Speculation: What do the Rangers do?

Currently as it stands the New York Rangers are battling for their playoff lives sitting 2 points out.

But With Adam Fox, KA Miller and Chris Krider all out with injury the question becomes what do they do?

It's the NYR, they don't sell, and if they do it doesn't last.

I remember that rebuild letter they wrote to fans a few years ago that rebuild lasted about 5 minutes.

Point is I'm sure some fans want a rebuild I don't think It's going to happen It's not the Ranger way.

unless they go on losing streak between now And March 7th, think they make a push.

I think you will see them potentially move out Lindgren, Smith, Vesey, Kaliyev, Jones.

Less likely Kreider, Miller, Panarin.

I don’t think they will be trading for picks. Probably more likely trying to get guys and extend them that fit drurys vision more likely trying to grab guys like Borgen and Miller so either make trades for guys they want and extend or with some term.

Just stay the course. Keep putting too much pressure and blame on young players, then trade them if they call you on it. Trade away talent for no reason. Bully established vets into waiving their trade protection. Waive well liked players.

Just trust in Drury and things will keep looking up.

Drurys the reason why they suck so bad this year! But hey I am all for it, go Chris!

Drury SHOULD move Panarin and re-tool, but Panarin will block any trade. They will probably stand pat or see if anyone wants Kreider...but that is starting to look like an offseason move.

That's the joke.

I'm not seriously suggesting that steps like "trade away talent for no reason" will lead to success. My post was supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek criticism of all the failures from Drury that lead them here. But apparently it was too subtle?

Seems weird that the Rangers even have to hand out all these NMC. Are they saving that much money?

That letter was seven years ago, before the 2018 NHL trade deadline and you are completely mischaracterizing both the letter, and what happened after it.

At the deadline, they traded their captain Ryan McDonagh, Rick Nash, J.T. Miller, Michael Grabner and Ryan Graves and they acquired multiple 1st round picks, multiple second round picks and players. (One of the 1st rounder, Nils Lundqvist was swapped for another first round pick later on. The 1st they got for Nash was swapped for the pick they used to select K'Andre Miller.)

They moved out multiple key, valued, veteran players shortly after that "letter." You can dismiss it as a rebuild that lasted five minutes, but that doesn't change the fact that they moved out key, beloved players to change the face of their team. Claiming it was a "five minute" rebuild isn't really backed up by the facts, either. In 2019, leading up to the deadline, the Rangers traded Mats Zuccarello for a second and a third pick, they traded Kevin Hayes, for a 1st and a 4th and Adam McQuaid for two picks. Armed with all of this extra picks, in the 2019 off-season they traded a 2nd and a 3rd for Adam Fox and a 1st (acquired for Hayes) and Neil Pionk for Jacob Trouba. At the 2020 deadline, they were at it again moving Brady Skjei from. 1st round pick.

It's also worth noting that what you are calling the "Rebuild" letter never once mentions a rebuild. It simply states that they want to lay the foundation for the Rangers next Stanley Cup Champion.

I didn’t say these guys had high value but championship teams need depth.
 
I'm expecting them to trade Lindgren, Smith and maybe Vesey, if anyone wants him, no matter where they are in the standings.

I'm also expecting them to be trying to find more hockey trades. I don't think they'll bring in any rentals.

In other words, they're not squarely buyers or sellers.

A Kreider trade is likely a summer deal, and I wonder if Drury will press hard to move Zibanejad too.

That's a good question---what will Drury do.

If it were me I'd be selling if nothing else the upcoming UFA's---namely Lindgren, Smith, Vesey anyway. I think the Rangers will want to find another home for Zac Jones.

Kreider would be for sale but I wouldn't sell him cheap. Apparently he's been dealing with back issues all season or some extended part of it. I'm not convinced he's on a decline. I'm more convinced Mika is. It has been a down year for Chris for sure. Last year he was a 39 goal 70 point player and in the last 3 playoffs he's put in 24 goals in 43 games against playoff quality opponents. Prorate that to an 82 game season and that works out to about a 45 goal season. If he rebounds next year to somewhere around where he was his $6.5 mil contract will be great for whatever team he's playing for. If he doesn't well---it's still not a contract that kills a team if he just knocks in 25 pucks which he might do this year if he's not out too much longer.

Zibanejad I would absolutely move. I just don't think it's going to be easy at all. Might hurt more to get some other team to take him than it would be worthwhile for us as far as retention and other assets that might have to go with him to make it happen.

Those are my thoughts. How Drury sees things could be a lot different.
