What we need is a true commissioner, If there is no season NHL give up the Cup

The lockout has become embarrassing and damaging to the game we all love. What we believe it needs is a true Commissioner not a rep for the owners, but one who will implement what is just for the game. We also think that if they are unable to provide us with a season, the Stanley cup should be awarded to another Canadian Amateur League Champion.

I guess I'm on the other side. I think they should fold the entire league, start a new one with a maximum salary of 1m only for the best players and go from there.
 
I hope the next commissioner can be a true guardian of the game and be a voice of reason between owners and players in the future.

The KHL would absolutely love that. Say goodbye to all your favorite players. The NHL had revenues above 3 billion dollars last year, with 30 teams in it.

Say the 30 teams have 25 players on each team, that equates to about 750 players. If the average salary in your fictional league is $ 500,000 then only $ 375,000,000 ($ 375 million) of that 3 billion dollars would go to the players. That's only 12 % of total revenue, the owners would receive 88 % of total revenue. Obviously that's not fair; if I'm paying to watch a hockey game, I want to pay the people actually providing me with entertainment: the players.

I'm not a huge supporter of the players or anything; they're just as much to blame as the owners.

Commissioner gets hired by the Board of Governors right? Meaning the owners? Meaning, they hire the guy that serves their agendas right?

Exactly. People seem to have this idea that Bettman is some rogue agent acting out.

He's got a job to do just like you, me, and every other working person.

Was about to say this. Essentially if that happened the nhl would be like the cfl, 2nd to the nfl.
 
ok give every player 1 mill that would work out to 24 % of the 3 billion. now to get the players to the 50/50 share the owners want i have a noble idea. CUT ALL TICKET PRICES IN HALF SO THE AVG FAN CAN AFFORD TO GO TO THE GAMES WITH THEIR KIDS AGAIN. it will never happen because there are enough corparationsthat will hand over the money for suites and season tickets.

"Give" every player one million and you will see the players choose to be "given" more in Europe.

The NHL will be an AHL league.
 
now we all know that will never happen cause that would be asking 750 players to only earn enough money that would make most of us jealous and when they are done playing they would have to get a real job like the rest of us stiffs that keep defending them. and we would be asking 30 owners to actually think of and care about the fans of the game and make them remember that is the reason the game has became so profitable. but lets be honest we are in a lockout because in all honesty all 780 people do not give a hoot about the fans. they will say they do and use us as ponds in there little game of chess but they have and will continue to only think of us when it will beneifit them
 
Sounds like the league which holds more American teams than Canadian teams has a socialist stance on the direction of the game. More revenue taken away from the players whom the fans come see play on a nightly basis distributed amongst the ownership? How is this fair?

Here lies the problem. There should be a rep for the Owners, similar to Fehr and Goodenow for the players. Goodenow used to refer to Bettman as the "Owners commissioner".

There should be an arbitrator type for the NHL who oversees the betterment and the decency of the league as a whole.

Not that I believe that will happen, but, I do believe Bettman will be done within the next season or two. I hope he sticks it out to hand out the cup to see how the fans react to him.
 
Who realy owns the Stanley Cup anyway? I believe it is "entrusted to the NHL but they do not technically own it.

Nothing screams socialism like removing the rights and pay of the workers for the benefit of company owners. :sarcasm:

What is fair and what is reasonable? Is it fair for the owners to take a bigger share?
Is it reasonable for players to demand the moon? :help:
 
Considering his moral ethics and his contract finishing up this season, Brian Burke would be a good commish candidate. He's worked in the league office before.

This is true. The NHL does not own the Stanley cup. During the last lockout a group took a case to court arguing just that the cup should be awarded to someone else if the NHL misses the season. They won their case (sort of) but not until the league had started back up making it to late to award the cup that year.
The Stanley Cup trustees are now allowed but not obligated to award the cup if there is no NHL season.

The problem with that is the trustees are former NHL executives who wont award anyone else the cup because altho they can they don't have to.

I wonder if the Stanley Cup trustees can refuse to award the Stanley Cup to the NHL champion as protest? That would be so beautiful.
 
Paul Beeston should be NHL commissioner imo. He'd be the best choice.

Enough of non hockey guys like Bettman and Fehr running the show. It's ridiculous.

Yes they can

the original bowl of "Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup", the authenticated "Presentation Cup", and the "Replica Cup" at the Hall of Fame. The NHL has maintained effective control over both the trophy itself and its associated trademarks. Nevertheless, the NHL does not actually own the trophy, but instead uses it by agreement with the two Trustees of the Cup.[2] The NHL has registered trademarks associated with the name and likeness of the Stanley Cup, although the league's right to outright own trademarks associated with a trophy it does not own has been disputed by some legal experts.[3]

The Stanley Cup was not awarded in 1919 because of a Spanish flu epidemic, and in 2005, as a consequence of the NHL lockout.

If they leave another blank spot on the cup i feel that it tells us they are unable to do their jobs and the cup should be awarded to the top amateur team in Canada.

the trophy is named for Lord Stanley of Preston, then-Governor General of Canada, who awarded it to Canada's top-ranking amateur ice hockey club, which the entire Stanley family supported, with the sons and daughters playing and promoting the game[1

thats why i said in the show we should take the cup back
