Okay, I came across this remarkable game, which is the (1st-year Messier) Rangers @ Capitals, Dec. 26th 1991:

Summary: New York Rangers at Washington Capitals Box Score — December 26, 1991 | Hockey-Reference.com

Here's the video of the entire game:

The notable thing is, the Capitals build a 6-1 lead in the first period... and lose the game in three periods (final score 8-6 Rangers).

So, this makes me wonder: Has any club ever come back to win from a larger than 5-goal deficit in the first period? (Especially not needing overtime.)

And what are the biggest deficits NHL teams have overcome in the 1st / 2nd / 3rd periods?

Still, it’s not as huge as the Miracle on Manchester. I’m curious if that’s both the greatest comeback AND largest deficit to come back from in NHL playoff history? For a third period comeback it should be up there.

Almost everything found when googling it is about that game, but it might be because it was a more monumental occurrence than a 7-0 lead lost at some other point.

I do wonder if a team has ever won a game after trailing by more than five goals at any point. I do know of blown five-goal leads.

The Leafs were leading the Blues 5-0 in the third period of a game in late 2000. The Blues scored five goals in the third and won the game in OT.

In late '89 TOR came back from a 6-1 deficit against BOS and won that game in OT.

That's got to be the biggest third-period comeback ever in the playoffs, and maybe in NHL history from the third period, along with the Maple Leafs - Blues one listed above.

However, there still is only one example listed (Colorado - Florida, in post #2) of a five-goal deficit overcome without needing overtime.

Habs were down 5-1 against the Rangers with I think 10 minutes left in the 3rd and won 6-5 (maybe in OT). Maybe about 10 years ago...

It was 5-0 after 25 mins. But they made it 5-2 before 3rd period, and tied it 5-5 with about 6 mins left. Won in shootout in the end 6-5.

They said it was biggest comeback in league history (tied for). Which implies 5 goal deficit is biggest, there inst a 6 goal comeback to find somewhere

First one that springs to mind.

Colorado trails Florida 5-0 (Bure with a hattrick) when 18:11 in the second period, Forsberg put Colorado on the scoreboard.

Colorado follows this up with six unanswered goals in the third period to win the game 7-5. Forsberg’s statline: 3-3-6.

Forsberg was such a bulldog. Obviously that’s a career type night, but it’s amazing how in just one game you get multiple highlights of his strength on the puck and ability to attack the net.
