not to rain on anyone's parade but in order to prove a champion you really can't play 1 singular hockey game and declare a champion...realistically if there was a best of 7 series between the 1980 USA team and the 1980 Soviet team I really don't think the USA would win the series...it would a 4-1 series win for the Soviets, just saying

"not to rain on anyone's parade ", I think that's exactly what you're wanting to do.

You’re missing the point. Much of the allure, and what makes 1980 so special, is that the US/Soviet matchup wasnt a 7 game series. It was a single game where anything magical could happen.

One game; if we played them ten times, they might win nine. But not this game, not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight we stay with them, and we shut them down because we can. Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world. - Herb Brooks

The US gold was absolutely legitimate.

So you're saying that you think that the 1980 Soviet team was better than the 1980 American team? Very bold.

A tournament can quite easily declare a team a champion in a one game final (not that that was exactly the case in 1980). A champion is a person or team who wins a tournament, but people conflate "champion" with "best" too often. USSR was almost certainly the best team in the tournament, but USA walked out as the champion. That's why the games are played.

If that were the case, there could be a good argument that Canada would have won pretty well every best-on-best tournament in recent decades.

They would have had to play best of 7 against the Finns and Swedes as well then ... because the final was a round robin, not a single game. The yanquis still had to beat Finland (which they did). And because they were the only undefeated team at the end of the final four (2-0-1 record), they were the champions.

So there has never been an American football champion? World Cup Soccer? March Madness? Such a stupid way to think about things,
who said anything about football or soccer ? those are completely different sports ...we are talking about the sport of ice hockey

all I am saying if.... WHAT IF the 1980 Olympics was a best of seven between the USA and the Soviets...who would win ?
that is the question...not the logistics of well it did not occur...well if it did who would win?

That's why they call it a miracle. Of course the Soviets were stronger. But not that day. And a best of seven doesn't decide which team is better either. As if a seven game series was never won by the underdog.
