Did a fun thing to kill some time. I went and looked at all the drafts from 2010-2020. I redrafted every position where we actually made a choice (didn't count traded draft picks) to select the bpa (could be some debate here - especially in 2011 where I took Hamilton instead of Nuge and Kucherov instead of Klefbom). The only other time I made an exception was choosing Batherson over Swayman because I already had vasilevski and shesterkin. Only kept Hyman, Perry and Walman/Eckholm as adds that we wouldn't have drafted. I couldn't decide between the two trades for Walman and Eckholm, so just put them both in as a "one or the other".

Seguin McDavid Hyman
Robertson Draisaitl Tkachuk
Kaprizov Kucherov Caufield
Carrier McLeod Holloway
Perry, Batherson

Fox Hamilton
Slavin Bouchard
Morrisey Walman/Eckholm
Faulk

Vasilevskiy
Shesterkin

Here is the original draftees:

Hall McDavid Hyman
Nuge Draisaitl Plujujarvi
Yammamoto M.A Roy Benson
Pitlick McLeod Yakapov
Moroz, Perry

Nurse Bouchard
Klefbom Caleb Jones
Walman/Eckholm Lagesson

Skinner
Rodrigue

I will take team A please...

hindsight is 20/20 and all that but so many asset f*** ups have cost us dearly

one of the many reasons we don't have a cup with two generational talents being gifted to us

At some point if you are drafting and developing all the best players your draft position is changing down the line

I.E. You aren't getting McDavid
Yes, I get that. We also wouldn't have cap for these people. The point is a commentary on drafting... got anything to add about that?

pretty far behind in playoff points per game for bpa
There are a gazillion things you could take into account. Who did better staying healthy? Centre vs winger.
Hall has an MVP, Seguin has a cup. It is pretty close and for the sake of our drafting, really not much difference.

Seguin leads the 2010 draft class in games (741), goals (279), assists (356) and points (635). Simply went bpa.
He also didn’t work out for hiis draft team either. He needed a change of scenery to become what he became.

What you had was the original picks until someone collected all the infinity stones and undid everything and now we are left with Doom and gloom

I hate the term gifted to us. The fans suffered through over a decade of absolute garbage players we were not gifted shit we earned it

Taking Hall over Seguin was the correct call and I will die on that hill.
Agreed

What should be changed from that draft day is the Oilers should have accepted the 2nd overall pick from Boston/Chiarelli for Eberle when it was offered and taken both Hall and Seguin.

You could do this for every team.
If hfboards had proper servers and had preserved all past information this board would've made far better drafts than the Oilers did. Thats not revisionist.

This is an org that picked Steve Kelly with their first pick instead of Shane Doan. With every fan in the stands at Rexall trying to help them chanting "Doan".

If we could undo 3 things, and get it right it would be:

Yak for Vasilevsky
Pulju for any of Tkachuk, Sergachev or McAvoy
Use 2015 picks for Barzal and Sebastian Aho or Roope Hintz

Hf also would have drafted Bennett over Draisaitl. It goes both ways but generally I agree with you more often than not any of us idiots probably could have done as good a job if not better.

I’d call the two of them a wash. Neither one ended up being the player it was hoped they’d be. Seguin would have been a disaster here too. He had a lot of off ice issues when he was a kid and would have likely wanted out of the Edmonton fishbowl pretty early.

Sure. Last night they were talkng during telecast about the 2017 draft. You and everybody on the board knows I would NEVER have drafted Yamamoto. Few picks down is Ottinger. But the shocking thing would be how does the whole draft sleep on guys like Robertson? A guy with size and that was Scoring big goals in Junior? Seemed to be the peak time frame where the draft was distorted to picking small players, Euro players etc.

Its interesting how Dallas basically made their roster on that draft. The most dominating drafting since say Oilers were doing it in 80, 81

The thing is too, and I wish the thread was around. There were posters here saying how much the Stars cleaned up in that draft. How well they did. It was that fairly obvious in realtime. Most NHL GM's are dolts getting sand kicked in their faces at draft.

Taylor Hall was not a disaster in Edmonton. He was a star.

The Oilers were a disaster.

Jason Arnott vibes? I liked Arnott too. Fanbase was so vicious to him. Was plain ugly being in the stands. A spoiled fanbase were basically raining their displeasure at the teams demise to Arnott, who even as rookie was their best player.
