I think he's just too soft for the smaller ice. On bigger ice he'd have more time to avoid contact.

Hockey is a collision sport. You can't play scared. Age old story, guy got a guaranteed 90+ mil contract and thought "hey, why exactly would I break my body when I'm already guaranteed a lifetime of money?"
Let's make the ice bigger then. only in Vancouver though, deal ?

This is so over stated by sports fans. In the absence of evidence people default to this when in reality it could happen for a number of reasons. He's also earned 25M USD already so guaranteed a lifetime of money already happened before the new contract.

Word was that he was injured from the All Star break and onwards last season, after pacing well over 100 points for one and a half season prior to that, and now he’s like a shell of his former self? Is there an injury in the background no one’s talking about?

His first two months in the league was eye popping good. Couple of rough handling from opponents he never played stellar again. More than injuries behind it, probably shattered confidence.

Because the last thread is critical and calling out Pettersson, this one will stay open because it’s genuinely caring about what is the matter with Elias.

I'm still convinced if Mike Matheson had never tombstoned him into the ice in his 5th game, he would have turned into an unstoppable force. That dirty play made him physically tentative, and despite his excellent play for the remainder of the season, he never quite showed the same level of confidence as he did in those first few games.

Jt Miller is the best forward on the canucks. He continually proves it and petterson continues being the one who gets poofed up.

He’s pretty much this generation’s Alexandre Daigle.

He maintained a 110 point pace from December 2021 to February 2024 and then he got depressed or some shit. He has an incredibly fragile ego and when he’s playing like shit it snowballs 1000x over into whatever the f*** kind of mental state he is in right now.

You see this type of thing with 50 point guys, not from an elite star forward. 100 point Selke caliber centerman but as soon as things don’t go his way he devolves into whatever the f*** this is. He did this exact same type of thing all of 2021.

He has the talent to be a top 10 player in this league but he needs to overcome his mental limitations. He needs whatever the hell treatment/support that Mackinnon had. Some players need extracurricular support, especially sensitive guys like him.

I mean he’s certainly played stellar again, with a 100 point season, but there was a different sort of bending the game to his will about the start of his career that he hasn’t shown with any consistently since. He’s been much more cerebral and opportunistic since, even in his good periods.

Pettersson is probably hampered by an injury which neither he or his team can control properly. Vancouver still want him to play because of his contract and importance while the player probably knows what he should do (rehab) but can't because he wants to be there as well. Painkillers aren't helping and he's probably having issues on the ice. The result being mediocre play from someone who's a really good player.

Fans and media (often people with no idea of what really happens behind the scenes) making a major fuss about the whole thing calling him out for his contract (which Vancouver accepted to sign btw) and play in general.

"Fans and media often have no idea"
so they try and guess what the problem is like you just did.
