What happens with Mikyehev when he comes back?

Do the Leafs have enough cap space when he comes back or do they have to move someone?

If they have the space, just rotate him into and out of the lineup with a few others, like we see on defense.

After he does a conditioning stint with the Marlies, of course.

Or they could just treat him like they did Corrado and leave him a permanent scratch. Hope not.

There's the rub -- they actually CANNOT.

13f (Matthews, Tavares, Marner, Nylander, Kerfoot, Mik, Kampf, Kase, Engvall, Bunting, Simmonds & Spezzza) is $54.75m
7d (Muzzin, Rielly, Brodie, Holl, Dermott, Sandin, Liljegren) is $20.882m
2g (Campell, Mrazek) is $5.45m

Take the total, plus Kessel's $1.2m, and it puts them at $82.28m.

The problem CAN be solved if they send one of Sandin/Liljegren down until somebody goes on LTIR, but that may not be the most prudent thing to do considering it would mean running with 6D.

Ultimately, Mik will get his chance, probably on the 3rd line with Kampf & Kase. He wanted an opportunity elsewhere in the offseason, and I think the Leafs do genuinely believe he can be the offensive catalyst that Engvall can't be; and Ritchie hasn't been.

Once Mik is back, unfortunately one of Sandin or Liljegren is going down just because they are waiver exempt. Maybe we move Dermott or Engvall, but I think they send one of those guys down so they avoid losing an asset for free.

There is about 0.1 % chance Kerfoot gets traded
Kerfoot is playing well now and his trade value is high .. and he did have an excellent playoffs last year so it would be an unconventional move to free up space to get a VET dman for playoffs .. like I said it depends on Mik .. otherwise Mik gets traded

Zero percent chance Kerfoot gets moved anytime soon, nor should he.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Kerfoot - Tavares - Nylander
Mikheyev - Kampf - Kase
Ritchie - Spezza - Simmonds

Engvall is the odd man out IMO once Mikheyev returns.

ideally speaking, Dubas accommodates his trade request. as he is not skilled enough for any but his logical defensive role on this team. a speedy checking winger to pair with Kampf. since he professes to be unhappy with that role, I'm not seeing a workable solution in Toronto.

I'd think we would have to go on a bit of a skid before anybody gets moved so i don't expect Mikheyev back anytime soon.

It doesn't work like that. Once he's recovered from injury, he's back on the roster for Cap purposes. There is an exception, and I half expect that the Leafs will do this. They can put him on a LTIR conditioning loan to the Marlies. It's a maximum of six days/3 games, but they can request an extension of two more games (and are usually granted that).

I think the roster shaping already has been massaged many times by the front office.

I hope they get ahead of the curve and trade from a position of strength wih our depth instead of losing it on waivers.
Always giving assets instead of receiving will eventually end poorly.

there are ways, just like there was robidas...

Maple Leafs Plan Conditioning Stint for Mrazek

Ilya Mikheyev has also remained on LTIR since he broke his thumb in training camp. On Oct. 11, the team announced that the forward would be out of the lineup for a minimum of eight weeks. Dec. 6 marks the beginning of the ninth week, but it's unclear when the Russian will be ready.
Mikheyev joined his teammates before practice for the first time since he sustained the injury. He's been working with skills and conditioning before that time.
"I think that's going to continue to progress as he gains strength in that hand," Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said.

Plan is to bring Mikheyev on the teams road trip out west on December 14th.

So yeah the answer seems crystal clear.

Ditch Ritchie, Mikheyev to 3rd line, Engvall to the 4th line. (Or tbh maybe Engvall on the 3rd and Mikky on the 4th).

And with Clifford around that even gives us cheaper muscle depth than Ritchie.

Does Dubas take the plunge? Even if it's just waiving Ritchie to the minors?

Doubt it very very much wouldn't be against it but I doubt it

why are people so eager to let Engval go when you have Ritchie on the team still? Engval at least has a purpose on the team, Ritchie is a useless pilon.

Ritchie is going to be difficult to move. That's the problem to me. He was gifted a top 6 role with elite players and wasn't doing anything with it. He's looked much better with Spezza and Simmonds but other teams know that too and aren't lining up for a 4th liner with that cap hit.

Trade Ritchie for someone with a lesser cap. Something like Ritchie for Derek Grant (or Nick Cousins) would allow us to have a 22 man roster, keeping everyone on the roster.

Ritchie has been playing well for the last 10-15 games or so. Puck not going in for him, but he's been generating chances for himself and his teammates for quite some time.
