Curious what others are feeling going into the playoffs. Should the leafs try to make a splash to make it past the 1st round.? Should they stay put and see if they can make it through the 1st round without spending premium assets or any assets at all?

Also what position would you be targeting with a rental?

I voted 3rd round picks and thinking a physical bottom pairing guy who can PK wouldn't be a bad addition.

I'd peg the blueline as being top priority but would also be open to adding a forward if possible. I wouldn't be keen on trading away a 1st or its equivalent in prospect for a rental. Anything less than that probably has to be fair game.

Neither our top 4 prospects or our first rounder should be available for a rental. Either the core will have figured it out in the playoffs or they will not. If they do they can win the cup as is. The team needs to keep cheap ELC talent anyways.

the problem is it's not like rentals are necessarily cheaper than getting somebody under contract. they routinely cost 1st round picks etc.

and we can't count on scoring big at the free agent dumpster every season. Dubas did well this past offseason, but terribly the one before. it's not a sustainable strategy for a contender. so cheap players have to come from within at some stage here to fill those spots on entry deals.

I'd really think about shipping out substantial futures for a rental until this core group shows it can produce some playoff success.

if we're getting a guy who will be here multiple years, that's different. you're getting a lot more value in that case.

You should include an option for "current players on roster plus".

Management is going to be up against the cap regardless, so, if they can shed some salary and replace with a rental, with the hope of replacing a player with cheaper options in the offseason (such as Dubas and co. found in Bunting and Kase); that would be an ideal option to pursue.

We have players who have value in this league and can fill another teams need in return for rentals that can fill the Leafs needs. Who to move, what to replace with? That's a huge "it depends".

My typing is too fast and posts often too lengthy to indulge in details of the various scenarios, ultimately, Leafs have to fill in any gapss, move on from players they can easily replace, with any rental who can improve a playoff-type lineup. Even if this means losing the deal long term for a roll of the dice (within reason obviously).

Such a scenario occurred with Foligno last year. If not for injuries, we beat the Habs and probably the Jets. A confident team on a roll can do anything during a playoff run.

Even if we go out first round again I seriously doubt will break apart the too four. I also doubt dubas will lose his job

so marner matthews. ?
Tavares nylander ?

i think the two ?? Will be filled by Robertson and knies

niemla is also untouchable because he checks all the boxes we lack. Puck moving dman with high hockey IQ and shoots right.

Assets to use for trade
our first this year
Our first next year
Our 2nd next year
amirov
And any other prospects as needed
Holl kerfoot dermott
Lilligren

This year
We need a top 6 LW who can put the puck in the net
We need s bottom 6 guy who can pusback when needed and play defensively
We need 2 dmen who can ckear the net
Stop a cycle
Block shots and provide pushback when needed

pavelski top 6’
Scott laughton botton six

oleksiak
Chariot

Bunting matthews marner
Pavelski Tavares nylander
Kase laughton mikayey
Spezza kampf ritchie simmonds engval

Reilly brodie
Muzzin oleksiak
Sandin chariot
Whoever is left of lilly or dermott
And a couple of marlies if. Needed

Sandin is probably the only untouchable of futures/prospects/young players. And maybe Knies (I don't think he's technically a tier above Robertson or Amirov yet, but i lm VERY high on him as a prospect).

Everything else is on the table for the right asset, especially futures.

I saw a post on Mississauga Steelheads social media hyping up their 3x 6’5” 205-230 pound defense group and realized that OHL team has more size than the Toronto Maple Leafs. Now the tale of the tape doesn’t tell the whole story but if we can’t make a big move I would still prefer that we back fill some of the lower depth positions on the blueline with some size. Maybe we just need some options to mix and match depending on game style that isn’t Muzzin and Holl. Guys like Schenn, Ryan Graves, just guys you can have help stop some momentum and physicality out there.

Added current players on roster

After giving up a 1st round pick, a 3rd, two 4ths, a 5th, and a 6th for Foligno/Hutton/Rittich/Nash last year, I would be pretty happy to avoid the rental route. They also traded Barabanov away, who is frankly more valuable than all the rentals they brought in
This is my thought process too. But evidently judging by the results of the poll so far, others think different and want to spend big again.

Personally find it very interesting that the majority on here want to make a big splash on rentals again.

3rd rounder, unless there is a really good deal to be had where the 2022 2nd makes sense. However, if we are giving up the 2022 2nd, I would want some other benefit out of it (i.e. we get 2 rentals, or we get a noticeable guy).

1st round pick is off the table for any kind of rental. Don't even care if it is Hertl or Forsberg.

Really, I would only consider rentals for the 4th line, and I wouldn't spend that much on getting a 4th line rental.

I'd only trade a 1st for FF09 as a rental. Maybe Giroux.

Don't think there's any guy I'd spend a 2nd or 3rd on outside of those two though. I'd also tell anyone asking for Niemela, Knies, Robby, or Amirov to pound salt for a rental.

Obviously the first choice.
A top 4 defenseman is a must and it's looking like a top line winger is a need as well.
Curious why you think the leafs should spend big on rentals again? Is it that some of the rentals this year are really good players you normally don't see as rentals?

Depends on the target. If you're gifted with an opportunity that's long term and quality, it's tough to set a limit listed above. I think our floor has to be examined as well. Giving up the least amount possible while gaining our greatest needs.

And the more I think about it the more I think one of our best targets should be Marc Andre Fleury. If the worry is a first round exit and we still have legitimate questions about goaltending, is there a player in position more "guaranteed" to address that question and who is likely to be available, than MAF? He may also be a solution to our tandem's "problem" and Chicago's goaltending (near) future while not having to unload picks, in this instance.

His cap is $7M, but obviously he's owed less. And with the prospect of being able to retain either of our keepers I think the ask of retention isn't an unreasonable one.

Granted, we may be one of the teams on his 10 team no-trade list. But if we aren't, there are worse places to start.

Unless it's Hertl or Giroux, it really shouldn't be more than a 2nd and a B prospect for a rental and that's already a lot.

I'm not opposed to trading high picks or prospects; I'm just opposed to trading 1st rounders + for 3rd line offensive black holes like Foligno. That trade was an obvious disaster, even if he had stayed healthy. If you're giving up high-end assets, you should be getting top-of-the-lineup talent back; and ideally someone with term, or that you might be able to resign.

I think we're lacking only 1 maybe 2 spots on the entire roster. One being a top-6LW (love Kerf, but he'd make our bottom-6 stronger) and a depth defenseman because I don't think I'd want Rubins as our 8th come playoff time.

There are two rental top-6 W on the market (FF09 & Giroux) that would give us a measurable upgrade in the top-6. No other F would interest me enough to waste a top-90 pick on because I don't see the upgrade or fit. To be fair I also wanted Hall last year and despised the Foligno trade.

As for the defensive need, I'd be willing to throw a late round pick at a guy that's solely there to fill in in case an injury happens. Just don't see the need for one of the defenseman that are rumored to be highly sought after at the deadline.
