This is a cool thing Whatifsports.com is doing a simulation of the tournament http://worldhockey.whatifsports.com/.

P.S My bad if this was posted

I read about this in a newspaper and checked it out. Any idea why teams only have half their roster and why Zhamnov is scoring goals and Khabibulin keeping guards of the net for Russia despite not going?

I don't know, could it be they started this project befor the final rosters came out :dunno: ?

Final

1 2 3 T
Italy 0 1 0 1
Canada 5 4 4 13

Goals: ITA - Michele Strazzabosco CAN - Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger (2), Jarome Iginla (2), Kris Draper (2), Brad Richards, Martin St-Louis, Todd Bertuzzi, Ryan Smyth (2), Vincent Lecavalier

W: Martin Brodeur (22 saves)
L: Jason Muzzatti (11 saves)

What a brutal beating!

And the thing is, Canada could really beat Italy 13-1 if they decide to show up and play their hearts out.

Ya Canada could do that if they come to play, but I don't think they will, put up a 13 spot that is.Also somehow I don't see this comeing true.

Slovakia 0 2 0 2
Latvia 2 3 2 7

Goals: SLO - Lubomir Visnovsky, Richard Zednik LAT - Aleksandrs Semjonovs (5), Mikelis Redlihs, Janis Sprukts

W: Arturs Irbe (29 saves)
L: Peter Budaj (8 saves

Fine, but is there any way Latvia beats Slovakia 7 to 1, come that's a joke

No, there's no way that Latvia beats Slovakia 7-1, which is a joke. But I wouldn't be very surprised if Canada beat Italy 13-1.

I was thinking more like 31-1.

It would be nice if these people could even spell. I stopped reading when I saw equasion. *** is an equasion? :shakehead

Bleh, Canada rarely blows anyone out in international competition.

We play up for our tougher competition and down for our weaker competition.

It's why we beat teams like France 2-0, lose to Norway 3-2 and tie Austria 2-2 at the World Championships.

Actually its a bit more complex;

For example Germany really gives Canada and the USA a run for their money, while they have no chance at all against Russia or Slovakia.

Just to Clarify: Canada could never beat Germany like 5:0 if (both teams play their best game). Russia could tear Germany appart 5:0 even if Germany plays sensationally well.

Its about the style of play and with so many North Americans in the DEL, the German Players can handle even the verry best canadiens and americans. With finesse teams, you can't "fight" back to compensate so they make you look silly and run circles around you, wich makes you mad and they score. :madfire:

I agree with you.

Am I the only one who isn't that impressed with Russia?

I personally think that they aren't very good.

- Kovalchuk is very good, but he doesn't strike me as a winner or a clutch player.
- Ovechkin is very good, but not unstoppable by any means.
- Malkin has never played against NHL-calibre players before.
- Kovalev and Yashin are so streaky and inconsistent that you can't really be sure of what you are even going to get from them.
- Datsyuk is strong, but he also is soft and he disappears in crunch time.
- Frolov is strong, but he is no better than 2nd-liners that other teams will be bringing to the table.
- Sushinsky and Kharitonov are great in the Russian League, but so is Pavel Rosa (and we saw what he was like when put against NHL competition).
- Afinogenov is very average in my opinion.

- And don't even get me started on their defense and goaltending.

I mean, of course Russia could still win a medal. It is a short tournament, and anything can happen. But I still don't see what all of the hype is about regarding Russia.

And to suggest that there is no way that Team U.S.A. can beat Russia is absurd.

I would go as far as to suggest that Team U.S.A. is right on par with Russia. Team U.S.A. has many more winners and much more experience on their team than Russia, and much more offensive-defensive balance than Russia. Team U.S.A. also has underrated team speed (Modano, Guerin, Rolston, Blake, Liles, Leopold, Rafalski, etc.) can all skate.

United States 0 0 1 1
Sweden 1 4 3 8
Goals: USA - Michael Knuble SWE - Fredrik Modin, Daniel Alfredsson, Markus Naslund, Daniel Sedin, Mika Hannula, Mikael Samuelsson (2), Henrik Sedin
W: Henrik Lundqvist (31 saves)
L: Rick Dipietro (18 saves)

Now that's am amazing result too, especially if you look at the goalie stats! :D

Its a darn good thing they have this simulation, thus saving us the tedium of actually having to watch the games :D

I thought he was pretty good at last year's world champs! Especially in the last 2 games, against Canada (full of NHL players) and Sweden (partly NHL).

No, because their defense can't handle the Russian's speed and skill, sorry

That is what was said in 2002 and 2004 too, and the U.S.A. took it to Russia both of those years when the tournament reached the elimination stage.

It is easy to say that the U.S.A. won't be able to handle Russia's speed and skill.

But it is equally easy to ponder whether or not Russia will be able to hande the physicality and grittiness of the U.S.A.

Because the last few tournaments, Russia has caved in whenever the U.S.A. has started to play physical and gritty. Conversely, the U.S.A. has more than handled Russia's speed and skill during these same tournaments.

Datsyuk is a beast. He's averaging about 60 shifts a game.

A beast who disappears when the going gets tough.

I am sure Red Wing fans can speak more on that, with regards to Datysuk's past playoff performances (or past playoff disappearing acts).

That's in the past, see the Russians have gotten better and younger, while the US Defense has gotten older, thats it

And the olympics aren't in North America this year...

However...anyone knows how they determine the results?

Pulling Numbers out of a hat, because their ridiculous, especially if you a look at all the box score. Pavel Datsuk(sp) is a very good, but he's not going to play 30+ min and 60+ shifts a game, come on.
