In the GDT someone brought this up, and I realized I don't remember or perhaps I never knew. What happened to Bykov? I seem to remember Russia doing really well or at least playing very well under him?

Vancouver happened

Technically, he was fired after placing 4th in WC in Slovakia in 2011 but he was under scrutiny ever since 3-7, his resignation was only a matter of time. It's a damn shame because he brought together Russian hockey players and dragged Russian NT out of mediocrity. Quite a lot of people were happy after he was fired but it all went downhill from there. But Quebec City 2008 is a nice memory.

If you mean what he is doing now, he retired after coaching SKA St Petersburg to Gagarin cup

It's been many years since he was last coach of the Russian men's national team.

The 2010 Olympics and 2011 World Championship weren't so good, and Russia has other coaches.

I wonder why Jukka Jalonen is not the coach of Finland's World Cup team. I've been impressed with him at every international level he has coached at. He last coached Team Finland at the 2016 World Junior Championship, winning gold.

Thanks for the responses. I appreciate them.

I was mostly interested in the circumstances that lead to him leave the NT. I was also mistaken in thinking that Russia had been playing pretty well when he was coaching. I guess people would not have been happy with him being fired if that was the case. Setting that straight is a nice bonus for me :)

Bykov was good and Russia played the most team-oriented team hockey they ever played. Then after 2 golds and a silver, Russia placed 4th and he was fired.
