What is a bad goal (from a goalie's POV)?

What goal attempt situations should a goalie always/mostly save in?

I know in football/soccer what a goalie should always deal with but am less clear in hockey.

Can someone enlighten me pls? :)

Well as a goalie I'd say any shot that isn't from a high scoring area that is free of traffic, shots from behind the net, give aways from the goalie... but the again there are situations in which these won't be. Any low percentage/weak shot that the goalie can clearly see and doesn't change direction should normally be stopped. It's really hard to tell as sometimes the shooter just gets the best of you from a weird angle.

Bad goals to me, are the ones that bounce in off me and in from odd angles (eg last night, someone shot one level with the goal line... bounced off my rear and in because I wasn't quite as stacked against the post as I should have been).

Also pretty much any clear shot from higher than the faceoff circles should be stoppable.

Other than that, it's more situational... like on a one on one did you bite hard/make the first move to a deke. And personally I hate getting five holed on those scenarios, especially if I was still trying to wait out the shooter.

Really though, I think most goalies take any goal personally. Regardless of the situation. Feel like there's always probably something you could have done to stop it (though some are easier to shrug off than others, especially if you're willing to give the shooter credit for a good shot).

Any goal from a bad angle, goes 5 hole, or underneath the arms is pretty much always considered a bad goal by a goalie.

I hate getting beat under the arms I think more than the 5 hole. At least 5 hole you know the shooter was aiming for (and either you were too slow to react, or read the shot wrong). Anything that goes under the armpit is pretty much just a hole you created at the wrong time because you were trying to block a different area of the net.

Pretty much anytime I got beat "through" my body instead of around it. Also, I always know every goal that goes in against me is ultimately my fault, but I especially feel like it's a bad goal if there's nobody else to blame but me. If everyone else did their job and I dropped the ball then it feels like a bad goal. Also the timing of the goal really matters - even if it's a great shot where I could have had more help from my team then I really feel it if it lets down the team.

So yeah, basically any goal where I feel like I'm letting the team down.

My last 2 goals on the weekend caused the goalies to be rather pissed. one was a breakaway 5 hole snapshot, quick release just beat him. The other was a wrap around, and he was not happy at all.

Anything that they can see or isn't tipped most goalies consider bad.

I am not a goalie but I consider a bad goal a shot that is outside of "the house" with the following caveats:
1. Not a one timer
2.The goalie must see it come off the stick and into the goal
3. The puck must not change direction
4. Not a rebound goal but the first shot

Of the 5 goals I scored in 2 games on Sunday, I'd say 2 of them were bad goals.
The first one, I'm in the high slot uncontested and I take a wrist shot under his arm. Bad goal.
The second one, I'm on the rush near the top of the right circle and I snap one top right with a screen. Good goal.
The third one, on the power play, I walk in the high slot and shoot high glove. Good goal.
The fourth one, the Dman backs up at the blue line and gives me enough space to shoot low glove. Good goal.
The fifth one, I get a loose ball right in the slot. The goalie jumps at me tries to poke check the ball away. I dodge his poke check and put the ball in an empty cage. Bad goal.

Mind you, this was ball hockey, so long shots might be harder to track given the fact that the ball curves a little bit.

The fifth one is a situational example. If it's a loose puck in a high danger area... A goalie has two options. Play aggressive and try to get it out of the danger zone. Play passive and hope they can block whatever shot ends up coming their way.

If you play aggressive and lose, it looks like a bad goal... But really it's probably the option with the better chance than just waiting for the shot to come your way. Of course if it goes in on the second scenario, at least no one blames you

The best answer so far is any shot a goalie sees come off the stick and into the net.

A bad goal for me is any shot I think I could have saved. If I read a play correctly and move into position and am just a bit too slow, that is a bad goal, for me. So in essence, it is completely subjective depending on the play. I've had goals on me where my defensemen will say it wasn't a bad goal that I think was because I know that I could have had it and had goals where my defense hang their heads where I don't think it was a bad goal because I didn't see the release or there was a weird bounce, etc.

For me, I get frustrated if a goal goes in because of something I did, not something I didn't do. If that makes sense. Like if my stick control is bad and a puck goes under it, or I bite too soon on a deke, or my hands are too wide and one goes in under my arm.

If someone handcuffs me with an amazing move on a breakaway, or gets off a quick shot where I don't see the release, or it's the 3rd rebound and my D isn't helping, those I don't feel bad about.

I hate letting in any goals, but on some you just gotta give the shooter credit.

Most goalies will tell you that they don't like letting in any goals - myself included, especially when you have a solid chance of making a save. 5 hole goals have always bugged me personally, maybe because it's the area I'm aware I'm weak on and strive to improve upon every chance I get. I think most goalies are their own worst critic, feeling they could have done something different on most goals against.

I'd consider a weak goal any of the following:

1. 5 hole.
2. Unscreened shots from anywhere.
3. Leaky trash through the 6/7 holes.
4. Goals that are a result of poor rebound control or mistakes from the goaltender. I.E poor reads.
5. Behind the net/wrap arounds on most occassions.
6. Bad angle shots.

I'd say for me is one where I over think the shot or I just kind of go through the motions thinking "oh this is a joke right?". Some shots have eyes but when you get over **** or panic, that's when I think it's truly a bad goal. I can live with one bouncing off me and in every one in awhile or the ones where I may be out of position by an 1" or so but those ones, I hate with a passion.
