so every year, at some point in june 2 teams meet in the stanley cup finals 1 teams wins and 1 team loses anse that is how it works and the winning team gets to carry around the Stanley cup.

But they also get hats that call them the Stanley cup champions and they get these hats the moment they win the cup.

what I am wondering is what happens to the hats that were made for the team that does not win the cup?

in 2006 for example Carolina beat Edmonton for the Cup, they got their hats that said that they had won the Stanley cup, However there must have been Oilers hats made that proclaimed them the 2006 cup champions

what happened to the Oilers hats?

Boil them into a big pot to cook up an imminent successful decade of hockey.

Most of this stuff gets shipped off to developing nations in Africa and Asia where it is sold or given away there to people who don't understand and/or don't care about the significance.

They're distributed to countries in need, the other NA leagues do this as well.

They usually just get donated somewhere that needs them where hockey doesn't have a presence.

When I went to Russia I saw a kid wearing a hat that had "Bruins Hockby" on it

Are leagues still doing this? MLB decided to destroy Indians championship merchandise.

I only ask because I remember years ago, World Vision flat out said that these countries don't need clothing. They need economic assistance, food, housing, medicine alot more. I thought maybe the leagues changed the way they deal with the merchandise.

Would wear proudly

There's a country out there where the Buffalo Bills are the most dominant dynasty in history with 4 consecutive super bowls

for years the hates, shirts and other stuff were sent over to developing countries as day to day clothing--about 10 years ago the tax laws were changed and the tax deduction companies got was taken away--now most of the stuff gets destroyed as the tax laws for that remains intact

There are approximately 50 kids somewhere in the world who will grow up, live an entire life and die believing that the San Jose Sharks were Stanley Cup champions. I'm sure that that has to make fans in San Jose feel better.

I don't understand why that's a reason to not help out where you can, especially with merchandise that's already made.

They could even sell the merchandise (that wouldn't have been sold anyways) and donate the money to aide areas of need, but no, they'll just destroy it, demonstrating the financial wealth in the developed world.

I don't buy the "historical inaccuracy" excuse.

Because it ruins their economy and puts their local shops and local workers out of business. They don't need material goods, they need a functioning economy, a stable political system, less corruption, as well as specialized goods they may not be capable of producing, like medicine.

so does this mean when the leafs make the cup final but don't win, they still techinically won because the merchandise says so? its not much but i will take it!

why do they even make this gear?

The hats are all made neutral and then overnight they sew the team patches on. That's why they're always black, gray, or white. Shirts are also made in neutral colors and then screen printed with the right decal.

Only if there's a game 7 will there be a batch of hats and shirts with the loser, so they can be given away to the team that night.
