What’s up with Byfield?

There were a ton of high expectations for Byfield going into the season after his mini breakout last season, with some claiming hes about to really breakout and become the best of his draft class.

He has 3G/10pts in 24 games for a 10g/34pt pace.

I’ve watched all of zero LA games this season, what’s up with that poor production

Ive admittedly always had concerns for Byfield being a true star player, but have certainly expected more than this kind of production in his D+6…

Last year he had better line mates. So it was sort of a fake mini breakout.

Idk ive always been down on him. Will never be an elite player IMO.

Of course on my own team we have a guy Strome who was drafted 3rd overall then sucked for years and is now finally becoming an elite player, 9 years later. So you never know.

I will toot my own horn, but I never saw the hype with him. Always had people telling me he deserved his 2nd pick because he plays a dominant heavy game in juniors, but he never seemed very skilled in comparison to his peers. Kind of a typical big dude who looks great against other juniors, but doesn't really translate into the NHL that well. Had hopes from Kings fans that he would replace Kopitar over time, but never saw it myself. He will be quite middling through his career, with maybe a few good years that make you think he will finally break out into that Kopitar replacement, but probably nothing better than that.

You don’t need to get me started on the Byfield defenders. I was called a racist (lol) because I saw a guy who constantly struggled when he played against the best of the best in his age groups.

Yup. Byfield over Stutzle was such a huge miss by the Kings, one that was painfully obvious before draft day even. One good half season from Byfield doesn't change that

He's 22 and you're acting like it's career has peaked

Kings and grossly mishandling top prospects, name a better duo?

Waiting for Doughty on PP1 and Spence on PP2 when Doughty gets back because f*** Clarke’s development.

Kings have drafted some of my most favourite prospects and just mishandles them to get beat by the Oilers every year.

When I do my daily stats breakdown in the International Thread, I put QB into the Negative box before his game even starts.

Even Shane Wright has found his way out. No idea what is going on with QB.

The guy looks to be suffering from Frank Seravallivitis... 22 going on 42. Maybe he lied about his draft age? :sarcasm:

I did say he would probably have a stretch of years where it looks like he is finally looking like a solid player, so no I don't think he peaked just yet, but it's not going to be a Kopitar - like peak where he's a dominant 2 way forward. At best, he will most likely be 2nd line center with a few 70-80 point seasons, but nothing you would want from a franchise center selected at #2

He sat most of last year being the 3rd wheel with Kopitar and kempe. Anytime they tried to have him drive his own line his numbers plummeted. This year they're trying to have him drive his own line as a C and again, his numbers are not great.

So out of towners looking at stats pat themselves on the back about nonsense? Must be a Byfield thread.

Dude is playing just fine, but there is clearly something wrong with one of or both of his wrists. He had the same problem two years ago. Everything he does is right, but he has absolutely no touch on the puck right now. He is pushing it forward and to teammates, his shots are just thrown at the net. Watch him tonight, right place right time, just no feel for the puck. His confidence is down as well which has affected his judgement at times.

He is still generating tons of chances, he is a top penalty killer, just having a really, really hard time getting the puck to go where he wants it. He isn't stick handling as much as shoveling pucks around.

I never bought that he had arrived. There’s flashes of skill. Not much flashes of dominance. He makes lots of nice one touch plays. But I don’t see him carrying the puck and driving play enough to think he’ll ever live up to his draft position.

To me it looks like he's struggling to convert back to center. It might be that his game style with his outside speed might be more suited to playing wing.
