Caps 2C/1C center Bäckström is injured, that leaves 1 top 6 spot available
either C or winger position, Strome has sometimes played as LW as well,
but last season was Hawks 1C, had a pace of 26 goals and 33 assists,
so about 60 point pace. (scored 22 goals and 50 points last season)

What kind of role C Dylan Strome will get from Capitals early season?

I would guess either 2C or 2LW, Kuznetzov is 1C.

Strome is just a placeholder at 2C until McMichael takes the job from him but that's likely not this year

He creates chances but he has no finish. He just rifles every shot wide of the net or stick handles straight into the goalie pads.

Last season the Capitals dealt with significant injuries and McMichael still was not able to break into the top lines. If his advanced stats looked great it's likely because he was playing sheltered minutes.

This year that same opportunity is there and now he's got a full season under his belt. If he can't break out at age 22 with over 100 games played at the NHL level...

22 is still very young, some players only break out by the time they’re 25 once their bodies have fully matured.

Strome isn’t a bad player, he’ll have a hard time pushing him down the lineup. His skill set is also not suited for a bottom 6 role, you need centers that are responsible defensively like Eller and Dowd.

The advanced stats that I was referring to were individual scoring chances and high danger scoring chances created, in which he finished 2nd and 1st. Not per 60 either. Pretty impressive for a guy regularly playing with guys like Sprong, Sheary and Eller on 10 minutes a night.

advanced stats make me chuckle sometimes.

McMichael did have a good stretch when he was able to play center last season, his natural position. I'm not so sure how much time he'll get at center though, lots of competition.

If the Caps are smart it'll be a 50/50 split at centre with Eller. Put Eller in for more of a shutdown role.

Uh, 2nd and 1st relative to what?

total team? more than guys like ovi/kuzy

Ok yeah that's completely absurd then. No chance that remotely resembles reality.

I watched almost every game.

Ovechkin had 50 goals and 90 points. McMichael had 9 goals and 18 points. If you think the 18 point player produced more chances than the 90 point player, then wow I don't know what to tell you.

I had another poster tell me advanced stats showed Ovechkin was better in 2016 than he was in 2009. -which again, nobody and I mean NOBODY who actually watched the games would possibly concur with that conclusion.

Don't take it so aggressively lol. Obviously there's a lot of factors to that stat and I just found it interesting.

I can dig that. I’d like to see Eller tried at 4LW. It sounds like a demotion but that’s a beastly 4th line of Eller-Dowd-Hathaway
