Soup will be replaced by the next Bunting.
Cobra is pacing for 31 goals over an 82-game season.

Many were cautioning in the "trade 88?" thread and asking where were we ever going to find a guy who could replace his offense for 6.9? Mikheyev may be that player.

Speed: Cobra > 88
Drive: Cobra > 88
Physicality: Cobra > 88
Shot: Cobra < 88
Creativity: Cobra < 88
Passing: Cobra < 88
PP: Cobra < 88
PK: Cobra > 88

CAP: Cobra > 88

If I look at the above and then look at the cap hit, it's pretty clear Mikheyev should be extended and we all know it won't be for 6.9, or more.

Ilya Mikheyev is inclining as an NHL player. Where is his upside capped?

Would rather have him for all facets a player can bring to the table than a guy at 6.9 who has a very questionable motor?

Guessing many will say Cobra has done it for just a portion of a season and that is true, but he's not a guy easily replaced.

Will he get a Hyman deal on the market? If he does, then you have to let him go, if you aren't going to make big cuts elsewhere.

Not a Nylander dig post, just a juxtaposition to show Mikheyev, IMO, is incredibly undervalued by the fans in the market he plays in.

Mikyehv is a keeper. There are some guys that we just have to keep and Mik is one of them unless he prices himself out. I hope with all that Dubas has done for him and his increased role with the team will want to make him stay.

They should try to re-sign him.

The rest comes down to his ask.

But a lot of this will also depend on how the team does in the playoffs. If they go on a deep run then Dubas will be far more inclined to pay a little extra to keep him around. Otherwise, there will be changes and Mikheyev is likely one of them.

Trade
Kerfoot
Holl
Mrazek

Sign
Mik 3yrs @ 3 mil
Engvall RFA 2 yrs @ 2 lmil
Luyub 2 yrs @ 2 mil

I imagine they will give him some of Kerfoots money
I think Kerfoot's money will go to solve the goalie issue. If Campbell is good enough to be the #1 next season they will need to give him a $2M raise and if they replace him the new guy will likely cost more than that. They will need to give new deals to Engvall, Bush, Lilly, Sandin and Gio and the only thing coming off is Kessels $1.2M retention.

In a perfect world they could keep Mikheyev but unless Muzzin goes to Robidas Island they don't look to have the money. Plus they have a bunch of cheap guys in their system ready to grab a forward spot and that has to be the smart play. I would assume Mik is looking for at least a 3 year deal so that overlaps with AM and Willie's next deals.

Next years cap is $82.5 and if Jack took Kerf's money and they deal Holl I think they have around $9.0M, assuming Spezza, the new Kase, and Blackwell are at league minimum. Check my math but that $9M has to give four players new deals plus sign Giordano, so all the money is spent and Mik has to be replaced at league minimum salary. There is no relief in sight without trading one of the big 3 as Buntings next deal will eat up any cap bump in 23-24.

I just don't see how they can make it work.
