where do you guys think larkin ranks among centers

to me hes just outside of the top 10, in that 11-15 range.

He's def a 1c, just not a top 3rd 1c. I'd buy someone telling me he was top 20 but not top 15. I'd guess he'd be like the 24-27th best C in the NHL.

16-20 for me. what's your argument of him being just outside the top 10?

put up some pretty crazy on ice numbers this year. with larkin on the ice the red wings were the equivalent of the 6th best corsi team in the league, with him off they were the equivalent of the worst. played difficult minutes with bad teammates as well. him and mantha carried detroit's on ice numbs pretty hard while the rest of the team suffered (there is other scoring talent on the team but no real play drivers besides those two). scoring wise lark was respectable as well, but scoring is what keeps him out of the top 10 for me.

DBF, which of these centres do you think he's better than?

11-15 range seems high.

McDavid
Crosby
MacKinnon
Malkin
Barkov
Bergeron
Matthews
Eichel
Point
Stamkos
Tavares
Giroux
Scheifele
Aho
Seguin
Kuznetsov
Backstrom
Couturier
O'Reilly
Couture

Those are 20 names.

I might put him in the bottom third of the top 30.

If Detroit had a halfway competent PP, he'd likely have put up 80-85 this year. His ES production is pretty damn good.

That and I'm beginning to think he's one of the best clutch players in the league. He scores when it matters.

eh he was like a 1.5 p1/60 guy thats more borderline first line stuff. i think hed score more with better/more consistent linemates tho.

i was more countering the point that his ES production is pretty damn good, its definitely not bad but not insane

Last season he outscored Crosby 5 on 5.

This year, he outscored the likes of Seguin, Couture, Backstrom, Aho, and Zibanejad 5 on 5.

Granted, he's probably getting more ice time than a few of those guys, but he also plays on a shit team.

tbf aho had down year 5v5 this year, as did backy iirc. he did get a lot of ice time uyeah but yeah he didnt have top tier linemates. crosby had a down 17-18 5v5 btw

Ehh. Aho and Larkin are both too young to determine what's actually a down year and what's up. Backstrom's numbers are probably low due to sharing time with Scarface.

I will just say this, he was the best player on the ice in well over half the games this year. That is playing against some big time stars night in and night out and he stood out. Larkin has knocked his development out of the park, he is a very exciting player and really easy to root for especially with the local boy making good spin for Wings fans. I am happy to watch them slap the C on him and think he is a guy worth following and our first big foundational piece in the rebuild. People can put him up or down in whatever #1C debate they want to have. He needs to consolidate it again and keeping getting better, but he is a very impactful #1C that makes a difference night in and night out. That is and important thing to have, when he gets a little more help I think more people will see it nationally.

well he was 24th among Centers in points this year without much help or powerplay production and without crazy shooting percentage numbers or anything like that

i'd say 16-20 is pretty reasonable at the moment with the potential to move up to that 11-15 range in the near future

He's a much better possession player than Kuznetsov and has better xgf. Larkin was better defensively than Kuznetsov this season, but was pretty bad defensively himself last season and improved significantly this year, ironically once he was the top line center (Zetterberg had more 5v5 TOI than Larkin last season). Larkin's PDO was 98.54 this season, as opposed to Kuznetov's 104.37 (unsustainable).

Either way, they're both on the same "tier" of centers for me, and I'd put Couture, O'Reilly, Schiefele and Aho on that list too.

you just provided a ton of evidence that lark>kuzy then said they are the same tier

just admit it lark>kuzy

Larkin is a great player but ideally he is a 1b on a good team or just a 1c on a bad one.

It'll be interesting to see if Det can rebuild fast enough to utilize his prime or if they take to long and have to end up moving him.
