Unfortunately, with the frozen cap this team can't afford to get good enough. We are a full Hedman away from contending and there's nothing that we can realistically do about it.

I'm okay with 1st + guarding knies/amirov/Robert by selling teams on Abruzzese ascension this year. 1st + one of those 3 doesn't seem worth it for the rental names out there. Core 3 guys are still young we'd have a dynasty on our hands if all 3 of those picks hit as top 6 players to join them

given the cap space, recent playoff performances I would not be comfortable giving out top prospects/1st round picks.

This core has to show they can get it done in the playoffs by winning a round or two before we start throwing 1st rounders again for rentals.

I think Ritchie will be back as a 4th liner come playoff time as a rental.

His $# is hard to squeeze in at the moment.

Nothing. This team is going no where. They will be out in the first round.

Need to draft that 1st round pick and start stock piling prospects for the rebuild.

Who was the last "high priced" TDL rental that pushed his new team to at least a conference final?

A top 4 dman costs a 1st minimum. If we want a term dman like muzzin then it costs more

I’d say we could use a good natural goal scorer on line 2. Thinking a 20-25 goal guy year in year out. That would also cost a 1st

We only have 1 first and I’d prioritize that top 4 dman but a 2nd LW would push kerf down to the third line and our depth would be insane then.

the dman is a must however because then we could do either
Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Rental

or

Rielly - Rental
Muzzin - Brodie

The first pairing I’d run if I’m confident muzzin will bounce back. The second i would do if muzzin has regressed completely and needs a stabilizer like Brodie more than Rielly.

either way a top 4 dman to push holl outside the top 4 is almost necessary

so I guess my answer is I’d be willing to spend a 1st, but I’d be much more cautious of the trade compared to the last year disaster that was Foligno

Then trade Marner Matthews and nylander if you wanna spice things up also deal guys like brodie Campbell and if you can get him to waive his NMC Tavares.

you’ll get 8-10 1st round picks of value and can scorch earth it.

We are in the Edmonton position, every year that doesn’t make significant tangible evidence, no bs like winning in 6 to lose in 5 second round. We need a deep run, dare I say conference final run for any progress to be deemed solid.

Dubas is a good drafter too, he is usually able to find promising players in later rounds, so there’s a bit of an advantage there

You can’t half ass this shit, either go in fully and make smart tactical trades to improve the team; or you should sell and see what you can recoup. Our window of contention is every year for say the next 3-4 years minimum, we gotta take a shot everytime

The idea of spending first round picks on rentals is so f***ing dumb. When was the last time this worked for us? You go the entire season building chemistry with your team only to go and f*** that up by plugging some new guy into the squad? Usually giving up a 1st or a 2nd in the process?

Looking at Pittsburgh and Washington's d-corps in their cup runs, it certainly is possible to do it without a Hedman.

Reilly fills in for Letang and Carlson.
Muzzin for Orlov.

Leafs have been pretty damn good come playoffs except for Game 7's/5.

If the forwards played with a little more desperation and could get a little more puck luck I think the D is fine.

They need Bunting to be more productive than Hyman was and to create that true Shutdown line with Kamph at C.

I'd peg the blueline as being top priority but would also be open to adding a forward if possible. I wouldn't be keen on trading away a 1st or its equivalent in prospect for a rental. Anything less than that probably has to be fair game.
Ya may want to add tending as a weak spot as well.

Move anything and everything. . Time is now. You have 3 elite forwards - #16, # 88 and # 34, an elite D- #44, an emerging elite D - # 38. Supporting cast is solid in Kerfoot, JT, Kampf, Bunting, Brodie Kase, Mikeyev,Spez.
I do not really think they need a top 6 LW. Yes it would be nice. But maybe focus on a good solid 3/4 D, prefer righty, and , maybe address the emerging leakage problem in net.
I really do not see an issue with this forward group. Maybe a LW banger with a bit of O upside,

Of course if we had Fleury Murray playoff goaltending anything is possible.

Butch Goring for the NYI? :wg:

In the 1980 season, Goring was traded in March to the New York Islanders in exchange for Billy Harris and Dave Lewis, and was widely regarded as being the "final piece of the puzzle". That season, he scored 19 points in 21 playoff games to help the Islanders to the first of four consecutive Stanley Cups.

Can't call him a rental. He played four full seasons with the Isles.

There is the same core in place that rolled over and played dead that last two years in the playoffs. They have played well this season and look good, but I would not rent anyone for them. Maybe make a hockey trade that will pay off next year as well, but I would tell them to take the next step, dig deep and win something.

I don't care that they lost first round so many times, I base this off they way they looked losing. Win or lose if they show some fight this year, I'd support renting them something next year. If they play dead again this year, I'd rather have the assets in the bank to retool in the summer, than waste on losers.

amen. we can't waste these prime years and this is the best team we've had in decades.

and to add to what you said.. late 1st round picks are overrated imo. if we can get a legit top 4 denfenceman or legit top 6 winger, I'm all for it.. preferably on a decent contract and at a prime age.

No top prospects or 1sts, just a 2nd at best and a B prospect. We can’t afford to give up potential ELC talent right now with our cap situation and the depth guys like Knies, Robertson, Niemala, Amirov, etc will add will be crucial to future runs.

I really dont think we are winning the Cup this year. I don't see us beating Florida, Carolina or Colorado in a best of 7. So I wouldnt spend anything this year.
