When and why did they stop calling "tucking your jersey in" as a minor penalty?

One of the few good things the NHL did a few years ago was if the player tucked in their jersey it's a minor penalty. Doesn't seem like it's being called as a penalty anymore, bunch of guys on Buffalo in this Canucks game have it tucked in. When did this change happen and why?

More curious about why you think it was a good thing to call it a minor penalty?

Is this tied to safety somehow? Seriously question, I don't know. It just seems the NHL is always super concerned with optics, can't tuck your jersey, show up in certain outfits, no tolerance for pregame messaging etc. Then they make hilariously poor optical decisions, no pride support, no cancer support, your mask is too aboriginal, roulette player safety. All while being too lenient on sexual issues, racism, etc.

I feel like the NHL has bigger fish to fry than worrying about a jersey being slightly up on one side. It's not like a jersey tuck results in a dudes junk hanging out. Again, maybe this is some safety issue but I'd fail to see why that matters since real safety issues of concussions, stick work, visors, etc, they take about as seriously as a runny nose.

Sorry for the rant but I find it a meme how much the NHL polices the "professionalism" of players while also giving zero f***s about corrupt, unprofessional, garbage officiating and league office stooges that actively ruin the product. It's just a really weird double standard. If you want to go HAM on players, maybe take the same approach with your refs for starters.

It should be a penalty. It looks dumb when so many players are doing it.
They didn't call any penalties when it was implemented. Everyone obeyed the rules for a season or two and it went away. I'm pretty sure the refs and linseman had other things to worry about than a rule that was dumb to begin with...
I could be wrong but wasn't Ovechkin called for it?

Question: why is it a penalty?

Worse fan experience as it obstructs the player numbers.

If you are watching a random team that you don't normally watch, you'd wanna be able to follow the play reading the players numbers. In this Buffalo game for example both Johnson and Peterka had it tucked in, they have the same handedness as well so makes it difficult to follow the play when you can't read their numbers.

The definitely called it as a penalty when it was originally introduced. I remember Tobias Enstrom getting called for it.

Yeah it used to be a penalty and probably still is, but there's lots of stuff in the rule books they are extremely soft on, like corsschecking. Despite claiming they would Crack down.

I find it's usually way too fast in person for me to mentally tabulate all the lines but that's just me. I feel like most fans get a worse experience from watching penalties they served not get called on the other team because of score effects.

You're definitely entitled to your opinion, I just feel the NHL has bigger fish to fry when it comes to fan experience.

It should definitely be a penalty, preferably game misconduct rather than just a minor. Can't stand it that some players make it difficult to keep track of what's going on by obscuring their number. It hurts everyone, especially people newer to the sport. If you're going to put on a jersey, respect it enough by wearing it properly.

Refs are just waiting for the Canucks players to tuck their jerseys in the playoffs and start calling the penalties.

Better question when was it called so much for you to notice it? I think it was called a couple times and that was it. Also, why do you want a penalty for something so dumb?

What mental gymnastics did you have to put yourself through to come up with the notion that making it a penalty was "good"?

The new rule 9.5 is still on the books, it’s just not being enforced:

> 9.5 Protective Equipment - All protective equipment, except gloves, headgear and goalkeepers’ leg pads must be worn under the uniform. Should it be brought to the attention of the Referee that a player is wearing, for example, an elbow pad that is not covered by his jersey, he shall instruct the player to cover up the pad and a second violation by the same player would result in a minor penalty being assessed
