I'm looking to upgrade the 20 year old projection tv and would love to hear from my fellow rangers fans on what kind of tv they have. I'm torn between the oleds and the full array LCDs...I worry the oled will dim all the time making it annoying or it'll have major burn in...

Thoughts?

the smaller the screen the sharper the image. I believe they broadcast games in 1080P or 1080i. Not sure if upscaling to 4K or 8K will really make it better. 120 hz or higher is a must for sports.

Also usually if it has less than 4 HDMIs it is a budget class TV.

Also depends on how you're watching the game. I have a 2018-model Samsung LED that is capable of 120 Hz, but it's useless, because MSG (and all cable channels) to my knowledge only broadcast in 1080i and 60 Hz anyway (someone please correct me if I'm wrong about that). I believe streaming services like ESPN+ offer 4K and 120 Hz.

With my Samsung, the picture quality for sports in general has been deeply disappointing. I can never get the colours to look natural -- HDR mode is better than most of the other options, but everything still looks so bright it's like someone painted the picture with lipstick. I have taken to leaving the TV on Movie mode, which sacrifices the 120 Hz capability anyway. If I hadn't gotten the TV as a refurb, I'd be furious. Considering what I paid though, overall I'm fine with it. The other problem is that the HDMI ARC simply will not communicate with my Marantz receiver, but that's a pretty specific gripe for me.

Finally, my boss has an LG OLED, and it's spectacular for watching films, but I can't tell you anything about watching sports on it, unfortunately. Burn-in isn't much of a worry, I've been told. It's POSSIBLE, but it's not like an old computre monitor or plasma screen. Regarding dimming, try to get a TV that allows you to turn off the spot-dimming (or whatever it is called. My Samsung won't let me turn it off entirely, another gripe, but I don't really notice it, to be honest).

Programming will always trail manufacturers' technologies. We're up to 8K capability but watch 1080i/p programming. Live sports, broadcast TV, streaming services. I don't believe any of them have a 4K option. Only disc media like Blu-ray have any semblance of keeping up with manufacturers' technologies.

I still watch my hockey on a 52-inch Sony Bravia XBR LCD circa 2010ish, and I don't find myself wanting. When I'm on the go, I watch hockey on my Sony Watchman portable TV. And don't even get me started on all the sound formats and confusion around Dolby and DTS.

EDIT: Looks like Netflix, Prime Video, and a few others have 4K streaming but it's gonna hit your bandwidth hard.

My 55” LG OLED is absolutely f***ed f***ed f***ed with burns. Irreparable burns. One of the most frustrating investments in my life.

I am actually having a new TV delivered. My old TV (bought in 2009, 42 inch) broke a week ago.

My new TV is 75 inch so quite an upgrade. Mostly using it for gaming and streaming games in the middle of the night. I don't really watch conventional TV

I have an 80" Vizio 4K UHD in the basement, but my teenager basically owns that for video games. When the PS5 arrives, and the basement remodel is done (couple months), the PS4 will go to his room and I plan on spending more time down there.

In our family room it's a 55" Vizio. I don't know what's in the master or guest rooms. I think one is a Sony and the other is a Toshiba. IDK about size, somewhere around 40". They're on the old side. My son teenager has some random no-name brand. We'll get him something new for Chistmas.

I watch most games on my phone. LOL. I plan on watching more once the basement remodel is complete, which is a big, expensive, 12+ week process. that will start next month and be done around spring.

I watch on my 24" computer monitor because I usually have the game on my secondary while I'm doing work or stuff on the primary.

Personally, I don't care what size the screen is because I can follow all the same. Besides, there's something to be said for smaller screens, because then when they inevitably pan to Milbury or Pierre, they aren't close to life-size ;)

Maybe @Amazing Kreiderman and @nyr2k2 want to rethink their choices after that notion.

4k TVs seem to be great investments for video gaming and watching 4k movie/TV content, either from UHD DVDs or 4k streaming services, but it's ridiculous that networks are so far behind.

I don't really understand what the holdup is.

I mean, they say they broadcast in 1080i, but I simply don't believe they are recording in 1080i. I was watching an ESPN broadcast of a college football game on my mid-tier Samsung 4k TV.... and it wasn't some backwater school, it was like Florida State I think. And there was no way it was even 720p, it was being recorded at like 480-something, it was terrible. Every player was blurry as hell.

When are these companies going to upgrade their cameras??

it is possible you did not change your cable box settings, it might be by default set to 480p.

What, other than watching hockey, do you plan to use the TV for? Is it in a room with a lot if ambient light? What size? Budget?

Unless you really try, burn in should not be an issue on OLED, unless leaving a paused image or PC desktop onscreen for hours.

If you can have a dedicated theater room that's dark and have the money, I say go option three: 4k projector with a +120 in screen and surround sound.

It’s interesting. I have a decent tv and a new iPad but I still tend to watch games on my iPhone. It’s just easier and I don’t feel I have to invest a ton of time. Can just pop in and out when appropriate.

My MacBook.

I haven’t touched a television in years.
The reality is that my wife is absolutely obsessed with TV. We counted a few months ago, and she had upwards of 20 shows set to record on the DVR. And she watches Netflix literally nonstop when she's not watching her other shows. She doesn't even pay attention; yesterday she put on some French rom-com series and after 20 minutes I was like, "You know this is in French right?" And she's like, shit, let me turn on the dub.

If not for her we'd have the most basic package that still allowed me to get sports packages. Or nothing at all and I'd watch in the computer/phone and just get Netflix and Disney + for the kids.

I'm not actually a fan of television. Just live sports. And I'm buying the PS5 just out of tradition. Last game I played was DOOM and that was at least a couple years ago.

My wife and I go upstairs with the 5yo by 8pm. So I generally watch games on my phone in bed. Sometimes I go back downstairs after the little one is in bed, but then five minutes later we're down 4-1 and I'm like, f*** it. It is more convenient in that sense, for sure. I'll then track the live box score and tune back in a little later to see his things are going.

I have one of those curves Samsung LEDs from 2014. Loved that it had Sports Mode, which would drown out the commentary and emphasize the arena sounds. I like that. The TV is on its last legs, though, and I’m looking into a Sony Bravia as a replacement.

I literally only use my TV to watch hockey or play ps4, don't watch a single show. So I mostly use my 5K iMac, my TV is a crappy old 1080p Sony. Going to buy a 4K HDR TV when I get a PS5. Don't know which yet, I hear good things about LG?
