Fun fact USA has never won the world championship. Thats how serious they take it.

Oh I know. I don't take the WC very seriously, and I know that most countries don't. USA definitely takes it the least serious.

That's only 2 less than the number of Olympics they've won. Do they not take that seriously?

This type of tournament lacks competitive balance because the Europeans are at a huge disadvantage, most especially the Russians, who suffer from the "hate" factor. The fans hate the Russians in every game, which in turn infects the Canadian and American officials, whether they go in vowing to be professional or not.

Russia suffers from the hate factor? As opposed to how Canadian teams are universally loved and admired when they play overseas? I've gotta hand it to you, at least it's a new excuse.

Actually USA won WHC twice.

So they take it as seriously as they take the Olympics?

I find the correlation between wins and seriousness flawed. Canada's never done anything at the WBC or the Olympics, but we take baseball pretty seriously.

USA uses WHC as a development tournament, everyone knows that.

If you expect Russia to medal, you should lower your expectations. Russia has enough firepower offensively to pull off upsets in elimination games. Russia will be a top 3 hockey nation if they manage to fix their defense in the future but by that time, the current Russian superstars will be declining. Ovi and Geno will be 35 years old by the time Russia has a legit defense, and Datsyuk/Kovalchuk will be retired.

To say that Russian hockey program failed because they lost one single elimination game is very interesting, to say the least.

I am sure that USA take very serious the last 3 or 4 WC. They playing with much energy with good attidude.

In the recent WC the US-Team are very serious ;)!

I don't doubt that the players who go to the tournament are serious. They get a ridiculous amount of refusals though.

It is canada cup and that tournament always had relevance.

Whc is extremely crappy. Sweden had their C team last whc and barely any nhler. Piss poor attendence also. It is like watching sprengler cup over nhl playoffs.

Speak for yourself. I don't care about who wins in the NHL. I don't care much about Canada Cup=NHL Cup with NHL rules, refs and bias.

I do care about the World Champonshup held by the only eligible international organization to regulate international hockey. If Canada doesn't send their best players to the tournament it's not my problem, it's Canada's.

Russia is a top 4 country and they will stay that way even if they don't win a single game in this tournament.

Canada
USA, Sweden, Russia

Finland, Czech
Slovakia etc

In my opinion, being a top class country is less about a few games and more about current talent produced. Finland for example is a top level team, but they don't have the talent - trending up as they are, there are ways to go to catch the 2-4. Russia has the talent, they have not been able to get it together as a national team for awhile. All it takes a single 'click', and there they are.

Its not that easy. It even took them quite long to win gold in WHC. Sure Russia is the top country and this will stay as it is. Any other conclusion would be absurd. But saying that is just about talent is quite misleading imo. You need that cherry/gold on top to prove you are the best. And Russia desperately needs it.

Tournament still bad though. It is not like in the 80s when it had meaning.

It's not a question of those 23 players who are chosen to the World Championships, whether they take the tournament seriously or not. Of course they do and want to win. The question is how the USA Hockey, as a whole body, takes the tournament seriously. Every year there is plenty of quality players available for the US to make a team that could be even comparable to Team Canada on paper, but if we called that particular team as "A" team, what USA usually sends into the World Championships is a "C" or "D" team. That's just pretty ridiculous. They are always an underdog, and winning any medal is a success. If they had their "A" team (of who they could have from those 14 teams eliminated from the playoffs), they would be constand gold-medal co-favorite.
