Looking at the italy-russia game a have feeling South Korea is going to get smoked by everybody next year, it will be a victory to keep any game within a 3 goal margin.

Well, based on how they played against Ukraine and Kazakhstan I can semi-safely say that this particular Korean squad could do relatively okay against the likes of Belarus, Latvia, and weaker teams than that. The question is only whether they'll be able to assemble the team that plays at the same level it did in Kiev. If not - they're ****ed, and we'll see double-digit scores a few times at least...

I don't think it's going to be worse than your average elevator team playing in the elite division, they did beat Kazakhstan convincingly, too. There's also the Olympic tournament which serves as a good preparation for the World Championship.

I would love to see it expand into a 20 team tournament. First we have 4 groups of 5 teams. Best 3 teams from group A/B and C/D join to play in the next round, while they carry over the results among these teams. After extra 3 games the best 4 teams from each group go to the play-offs. Teams placed 4 and 5 in the main group stage continue to play in a 8 team tournament that replaces the current structure of Division I Group A.

The good thing would be that all teams would still have 7 guaranteed games to play and all 4 main groups could be played in different countries, so more countries get a chance to enjoy their team playing at home every year. This should help the sport to grow in the popularity.

I would not. While everything you said sounds good and all, but the quality differential between the top 6 and top 17-20 is far too great for this system to work. I'm guessing there would be seeds of some sort, right? So #1 would play against #16 & #20 in the original group, leading to routs ridiculousness of which is hard to quantify... The two-round group format already existed earlier, before the current system. Honestly, there really isn't much reason to expand at the moment. It seems like teams #15-20 might have even-ish matches among each other, and can even sometimes steal a few points from #10-14, but they're utterly useless against the top 6. What's the point of increasing the number of teams that have no hope in reaching the Top 8? We have 10-11 teams fighting for 2-3 spots every year as it is... (10-11/2-3 is dependent on whether the US team is in fighting shape that particular year)

Could be a draw with seeded teams to make it more even.

That would be hilarious!

Group A: Russia, Canada, Czechia, Sweden.

Group B: South Korea, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Poland.
  .
With seeded teams. Those group a teams would be in pots 1 or 2 and group b teams maybe in last pot. To shake things more you could put non-European teams Canada, USA, Kazakhstan and Korea in the same pot.
