What is the GOAT storyline in wrestling?

I don't want to use a poll here because I feel the "other" option would be best. This thread is obviously built on the idea that Ciampa/Gargano has been discussed lately as the GOAT. I'm going to post a few that get the recognition but I want your opinion and/or rank them top 3. Just some to start with:

- Summer of Punk: The ending was brutally ruined but this was a summer reign of a guy who was disgruntled and it played out in front of all of us with one of the greatest promos of all time. That being said - only lasted a summer and the payoff was AWFUL.

- Austin/Vince: The anti-hero vs. the boss we'd all love to beat up. Can't deny that this storyline was solid but it was one dimensional in the sense that it was a one way street between the anti-hero vs. the power hungry boss. There really wasn't too much depth and the turn at WM17 didn't work albeit very fun.

- Mega Powers implode: Now THIS is a well built story over time between egos, a well built story behind Elizabeth, and just some incredible foreshadowing. I think this storyline has more depth than the previous mentioned.

- Ciampa/Gargano: For my money... this is the GOAT. From a tag team to a betrayal. From a betrayal to a face trying to get redemption. From a face trying to get redemption to becoming the villain and slowly deteriorating to the person he never wanted to be. The call backs, matches, slow build, even the f***ing wrestling attire was built into the story. It's pure perfection.

- Golden Lovers: Does this count or is there too big of a gap? If it counts then I think it's an underrated possible candidate for GOAT.

Honorable mention - HBK vs. Taker at WM25 to HBK needing redemption and ending his career at WM26. Light vs. Dark. It was only for one run but the ring attire, the gimmicks, the matches.... Really deserve a nice tip of the cap even though the longevity of it didn't really stay as consistent as the others. But that 1 year period was a beautiful story of a man obsessed with breaking the streak that he lost everything. One mistake made in the WM25 match ended it for HBK and his obsession ended his career. Annnnnnnnnnnd then Crown Jewel.

i mean i would go chose a mexican one where the sons are fighting for their dads in 30 year old feuds.
but Ciampa vs Gargano is abosultely the best thing ive ever seen develop in forever.

not much else to say. i liked all the ones listed but if you exclude what happened this week/ that would be my favorite one.

Orton/Triple H from Rumble to Mania 25 was f***ing lit. And then Triple H won at Mania and killed the whole thing including Orton's momentum.

You had to have been there as it was happening to truly experience just how white hot Orton was when he punted Vince for the first time. The amount of Orton/Austin comparisons were off the charts. It was also really pivotal because it was when WWE finally made Steph and Triple H being married canon.

I still maintain that WWE botched the story and it should've been Orton/Cena with Cena being the McMahon savior because at the time Cena was also incredible hot and that would've actually cemented their feud as a GOAT feud like they wanted but they missed the boat and by the time they did it later that year no one cared and it was forced.

It doesn’t help that after that entire build up, Orton and HHH wrestled a straight up singles match at Wrestlemania and dropped the ball on shifting the title to Randy.

Foley and Orton had a great feud during Orton's legend killer gimmick.

It featured my favourite promo of all time, Foley's "spit in my face" promo that ended with him beating down Evolution. Think Orton ended up going over in the end, though, as he often does.

There was no reason for Orton not to go over.

Honestly, I think the best thing to do in the coming months or weeks (depending when it ends) of this Gargano - Ciampa storyline is to completely block out what they do on Raw/SDlive and pretend it never happens and just follow what NXT says and does.

That match at Backlash in 04 was absolute fire.

I was there. Unreal.

Maybe not GOAT level, but Trish versus stalker fan Mickie James building up to Wrestlemania 22 was probably the best women's storyline ever. I guess the only thing that backfired was the Chicago crowd completely Roman Reigning Trish and popping for Mickie's win.

I've really been enjoying Gargano/Ciampa its told such an incredible story, its had basically everything!

Really makes me look forward to what HHH could do with the main roster in a few years when he hopefully takes over. Imagine getting NXT quality both story wise and in the ring with the main roster filled with a lot of underused talent

Good luck trying to do that with five hours of programming minimum on a slow week.

NXT benefits from an hour weekly show and "PPV's" only quarterly.

Austin/Vince
Hogan/Macho Man
Sting/NWO
Von Erichs/Freebirds
Raven/Dreamer

These are pretty much the correct answers, especially the first two. Austin/McMahon is like a sprawling epic with all sorts of random but entertaining chapters, while Mega Powers exploding is pretty much a flawless but concise story. I'm not that high on Von Erichs vs Freebirds, but I can't deny how hot the crowds were for it.

The Bret/Owen brother feud was great storytelling that any other brother vs brother story will be judged against in wrestling. USA turning on Bret Hart was also an excellently executed storyline, even down to the twist ending. Japan was mentioned in the OP and while overt storylines aren't typically a strength in Japanese wrestling, the Tsuruta/Misawa story was a great example of building a mega face and it laid the foundation for a great decade for AJPW. Worth mentioning the Japanese invasion angles (AJPW and NJPW) that inspired the NWO angle too.

It's tough because some of my examples and some examples are feuds that don't have depth. Another one i'd throw out there is Punk vs. Hardy. Perfect combo of their real life playing out live.

But once again.. not too deep in layers. I'd say a fantastic storyline but the depths of Gargano/Ciampa trump literally anything i can think of. The Gargano character being told over the course of DIY to today is a masterpiece. An utter masterpiece.

Hart / Michaels how has this not been mentioned yet?

Jericho / Owens has not been listed yet and deserves some credit. I will admit that I really like both wrestlers so I may be a bit biased.

Owens/Jericho was your typical contemplative partners that became best friends that just happened to have the betrayal take part during one of the all time GOAT segments in WWE. It’s a very basic feud with pedestrian matches otherwise and is generally super forgettable.
