I am resigned to the fact that Brunette cannot and will not be fired this season or summer. Trotz is going "Patient Poile" his way through this because he believes in his choice of coach.

I'm not sold he believes in Brunette, I just don't think he's willing to fire his first head coach hire as a GM less than 2 years in.

I don't think he gets through next season without some kind of major change.

I don't see Trotz beating himself senseless. Pretending that everything is perfectly fine? Yeah. He's going to do that. Even if it stinks really, really bad. Keep walking. Keep whistling. It's all good.

I just can't imagine Trotz's pride at his coaching choice outlasting his frustration that this team is wasting year one of his Go For It plan. If he lets this year go in the shitter with Bruno, next year all these 30 somethings will be a year older and a year slower.

Going to seem silly if he pulls the trigger 2-4 weeks from now, the team stabilizes, and we miss out by 4-8 points because we stuck with an obviously losing formula. Going to seem sillier when we bring in a coach that actually uses the younger players, inexplicably, after the roster moves thus far

If a new coach is brought in, he can change the system. But some of this mess does fall on the players. So there are two moves there. Trade for someone or bring up younger guys. Trotz has already said recently that he favors bringing kids up and launching the total overhaul early.

Given all that, it seems like a new coach will almost certainly throw out Bruno's unproductive system and bring up and use younger guys.

The frustrating thing is Trotz following Bruno's lead on young players and throwing them away at this point. If he is contemplating a coaching move, then he should be contemplating a fresh pair of eyes and fresh evaluation of the kids, especially after giving them a sane chance. Since that isn't happening, I think we have to consider that Bruno is going to be given a lot of patience. And given the way that's gone, there will be few changes except that kids will be brought up and if they don't show instantaneous success, they'll be short shifted, benched, press boxed, and ultimately waived for the next kid. A system with no accountability for the coach and players that are the actual issue.

I honestly think this is the part that bothers me the most. I can't stand the coach speak. I know it's rampant in all sports, but just once I'd love to hear him get on the radio and say "X and O's are not working, this is what we need to improve on, this is what we are seeing is wrong".

Nashville GM Barry Trotz trusts coach Andrew Brunette amid Predators struggles​

With the Nashville Predators near the bottom of the NHL standings nearly two months into the season, it would be natural to assume coach Andrew Brunette is on the hot seat.

But not according to general manager Barry Trotz.

During his weekly appearance Wednesday on 102.5 The Game, Trotz emphasized his trust in Brunette to correct what's wrong with the Predators. Nashville is 7-12-3 and only one point ahead of last place Chicago in the Central Division.

"I believe that (Brunette) is a good young coach," Trotz said. "Just like a good young player, if you get rid of a coach to get a bump (in good play), is that the right thing? That's always a decision that the general manager has to make. Do you get a little sugar high for a little bit, or is this the coach going forward?"

Trotz then referenced the recent hire of Jim Montgomery by the St. Louis Blues. Montgomery was fired by the Boston Bruins last week, then scooped up by the Blues this week to be their coach.

"When (Blues general manager) Doug Armstrong hired Montgomery, he said this is my coach for a while. When I hired (Brunette), I said this is my coach for the next while," Trotz said.

Trotz hired Brunette in May 2023 after moving on from John Hynes. It was Trotz's first major decision as incoming general manager of the Predators after taking over for retiring general manager David Poile.

In his first year with the Predators, Brunette was a finalist for NHL's coach of the year award, leading Nashville to the playoffs for the first time in two seasons. This season, the Predators have had a disappointing start despite a franchise record $111 million spent in the offseason.

But Trotz is committed to keeping Brunette for the time being.

"Andrew Brunette is a good young coach. He's done lots of good things for us last year and in this league. And he's going to get better and better," Trotz said.

Trotz added he's given Brunette plenty of room to coach the team, despite his own experience behind the bench. Trotz coached 1,812 games in the NHL, and won a Stanley Cup with Washington in 2018, but he wants Brunette to have full control for now.

"If he wants to sit someone out because they are not playing, he's not going to have me going 'what are you doing?' We have those discussions about playing time. We have ratings, all those things. But there's a big difference from being up top and being on the bench. You should have a better feel on the bench. You know which guys are really going," Trotz said.
