Winnipeg Sun: The year in review, Jets edition. Ken Wiebe shares his top 10 Winnipeg Jets memories from the past year. We discussed this on yesterday’s Illegal Curve Hockey Show and I said my best memory was hearing the 15,004 fans in the MTS Centre chanting “GST, GSTâ€, as the name pushed by IC, was embraced by fans. What were your top memories from 2012?

NBC Sports: Canadians largely holding on to NHL season tickets. Congrats Winnipeg. We hold the distinction of not having 1 season ticket cancelled because of the lockout. Cannot say I am surprised by this news.

TSN: Chiarot nets OT winner as Icecaps complete five goal rally. We spoke to Telegram sports editors Robin Short yesterday on the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN Radio 1290 and asked him about the missing offence. It sure showed up last night as St. John’s scored 5 straight to win in OT.

CBA news:

Globe and Mail: NHL and players’ union need more information before collective bargaining can resume. Working out the little kinks is going to take quite a bit of time still.

CBC: Don Cherry thinks NHL may be playing into NHLPA’s hands. They have likely blinked but at this point who cares. The NHL is still getting a great deal, even if it meant some concessions to the NHLPA.

Edmonton Journal: New offer means nothing in the face of Fehr’s delay tactics. Adler does not seem very fond of Fehr and his tactics.

Globe and Mail: Fehr must decide if Bettman’s drop-dead date is a bluff. Just what fans want to see, Fehr pushing this deal closer and closer to the brink so he can wring a bit more out of the NHL.

World Juniors:

National Post: Goaltenders steal show in Canada’s win over US. Big win for Team Canada over rival Team USA. Goalie Malcom Subban played his best game in the win while Jets prospect Jacob Trouba scored another goal.

Edmonton Journal: Canadians make no apologies for style. Nor should they have to. They play hard and without trying to sound like a Team Canada apologist, they continue to play with the standard Canadian physical presence.

Globe and Mail: The switch to European officiating haunts Team Canada again. While there are complaints about the reffing, the reality is you have to adjust to the level of officiating.

Toronto Star: Canada vs. US packed with storylines. For Jets fans the biggest plot will 2012 pick Jacob Trouba hit 2011 pick Mark Scheifele?

Detroit Free Press: Michigan’s Jacob Trouba headlines USA hockey team. The first pick in the 2012 draft for the Jets has been selected as an alternate captain for Team USA.

Winnipeg Sun: ‘Twas the night before Christmas. Paul Friesen reviews the year in sports in poem format. Plenty of Jets references in his work.

Jets overseas: EHC Red Bull München vs. Düsseldorfer EG. Blake Wheeler looked very good skating with his EHC Red Bull Munchen teammates yesterday. He had a number of breakaways as well as finished with 2 assists in the Germany DEL game. He was nominated 2nd star of the game for his effort.

CBC: Don Cherry back Evander Kane on twitter. In case you missed it, the Coach was tweeting yesterday backing up Evander on his recent twitter actions.

CBA news:

Toronto Sun: KHL's top boss rips both sides for lockout. Normally it is not very nice to kick a rival when they are down although in this instance, he is quite right.

Toronto Star: No sign of talks by Christmas. Day 100 reached and still we have to deal with the game of chicken. I suspect we might see some chatter this week.

Toronto Star: Even if NHL owners, players reach some sort of deal, the damage has been done. Count me in as someone who will be happy once this situation is resolved one way or another. While I clearly want to see NHL hockey being played very soon, the constant games being played by both sides is just too much at this point. The damage done is immeasurable as Cox suggests.

World Juniors:

Globe and Mail: The good, the bad and the Terrible of the world junior tournament. Roy lays out the good, bad and terrible things about the tournament in a way only he can.

Calgary Herald: Pressure and expectations mix with dreams of gold for Team Canada. Nothing is preordained. Just because the last two Team Canada teams who played during a lockout walked through those respective tournaments doesn’t mean that same will happen here.

Montreal Gazette: Wake-up call available . What better way to wake up in the morning than with TSN personalities Jay Onrait and Dan O’Toole.

USA Today: Team USA makes two cuts to world juniors roster. The Americans led by Seth Jones have high expectations this tournament, despite the odds being against them.

Illegal Curve: Update on Jets players (and Eric Fehr) playing in various leagues across Europe, Russia and North America:

St. John’s IceCaps site: Christmas with Clarkie (video). Kevin Clark talks to Will O’Neill, Jason Jaffray and Ivan Telegin about their plans for the holidays, family traditions, and their favourite Christmas memories.

CBA news:

Edmonton Journal: No season could jeopardize 2013 entry draft. Basically it would be total thunderdome. Let us really hope that this is not the case.

CBC: Anthopoulos, Blue Jays helping distract angry NHL fans. As someone who considers himself a big Jays fans I can tell you that I am very excited for the MLB season to begin. With all the sports channels showing old reruns of the 1992 and 1993 World Series games (yesterday the Jays lost Game 1 to Atlanta. The tomahawk chop was on full display) it is easy to get excited for the upcoming season with many having World Series expectations.

World Juniors:

CBC: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins enjoys impressive world junior debut. Impressive first game and the Jets Mark Scheifele added 2 goals in the 9-3 win.

TSN: Yakupov ready to keep cool against “dirty†Canadians. Apparently the Canadian reputation (in hockey) preceded the team to Russia.

Calgary Herald: JC Lipon the unexpected player on Team Canada’s. Players who are not drafted tend to have a chip on their shoulder and Lipon, who has excelled in the WHL for Kamloops this season, brings a number of intangibles to this Team Canada squad.

Globe and Mail: Canada’s Boone Jenner suspended three games for late hit by IIHF. Cannot say I am terribly surprised by this suspension.

CBC: Malcolm Subban named Canada’s starting goalie. Team Canada announced the selection over twitter, which is an interesting way to reveal the starting goalie. Subban didn’t have the strongest performance in the pre-tournament games but will likely be at the top of his game as the tournament gets underway.

ESPN: 10 ways for NHL to recover from lockout. First end the lockout and then we can discuss recovering from it.

NHL news:

Globe and Mail: A lesson in NHL chemistry. The Oilers are going to be a very scary team in the near future.

Phoenix Business Journal: Phoenix Coyotes stand to turn profit if they stay off the ice. It seems like Jamison has been closing this deal forever, forever, forever. Won’t it be nice when this Phoenix deal gets resolved one way or another.

World Juniors:

TSN: Canada enjoys early production from “Lockout Lineâ€. Jets fans should be happy with seeing Mark Scheifele, the future face of the franchise, having early success with his two linemates.

CBC: Cherry hits back at Nail Yakupov for calling Canadians ‘dirty’. If there is one thing you do not do around Donald Cherry is make disparaging remarks about Canadian hockey.

National Post: Russia opens with slim overtime victory over Slovakia. Allowing the Slovaks to send it to OT cost Russia a point as the OT victory only gave them 2 points, instead of the 3 you get if you win in regulation.

College Hockey News: Team USA faces tough road at World Juniors. Jets fans will be interested to pay attention to Jacob Trouba as he will be counted on to help Team USA when they face the highly talented teams in their group.

Winnipeg Free Press: Too much at stake to not reach deal says Hainsey. According to Darren Dreger (Among the changes in the new proposal, the NHL adjusted its max contract length from 5 to 6 yrs. Boosted the variance from 5% to 10%. TSN has posted further details here.) the NHL has made an offer on Thursday with some movement. What we need now is someone from both sides to drag Fehr and Bettman into a room and finish this thing off.

St. John’s IceCaps official site: IceCaps wrap up pre-Christmas slate. The Rock Report brings you up to speed on the latest happening with the Jets AHL affiliate. The IceCaps are back in action tonight against Hamilton, the team they played last Friday.

The Coloradoan: A holiday wish list for the Colorado Eagles. Here are three things Colorado will be looking for during the rest of the season.

CBA news:

ESPN: Highlights of NHL's proposal. Now we will see what the NHLPA has to say. I still think they may try and wait and gain a few more concessions.

CBC: Red Wings, Leafs key to resolving lockout. Ron MacLean makes his argument for paying the talent.

Winnipeg Sun: NHL, NHLPA at edge of the cliff. At this point, with the season teetering on the brink, it seems like both sides have to pull their heads from the sand and take a look around. Both continue to take the fans for granted and while the impact will likely be negligible in Canada, in parts of the U.S. which can ill afford the apathy, I suspect we are about to see some big repercussions from this lockout.

Globe and Mail: Lockout remains at standstill as chance to save season slips away. Many seem resigned to watch both sides remain pat as they wait until the last possible second to get a deal done. While I enjoy a good procrastination, this has to be the last week of inactivity before the flurry of season saving activity I suspect we will see next week.

Globe and Mail: Fans unlikely to embrace the NHL as they did after the last lockout. Perhaps we here in Winnipeg live in a bubble but I just do not see any negative type reaction towards the Jets once this lockout gets resolved. Fans in Manitoba are just too happy to have NHL hockey back to hold a grudge. I also suspect that the other Canadian markets will also be quick to forget the lockout.

Globe and Mail: The NHL’s last big comeback. It appeared that all the pieces of the puzzle fell into place after the last lockout and many question whether this can happen again. Will lightning strike twice? As I suggested yesterday, perhaps they need to resolve the lockout first before we worry about the post-lockout reaction.

NHL news:

Globe and Mail: Not even U.S. green card can lure investors. So many jokes so little time. Just based on the team name (Coyotes) and the fact that this word is synonymous with smugglers and with the aim of this program being to get a VISA for cash, the joke really writes itself.

Globe and Mail: Today’s Oilers as seen through Paul Coffey’s eyes. Always interesting to hear the perspective of a former great. Especially when he discusses the team that he achieved so much of his success with.

CBC: Canada rebounds against defending Spengler Cup champs. Speaking of the Oilers, Edmonton’s goalie Devan Dubnyk backstopped the Canadian effort yesterday in the 5-0 rout of the defending champs.

World Juniors:

TSN: Down to 10 forwards, Canada rallies past Slovakia. Team Canada is not making it easy for itself with games like this.

Toronto Star: Pressure on Russia to win home tournament. There is always a high expectation when you are the host country. This is probably even more so right now as anyone who heads to Russia to play competitive hockey has to have thoughts about the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

Globe and Mail: Middle of nowhere discovered in Ufa. Sounds a lot like Winnipeg, with the central location and the crazy drivers.

USA Today: USA routs Germany with balanced attack at WJC. The Jets Jacob Trouba looked very good defensively for the Americans. He added a nice goal and looked solid throughout the game.

TSN: Rising star MacKinnon adjusting to fourth-line role. It really is a testament to the dedication of the team concept to see players who are easily the top on their Jr. team adopting a role they are not used to being asked to play, in order for the team to achieve success.

SI.com: Winnipeg, Columbus may switch conferences in shortened NHL season. Looks like the Jets and the team they first played in their return to the NHL migt be making a change. Would certainly make travel a lot easier. Bye Bye Eastern Conference? Perhaps this is why Illegal Curve’s Drew Mindell was in Columbus, Ohio yesterday.

Winnipeg Free Press: Some fans boycotting NHL gear. I guess one or two individuals does count as “fans†but I seriously doubt that Jets gear has been impacted. While sales are not going to be what they were last year, we have already seen that they are very healthy here in Winnipeg.

TSN: Dumont leads Bulldogs past IceCaps. It appears the Christmas break wasn’t enough to fix what ails the IceCaps as the team continues to struggle.

The Coloradoan: Colorado falls short to begin series in Alaska. Heading to Alaska cooled off the hot December that the Eagles were having.

CBA news:

CBC: Sides to review new CBA proposal by phone. While you are listening to the Illegal Curve Hockey show the two sides will be reviewing the details of the NHL’s offer over the phone.

Globe and Mail: A look at the NHL’s proposal. Taking a look at the new changes the NHL has made to make this deal more palatable to the NHLPA.

CBC: Sides still have plenty to do. If your head hasn’t popped off yet it is sure to in the next week or so as the sides haggle.

Globe and Mail: New hope for hockey’s return. Well now we at least have an official end date for this never ending story.

Calgary Herald: NHL, NHLPA playing all of us for rubes. The big question is will the NHL/owners and NHLPA do anything to appease fans?

Globe and Mail: Season-ticket holders stand by their teams. Is anyone surprised that fans are staying loyal? 100,000 Canadian season ticket holders and 200 canceled tickets, which you know were snapped up in less than no time.

World Juniors:

CBC: JC Lipon suspended 1 game for head shot. Losing another player for Team Canada doesn’t help. The Canadians need to show better self control as the tournament continues.

Ann Arbor.com: Michigan defenseman Jacob Trouba scores lone Team USA goal in 2-1 loss to Russia. The Jets prospect continues to look very good this tournament.
