today’s coaching errors aren’t all personally on McDermott but he remains The Guy. The buck stops there if the d-coordinator is mismanaging situations and he doesn’t override. Granted, you need to have confidence in your men to do their jobs, but when they aren’t, the leader needs to take charge

It’s not a true bills season with McD until they lose the game of the year

He's the best your going to get here, but remember Captain Sobel in Band Of Brothers ?

If it was once or twice we could forget it, it's not, it's a pattern

tbh I feel we have a once in a lifetime QB and it will be wasted

I don't mind McDermott being a defensive head coach.

What bothers me is (a) that doesn't seem to help our defense from laying an egg every postseason; and (b) it causes him to have too much faith in his own defenses, even when they don't deserve it.

I still wouldn't even think of firing him. Door #2 is almost certianly worse. But yeah, that annoys me.

Yes, for example not firing the special teams coordinator anytime the last 2 years lays at his feet.

Will fix everything
A micro issue is sub optimal playcalling in down two score situations. To McDermott's credit, us being down two scores is a rarity. You might be able to count the end game situations where this would have mattered on a single hand in his career. Its not good he made a mistake here, but its a minor issue and isn't why we lost.

The bigger issue is the team wasn't ready to play. The offensive playcalling wasn't good in the first half and relied on Josh's legs way too much. In the second half is was better, but that first drive going 3 and out was really a turning point. Getting down 17 just was a killer.

The defense wasn't great vs SF last week. The SF was able to gash us while the game was close. It only slowed down when McCaffery was injured. Once we were up 20+ points it was a non issue, especially with the weather.

If this is the wake up call the defense needed, then great. It was outstanding vs the Chiefs.

But, lets be real, we haven't played good offenses.

Outside of Baltimore, the highest ranked offense we faced was Houston, and that was 11th. And Baltimore thrashed us. We were beat up, sure. But they still thrashed us. We've given up 268 points in 13 games. 79 of those are in two games. When the playoffs start, there will only be good offenses left.

They need to nut up or shut up vs Detroit.

Per Sean, not helping Smileys cause, we only had 9 players on the field for the punt.
And for some reason the plan was for no return OR a max block? That really made no sense

I don't think it's a matter of "sleepwalking players start playing better."

The wakeup call needs to be personnel changes. I hope, but doubt, that happens

The doghouse
I’m just not into the overreactions. This is one of the best teams in the leagues. The other top teams are equally, if not more, flawed.

On a day with a historically bad defensive performance and a special teams TD, we lost by two. That’s what it takes to beat this team when the offense is rolling somewhat

Tough loss, ultimately you just have to embrace the positives and move on. Not going to win very many games when you surrender 44 points. We still win without the punt block return. Offense did work, they went out there and balled out. Tyler was perfect, that’s a positive mark. Pretty sure I saw a graphic that Josh is the first player in league history to have 3 PTD and 3 RTD in a single game so kudos to him and all his fantasy owners. Defense has to be better. It’s not debatable that the defense got worse when Milano was inserted. He’s a superior player but he’s not playing a superior game right now, and that’s okay…there’s time and it makes total sense to have him get up to game speed when the playoffs are literally locked up already. We were better with Dorian but we can be next level with healthy, game speed Matt. I get it, makes sense. One missed block on special teams changed the tide and outcome, shit happens. It was a fun game to watch and we’re on to the next one. Don’t lose sight. Eye on the prize.

Don’t disagree but until they actually win one, the unforced errors in big moments will cause consternation looking toward the playoffs

Win one and it’s easier to give the benefit of the doubt

Or where he pulls something and out coached another persons blunder to win an important close game. That will shut the door on the narrative.

Like, you want to take bad timeouts and allow questionable playcalls on both sides? You want to hang on to terrible coordinators for too long? That’s fine if you’ve actually done the thing. Until you do, it’s just another sign that you probably aren’t good enough.

It’s not even a championship standard. It’s literally a standard no team satisfies, but you you get an “excused” if you have previously won a superbowl.
Well, yeah. The anxiety is “this guy fumbles it in big situations and will do so again, thereby making a championship impossible.” A championship disproves that

Every teams does. Multiple times a season. Probably Andy Reid’s defining characteristic for over a decade before he won a superbowl

and allow questionable playcalls on both sides?

Every team does. Almost every game.

You want to hang on to terrible coordinators for too long?

Who are you even referring to?

right, impossible standard but you get a pass if you’ve won a Super Bowl
