalie and now I'm seeing it in pickup and beer leagues. Guys are sliding on their pads side to side and doing the VH or whatever, for the most part non pro goalies all play the same plop and stop style and now I'm seeing Quick being copied. Quick has forever changed the goalie position like Hasek in that you're gonna see unconventional stuff which is good for the game.
