Just wondering why Matthews has been floating to the outside, has probably taken more slapshots fom the blueline in 8 games than he did all of last year and has taken very few wristers from his sweet spot at the top of the circle? When he takes that wrist shot he rarely hits the net or it's an easy save. Just wondering?

To me it looks like he's just hunting for open ice and finding it high. If we can get some of the guys down low ripping shots on net instead of looking for Matthews it would help him get more chances from better spots. I guess he could be injured but his biggest issue from my eye test is he's not accepting passes clean like he usually does and having to reset which gives the defense and goalies that moment to adjust or sometimes he has to dish it off because the shooting lane has been completely closed down.
I'm not too worried about him, he'll get that sorted out.

If his wrist is going to become a periodic nagging issue, he needs to develop a 'plan B' game where he's more of a distributor or high end JVR clone in front of the net.

I’m not sure if it’s mental or physical, but something has been up with him. Hopefully it was just mental and the San Jose goal snapped him out of it. Playing him injured in October would be moronic.

Two things for me:

That line plays way too much on the high cycle and outside cycle. Not enough shoes and greasy plays.

Secondly, it just looks like Marner and team are feeding him. Need more shots from others.

They say he's going to be the highest paid player ever on his next deal

But if he keeps playing like this for the rest of the season.... how does he expect to get that kind of money? Right now he's sabotaging himself whether it's bad attitude or just bad luck - none of us know right now what's wrong so not fair to judge but it would help his case if they disclosed it if there's an actual problem. Might be within his control or out of his control... let the people know so everyone can give him space

Either way he had better get it together in a hurry or he's not going to get that next payday that he and everyone else is expecting

Now I don't know if the leafs just played bad or if the kings played good but do you guys think dubas is gonna blow it up soon? Should he? You guys are 4-5. What do u think?

Excuses? Hmmm. Not surprising that Leaf fans want more excuses. We seem to LOVE excuses.

First, you're assuming he is. He probably is, but don't assume.

Second, how the hell would anyone here know anything about what the Leafs will or will not announce?

Nothing to do with the Kings just playing good. Leafs are playing bad. All year. They aren't there.

What's wrong.

Mad at the coach?
Don't like each other?
Giving an FU to the select negative fans and media?
All injured?
Lazy?
Don't give a ?
Bad luck?

They aren't playing though. Every game it's obvious. You know effort when you see it. There is no effort. Just showing up for work and barely making it through the shift.

Totally clear. Even more clear when you watch game 2 tonight - Calgary and Edmonton. Some hard-working players and great chances there. A real hockey game. In contrast Leafs are ghosts so far this season.

So something is going on down there.

If it's just bad attitude and the kids are pissed off at something, they better find a way to grow up and get themselves going because all they're doing is hurting themselves individually when it comes time for some of their next deals

Either way... if our "superstar" players are capable of sulking like this and acting like spoiled kids, are these the types of players that will lead this team to a cup?

Did Lemieux, Gretzky, McDavid, Crosby etc. ever pull this sh*it? Cry when they don't like something? Or were they men and battled past it? Sure some of them may have whined but none of them ever quit.

Think about that.

I think he's madly in love, and it's constantly occupying his mind, which is affecting his game. If that's the case, I'm sure he will be at scoring elsewhere consistently.

I'm wondering when they are going to announce that Holl is a f***ing zombie who skates around aimlessly muttering 'puck' all game long

Kyle Dubas has already blown up their chances with his utter incompetent team building.

The question is what approach will the new guy take, assuming they hire a real GM with actual hockey credentials this time

Impossible with our coach who won't split up the top line. Marners game isn't plan B friendly for what you're suggesting unless you literally want Matthews to just be net presence which I don't think you meant. He can do much more than being a JVR clone while playing hurt.

Perhaps in a month's time when whatever it is forces him to be shut down in order to heal?

He's taking shots at the same rate as he did last season. He had 3 goals after 8 games last season.

Dubas needs to make some serious changes very soon, or he should be fired. He probably should've been fired after the Montreal series but giving him the benefit of the doubt with injuries etc. he was given a couple more chances. This is the last straw, this situation is exactly where we were with Babcock before he was fired, now we got a new coach, roster turnaround and guess what ? It's the same problem. Piss poor effort, no one shows up on time, lack of intensity and accountability and for some reason our coach is obsessed with Justin Holl who IMO is a top 5 worst defender in the entire league.

A very serious culture change is needed in the locker room. Whether it's the coaching staff or players, I'm leaning towards the players. I've had some time to digest what's gone on so far and as much as I love Willy, realistically he is the only core piece that we can and should move. He has immense value at 6.9M, he's a legit PPG top line winger. I don't wanna move him but we need a serious shakeup in the locker room. In a perfect world we move Tavares, but NMC makes that impossible, Matthews/Marner/Rielly aren't going anywhere, that only leaves Nylander on the table. I'd start making some calls looking for a legitimate top pairing defender, nothing less than that.
