According to the article, he's PPG (23 pts in 22 games) in AHL. That's probably enough to get a tryout next season somewhere in the NHL, right?

You would think. Would be cool if the Sharks gave him a tryout. God knows we need the secondary scoring. Although his lack of seed doesn't really help our already slow team.

He's been putting up good points in the AHL ever since he's been there, and had several tryouts in the NHL and still been sent back.

He's a career AHLer now, he can't keep up in the modern NHL.

He is one of those guys that can score given an opportunity but at the NHL level he doesnt get those opportunities and would be a liability. Probably make a good PP specialist but thats not enough

Unfortunately I dont think we will ever see him in the NHL again. He had a tryout a few years back with Dallas and it didnt work out. The Sharks havent even looked at him even for the 4th line/PP specialist.

Double sports hernias with fark you up!

Glad he got his 15 mins, but sad that he never learned proper technique leading to those injuries.

The problem is your article doesn't actually address what happened to Cheechoo.

He had double hernia surgery in the offseason a year after his 56 goal campaign and it took an already slow player and made him too slow to compete in the NHL. He still has all the skill and talent he used to have, he just cannot get from place to place on the ice, and being a small player he cannot compensate and make space for himself with his size either.

He likely will never play in the NHL again because at this point age wise he's not going to get faster, and that's his problem.

Following that kind of performance is difficult no matter the player and Cheechoo naturally dipped in production the next season. Still, his 37 goals and 69 points were nothing to scoff at. His play had finally rewarded him with a new contract: 5 years/$15M .

Minor nit.

He signed his 5 yr/$15M deal in Feb 2006 as a contract extension during the '05-'06 season (his 56 goal Richard year) - not after '06-'07.

Signed goaltender Evgeni Nabokov to a four-year contract extension and right wing Jonathan Cheechoo to a five-year contract extension.

I watch Cheechoo in the AHL playoffs when they faced Grand rapids. Cheech was a force on the ice for barons in game 6 and 7. He faced the Andersson and Nyqvist line if i remember correctly. Forced turn overs and back checked very well. Its fair to say that sign Cheechoo to a 2-way contract cheap is a low risk move. And i rather have him instead of havlat that cost 5mil/y and invest the money in something useful. :)
