What is the most the leafs should spent on rentals?

nobody can answer that unless they knew the target.
Lets say the Oil went nuts and offered McD for Matthews and a 1st ...well, then I'd say bye to Matthews and the 1st.
but if the Leafs were offered Chiarot for a 1st, i'd so no thank you.

Just get some extra 5-6 D for injuries and stuff in the playoffs. Most teams use 8-10 different D over the course of 4 rounds (obv planning on 4 rounds)

So probably only need 2nd or 3rd picks

1st round pick or top prospect not named Knies or Niemela.

For a non-rental I'd pretty much trade anything if we can get a legit top 6 with term or a top 3D with term while dumping off Holl and/or Kerfoot to make the salaries work

I hope the leafs do some cap circumvention like other teams. Vegas doing it in such an obvious way should allow Leafs to do something similar. I’d be disappointed if they didn’t take advantage of the loophole. Maybe put Muzzin LTIR?

Seeing the Toffoli trade today makes me think even more that a 1st is alot to give up for a rental.

Yeah, lets just continue what this team has done WRONG for years. As good as they are, they're not Stanley Cup contenders.........YET!

If the Leafs drafted another Sandin/Liljegren in the 2022 draft then they would probably be only ready to support a 30/31 year old Matthews in a cup run.

Use the first to acquire a good player with term to support a 24/25/26 year old Matthews to win a cup.

There wouldn’t be an asset that I wouldn’t trade if it upgraded our team. I don’t really want to see good assets out for rental’s but if it makes us away better then so be it.

I'd include either if the player coming back was here for 2 runs. Obviously, I'd hate to lose either, but I believe we have a very good team and an impact player (one we could accommodate under the cap) would go a long way towards cementing my belief that the Leafs could go all the way.

They are 32-12-3 it's all in time, I don't want to spend the 1st rounder on Ben Chiarot but you can't make the 1st rounder untouchable just because Nick Foligno didn't work out and that's what it is for people, Foligno didn't work so don't trade this 1st rounder.

That's not how this works, this is the deepest roster they have had in 20 years, which includes last year, you have to go for it.

2nd and B prospects. I am not happy about bringing out more 1sts or cream of the crop prospects for a team who's biggest challenge is overcoming themselves. The Leafs look great this year, but they've been great for years and still collapsed.

I've been hearing this every year since we kept JVR as our "own rental", how's it worked out so far?

This. If we can trade for someone who will help us for some years to come, that's one thing but pissing away assets for rentals when we're in position to be underdogs to win even one round isn't what they call "good asset management".

Hehe, I remember being a fan of keeping JVR as an own rental. Pretty sure we argued about it back then, I remember claiming it was essential for building "winning culture".

I wanted guys like him and Bozak gone, basically because they were non core parts. I remember hoping (because NSH had a scoring need) that maybe we could work a JVR sign and trade for Ellis. Still wish that could have happened.

It depends on the return. Sometimes trades work out, sometimes they don't though.

I'd be happy with a guy like Braun, or even Hagg from Buffalo. Up front........ I don't see why they'd move Kerfoot when he's been one of their best players in the playoffs, and even this year he has been fantastic.

They are going to have to move out some kind of salary, and I'd hate to get a D man, but move out a Holl and/or Dermott, then they are an injury away from being back to square 1.

Ideally, they'd make a move to acquire a solid dman, and include Ritchie (for his cap hit) in that deal. Yet, it would be nice to have a Ritchie style player in the lineup to compliment/rotate Simmonds with. You need your Blake Coleman/Barclay Goodrow types for a long run. Yet the 3rd line seems to be very good this year. Plus, they do have Clifford who has been on some long playoff runs, but not sure how effective he can be or what their plan is for him.
