Some years ago we saw Japan in elite group. Also Ukraine, now in WC D1B, was there few years ago.

When we will see another new country in the top level? When i see the standings of last WC D1A, there is only South Korea, that never played in WCH.

In WC D1B is Great Britain. Do they have chance?

Edit: Great Britain was there in 93/94. But anyway..

I don't think we'll see a complete newbie in the next couple of years. However, I hope Poland gets promoted soon, I would love to see them in the top division again.

Oh I remember that 94 tournament. The British commentators on Eurosport were the most hilarious homers I've encountered thus far. "I think the Brits have been playing good hockey" was their view after the first period against Russia. Russia had a 6-1 lead. :D

How about Hungary? Second time in 70+ years.. :)
Hence we're not new to the top league anymore since 2009. And us being in the top in this year exculde us even more from the topic. :yo:
And you know what else? We want to stick in the elite. If we cannot do it this year, than I am sure that we won't have to wait another 7 years to get promoted again. But let's not jinx our chance so I shut up now. :)

beat France, beat Germany and you can celebrate :)

China in 15 years

If they decide, they might get closer. However there is also genetic and enviroment factor which us against them. No asian team reached that level. They had some youth national teams on camp in CZ. Czech coaches said they are still very far.

I was in Budapest around April 2010. After a day of sightseeing I went into some bar that was full with about half the patrons glued to a game between Hungary and Slovenia. (I think Slovenia won). Until then I don't think I'd ever heard of a Hungarian team and had no idea the sport even had a fanbase in Hungary. Or maybe I got lucky and found the one bar in Budapest that had hockey fans.:dunno:

They won gold in 1936 and have 1 gold, 2 silvers and 2 bronze which makes them better than Slovakia :naughty:

Lol yup. But that Gold team in 1936 were mostly Canadians playing for GB.

I hope Hungary stays up. I love their fans, it's fans like them that make international hockey special.

I was thinking about this on the weekend and the country that has the infrastructure in place to make a jump over the next couple of decades is...

Australia.

Wealthy country, with a stable national league and a tremendous love of sports, period. What they lack, obviously, is broad interest in hockey - enough to attract a good percentage of its top athletes and an integrated developmental program. But that's the problem with most lower Div 1 and Div 2 countries.

Come at me, bro.

Japan was only in WC due to the far east qualifier that granted one of China, Japan, or south Korea an automatic spot. They generally ran over China and Korea but struggled immensely at WC.

As already mentioned Korea was really close this year. They lost 2-1 to Italy but had they won that game they would be going next year.

Have always liked Italy. Won't they get promoted next year should there be the need of 2 nations being relegated? (Remember France and Germany can't be relegated this year as they are hosting next year)

When it's winter here, it's summer there & visa versa

Coriolis Effect is backasswards...which messes up those Savardian spinoramas

Their rinks are upside down...

A dingo ate that Baby...Translation: Total Non-starter!

Piffle and hogwash.

In 15 years, Australia is going to be a bubble team, bouncing between 1A and the elite pool at the senior level and will be dancing around the edges of the 1A/1B corridor in the U20 level.

Or not, I dunno. The rest of the known universe is focussed on footie but Australia manages to be a middling-to-good nation in a lot of different sports - rugby, cricket, basketball. They're an outlier in terms of smaller countries, able to put together decent squads across a whole spectrum. Why not ice hockey?

The fact that their domestic league has been stable (growing, even) means something, as far as I'm concerned. They're having young players come to North America to play at academies and then take the game back home. If they can coalesce some kind of development program at home, who knows? The sport certainly fits with the kind of rough sports that they excel at.

Come see me at the 2030 championships. We'll watch the HockeyRoos beat up on Latvia when Edgars Masalkis gives up a late goal on a funny deflection. Even at the age of 65, the guy plays great against Canada and gives up bad goals against everyone else...
