A good player in Florida, sucked in Detroit. Now a free agent who doesn't even play. Whatever happened to him? Injuries? Personal problems?

Imagine him on a great team instead of Florida. Would be a 1st line center.

Injuries+Babcock

He did join the list of vets that Babcock pretty much tossed to the side. Weird that he didn't get a shot on another team as Weiss still produced at a good clip for the Wings last year.

Considering what Babcock is doing with a bunch of bargain bin vets in Toronto, I'm inclined to think he knew what he was doing.

He was never worth the money, hard to live up to such a big contract. Shocked Holland even gave him that.

Supposedly Holland didn't really want him, it was Babcock who pushed hard to sign him. Anyway to me he was always a bit overrated, playing in a tiny market and getting all the opportunity in the world to produce masked some of his issues and kinda skewed his value. He hasn't aged well and along with some injuries he just lost the meager amount of NHL ability he had left.

Didn't say Babcock didn't know what he was doing. But there are vets that Babcock gets and goes nope don't want him. Legwand was in the middle of the best season of his career and he came to Detroit and Babcock used him as a 4th line winger.

Injuries took a toll on him and never really gave him a chance to lock down a lineup spot on the Wings. He looked pretty good last season all things considered. I'm sure he could still play, but he declined the PTO offers he got so maybe he's not all that interested in actually continuing his career.

Injuries + Detroit Utilization. There were several threads that show'd Weiss's play was favorable to the team but his line assignments and ice time weren't in line with what you would expect if someone was doing decent. This was also a time when Dan Cleary was still a roster player. Thank goodness Babcock is gone. At the end of the day he wasn't someone you would want as a long term top 6 solution.

However why you buy out Weiss and then go and sign someone like Richards is a complete head scratch. I would rather have just ate the remainder of Weiss's contract even if he was in the AHL. Now Weiss is eating up cap for 6 more seasons. Richards + Weiss buyout is just about as much money as just playing Weiss and are essentially the same NHL player at this point. Then you have Weiss completely off the books sooner.

Holland gonna Holland

I understand the OP's question but, as is the case with many of these 'where is/what happened to player x threads' you've ignored the fact that Weiss put together a very respectable career - more than 700 games played and nearly .6ppg over the course of those games, and that was notably with some very lacking Panthers squads. Those numbers are nothing to scoff at.

Some players have a shelf life and once they are north of 30 they simply aren't physically capable of performing the way they used to. Weiss suffered some injuries later in his career and probably decided it was best to hang them up..

This deserves to be quoted. Not every player has the idyllic career arc that features a gradual decline before a pleasant retirement at 37-38. In fact, most players don't. Some players just fall off seemingly overnight. Not everyone ages the same way.

There was one specific concussion that Weiss got where he was about 1/2 the player he used to be when he came back. I want to say this was right around the time Toews wrapped his car around a telephone pole, but it may have been 1 year prior.

Injuries really limited his effectiveness but I'm still surprised he never got a chance this year as he was actually pretty good for us last year.

he had countless try out offers, according to reports, He declined them all, and is waiting for a Contract.

hes content collecting his money and waiting for an injury on a contender, and the subsequent ringing.

He was always a stretch as a 1st line center (even in Florida, he only had about one season as a decent 1st line center). High draft pick with Stevie Y comparisons, but years of injuries followed by increased salary pushed him out of the mix.

He was effective when he got to play last year. Not to the point where he was worth the contract he had, but it's a bit surprising he's not playing anywhere.

He's washed up and finished. Has looked terrible since the lockout season, which he went out injured less than halfway into the season and everyone thought it was the injury. He somewhat bounced back last season, compared to his first year with Detroit.

Not only does he play a lot older than he is, he looks like he's 45 years old in the face and is only 32.

Old thread, but as I prep for my draft I came across his stats...he basically hit 30 and died. He was a solid second line center...for 6 years! He hit the lottery with his Detroit contract, but what happened to this guy? He didn't even play last year?? Where is he?
