What's up with Max Comtois?

I know the Ducks have a lot of issues right now but he was previously considered a top prospect, even captaining Team Canada at the World Juniors. He's scored only 11 goals in his last 79 games played, and seems to be getting worse. Does he just need a change a scenery or is he just not that good?

Well he was a second round draft pick. Not like he was this super star coming into the league. If you look at his stats I’m sure it’s just about what you would expect a second round draft pick.

The Ducks are horrible and Eakins may be one of the worst head coaches of all time. Look at how much better Hampus Lindholm is after leaving and going to a good team. Hard to tell how good Comtois is in that environment.

Even Sam Steel is on track for his best season yet after leaving the Ducks.

And not even a high 2nd, he was 50th overall. Only one guy drafted after him (Batherson) has scored more in the NHL, and he's looking like roughly the 10th-15th best forward out of that draft, so a pretty good pick.

Perhaps OP is referring to his dropoff since his 22yo season (2021) where he seemed on track to become a solid 25g, 50p type player by now. Thing is, that season was oddly out of line with his career production to date. I'm sure Ducks fans can fill in the blanks as to what happened that season and since.

Probably role I would imagine. He’s playing 2 less minutes a game. With guys like Zegras, Terry and Mctavish coming up and taking top six minutes that would push someone like him down.

This board seriously inflated pkayervexpectstions without looking at where they were drsfted.

as a mid 2nd what he’s doing is what you expect.

That would be my guess as well. It appears that most of that 2 minute drop in ice time comes from being taken off the regular PP units.

The 5-0-5 stat line is quite telling, I don't know how you get 0 assists in 361 minutes of ice time unless you are playing with some pretty weak linemates.

Like to see Comtois under a different coach and system before Anaheim gives up on him.

Comtois has shown effort but it’s not getting him more production. Although Everyone’s production numbers are down for Anaheim . Not just him. It’s a coaching and executive issue when the entire team is struggling to score.

Eakins system is basically like Whack-a-hole. Hope to get a bounce go their way and a one and done in the opponents zone. They can’t win puck battles and they are out shot bad almost every game while giving up around 40 SOG on average. Comtois was playing his best when he was crashing the net and going to the dirty areas to try and win a puck battle. Hardly see him do that now.

he had a decent 20-21 season but it's been downhill for him since. playing on a terrible team + injuries isn't a recipe for success. still too early to give up on him though, considering the ducks are tanking

Dallas Eakins ruins players, how he still an NHL coach is beyond me
he's the perfect coach when you're tanking like the ducks are

He was absolute menace on the ice two years ago. Like a bigger Brayden Point. He did get hurt but man, what a fall from Grace.

I think most teams have a reasonable expectation that their 2nd round pick will produce more than 20 points per season, because if that was the standard expectation there'd be no point drafting beyond the thrid round since no one could be expected to even make the NHL with that kind of minimal production.

We tend to forget that most guys outside of the 1st round don't even make the NHL, or if they do, it's a short lived career. The average 50th overall pick in NHL history only plays in 135 career NHL games.

Also the World Juniors tends to make a name for some guys that never amount to anything in the NHL.

Captaining team Canada means nothing, even Chipchura was captain of that team. It doesn't mean you'll become an NHL superstar.

Comtois was projected as a 3rd/4th liner at the NHL level if he ever made it, so he has already reached his potential. Anything else is gravy on top. 2nd rounders rarely becoming anything more

That one time he scored 16 goals he was the lone bright spot on a putrid Ducks offense. He probably won't repeat that.

His lifelong friend and teammate Antoine Morand who was also a 2nd rounder for the Ducks can barely cut it in the AHL and is playing in Europe right now... the only reason Comtois is in the NHL at all is his physical skills
