The title of this thread sounds like a joke waiting for the punchline.

Q: What does Kyle Dubas do with less than 7 million?

A: Simple. Trade more depth to pay a forward 11 million.

I'm assuming the money we will have by FA will be this

Assumptions to this are
We lose mik
Clifford 4th line
Burry Wayne
Abruzzece 13th FW

Right now we have 15 plus 2 goalies assuming we bury Simmonds. That gives us 7.4 mil

Bunting-matty-mitch
Kerfoot-JT-willy
Cliff-kampf

Nick A

The 5 D plus holl

Mrazek
Kallgren

We sign sandin for the lily deal get rid of Holl that's 8 mil of space with still 15

Sign Pierre for a mill

7 with 16

Kase for a million 6 with 17 skaters.

We'd still have to most likely sign one D and 2 FW

If we do it at 800k that's a full roster with 3.8 left

Basically we go with
Bunting-AM-Mitch
Kerfoot-JT-willy
Engvall-kampf-kase
Clifford-league-min
Nick A

Muzz-lily
Brodie-rielly
Gio sandin
Fill in St league min

Mrazek
Kallgren

With 3.8 left

Our flexibility this year If we go with that lineup is we if we can off load kerfoot and mrazek we can afford 2 5.5 mil aav players.

( My math could always be off obviously)

I would rather he play for the Leafs right now. Nobody will ever remember him winning an NCAA championship. It will be a byline in his resume.

Ya that’s what poster KB was saying as well.
Hockey hall of fame would. Adding world junior championships, world championships, Olympic medals and even NCAA championships all go a long way in the criteria of being a hall of famer.

Things like winning a championship like that are important to a lot of people. You only get so many opportunities to do so. Most kids never even get to play for their country let alone get a chance to win a medal. Usually they only get one try.

I'd love to see him on the Leafs this year too but I respect the kids decision. Let him get another year of development and become a winner. Then hit the ground running as a 20-21 yr old.

Robertson plays like a slower Trevor Moore but has a secret shot he struggles to get open to take.
He looked like he was always to aggressive and goal hungry that he was always skating himself into poor position. The last half of this year on the Marlies, he looked like he had learned to slow down and create space for himself. He was scoring like crazy.

Next step is to learn to do it at the NHL level. Hopefully he can be much more sturdy as well.

You would. But on the other hand it is important to him. He wants the championship.
I guess I just don’t understand the importance of a collage championship when your NHL career awaits you. That said I hope he is worth it

Oh I get that. Maybe it's because he came so close and wanted to finish the job. I'd rather have him signed and pushing for a spot at this point, but good on the kid for realizing that championships are hard to come by.

I suspect he'll sign once his NCAA season is over and will probably go right into the lineup.
Fair enough

Milk and Campbell walks, and they'll trade Holl and likely shift Simmonds/Clifford into being 13/14tg forwards. I also expect Mzarek gone one way or the other.

Then put the lions share of open capspace into goaltending. Add a physical #6/7 D and then fill out the bottom six forward with Bunting/Kase bargain signing + RFAS.

What’s up with the Knies guy. We keep hearing he is this great power forward prospect but he has no interest in playing for the Leafs? What’s with that?

He's still going through development. Most 2nd round picks don't come close to being NHL starters even as their D+2 comes around. Even if he signed hed be with the Marlies. Need to be smart with development -not a race

There's a chance he'll be ready near the seasons end.

The avs also have a disgusting defense and still gave away a lot to get Kuemper

Can you guess which team won the cup?

Kuemper
  • 2021-Jul-28 Traded from Arizona Coyotes to Colorado Avalanche for Conor Timmins (#32), round 1 pick in the 2022 (#32) draft and conditional round 3 pick in the 2024 draft
Nick Foligno
  • 2021-Apr-11 Traded from Columbus Blue Jackets to San Jose Sharks for round 1 pick (#25) in the 2021 draft (Corson Ceulemans) and round 4 pick in the 2022 draft
  • 2021-Apr-11 Traded from San Jose Sharks to Toronto Maple Leafs for round 4 pick in the 2021 draft (Ethan Cardwell)

Why $7 million? The summer just started. Lot's of time for moves.

I see the 'voice of reason' has abandoned that ruse.....

Included in the allocated money are players that aren't key, or even anything to worry about if claimed off waivers.

Leafs don't really have an issue, at least they aren't in a situation where they have to move a 2nd. liner for a prospect and middle round first (one in the hand for 2 in the bush/ it could be a boat).

Avs won with Kuemper. No longer need to build from the net out. Soup should do.
Not if the aav is pushing up on $6m like dreger was reporting today on his OD hit.
If that’s what soups camp is asking for then I get why dubas and co. Have basically halted any negotiations and have pivoted their energy to finding alternatives and allowing jack to circle back if he doesn’t get what he’s looking for in the open market.

Yeah I like Soup at 4+x4 max. Gladly take Husso if Soup passes.

You might be right but it seems super weird to me if these are in fact the circumstances.

You would think his future employer has the final say, and not many tears would be wept for the poor kid that has to go play in the nhl.

Ideally you want your prospects to be hungry and not thinking about how much fun that last year in college would be.

Strap on a helmet and start shooting.

You also can't force the kid to sign his ELC either. If he decides he wants to continue his education and take one more shot at a championship, there isn't much you can do about it.

I would say he is hungry though. Some kids are entitled and want an NHL spot right away while Knies, who I'm sure Dubas wants on the team now and desperately needs, has unfinished business and wants to win a championship title at a big program. Shows character imo. Plus he will still have the opportunity to join the Leafs at the end of the season like Abbruzese did. Would be like a big deadline boost getting a big power forward coming in hot off a big run.

You can use whatever analogy you want. Doesn't change the fact that the regular season is a better representation of team quality. And again, Leafs were better in both the regular season and playoffs anyway.

Of course not. That doesn't mean he's going to repeat one of the best goaltending seasons in the cap era every year. He could put up a season like the year before, where his total GSAx was less than 10% of what it was this past year. Or, as is most likely, he'll be somewhere in the middle of those two.

They don’t hand out trophies for second place division finishes and regular season “quality”.

It doesn't take much more than a basic understanding of sport, not just hockey, to know that post season play is really all that matters.

Indeed, some people do look at the full 82 game season stats on the back of the hockey card but I think it’s usually because they aren’t enjoying an actual championship run and want to look for positives elsewhere. Hell, I’d take an NBA championship or a World Series in sports I care far less about than only regular season dominance. This isn’t Premier League.

Such a loser attitude and mentality.

Cups are what people remember in hockey because that's actually what the goal is, not playoff position to enter into the Cup tournament

If the Leafs as a team/coaching staff/management group take this sort of satisfaction of their regular season, I guess that could explain why they don't win diddly-squat come playoff time when it actually matters.

What a joke.

I think we should run the course with kerfoot. See out our kadri trade. Before it's another breakout for another team situation.

Just free up holl and mrazek.

Makes sense but we may not have that luxury.

As Avs produce the latest template, all of their top four forwards play with intensity, grit, and physicality, and we see the value of having those players at the top of the lineup. With Kerfoot, our top five paid forwards lack those attributes.

We can't keep borrowing money from D and G, so how do we bridge the gap?

I don’t know what he’ll do, but it’s safe to say this is his last kick at the can.

My guess is he’ll trade Mrazek and an asset to sign Campbell, maybe Engvall, and then fill the roster with Marlies.

He may want to get Sandin signed or moved before FA starts or he could get an OS.

If their jobs are actually on the line I don't think they want Campbell back, he's had 5 cracks at elimination games and has been out played in all of them. 3 of those games went to overtime and he made 5 total saves in 3 overtimes. He was also awful the 2nd half of the season.

I have no idea what a better option looks like , but i think you're right about freeing up Mrazek's cap space to fill the position
