TSN Insider Chris Johnston:

"Right now they are hoping he'll be available for that round one series, but I think it's not much more than hope at this point in time.

It does sound like from sources close to the situation, it's very possible Heiskanen is not available at all during the first round to the Dallas Stars. He had a knee surgery, has been out since the end of January. He did resume skating at the end of March, but that's a pretty long period of time to be recovering.

Obviously, when it comes to the playoffs, sometimes those injury timelines get shrunk and guys find a way to get back in the lineup, but right now it's far from a certainty we'll see Heiskanen in that first-round series."

Lindgren Manson
Girard Johnson

Should be the Avs defense lines Girard and Manson doesn't work they're all over the place most of the time Lindgren and Manson actually works Girard should play with Johnson go Avs go.

Malinski should be in before EJ IMO. Sam 2 worked hard all season and got a lot better by the end of the season. He also provides more offense and is much better on the breakout. If he struggles with playoff hockey he can always be swapped out.

Malinski played really well for the second half of the season but I would argue Erik Johnson outplayed him from the time he returned through the end of the season.

I'd see how Manson looks. If he's not himself he's worse than both of them.

Malinski is very important to Colorado’s transition game and is a rare player that fits all of the checkboxes for a Bednar defenseman.

- Retrieves with speed
- Retrieves under pressure
- Can make long stretch pass
- Can skate the puck out
- Joins the attack as a fourth option

I love EJ and having him back is a nice feel-good story but to my eyes he did not outplay malinski. I thought he was one of our worst defenders on any given night and his transition game is atrocious. He hasn’t been horrid defensively but our other defenders offer more at this point imo.

Get ‘em with a novel @Foppa2118!

If we beat Dallas, I’d actually prefer they have Heiskanen so there wouldn’t be that excuse, we only beat them because they didn’t have him

They’ve beaten us without valuable players before too. Shit happens, still a series win if they win.
True, I’m just saying it would be more satisfying to beat them with both teams having a full lineup, but you’re right, they’ve beaten us in the playoffs when we had key players out as well

 I mentioned last week that I thought Malinski should probably have a slight edge over EJ.

But he should only have one game of rope IMO, because his weaknesses with getting hit down low, and his game falling apart, are the kind of thing that gets targeted in the playoffs, while EJ's chemistry with Girard helps that second pair, and allows for Manson to play with Lindgren if they want.

Trying to be objective, I don't think EJ has been bad overall though. I thought he was pretty good the first five or so games, and the analytics backed that up. Especially protecting the puck and getting it back and forth to Girard to get out of the zone. They were honestly very good at this.

Then his play dipped when he was playing hurt, along with his skating, especially on his first shifts where it took a while to loosen up his lower body injury.

After that he's been ok. Couple iffy shifts but also a good game mixed in there. DIdn't watch the last two so can't comment on them. If he's skating well, he can play well. When he's not, it's a concern.

I'm happy EJ is back in a depth role, but I said before and after the deadline, I thought they needed to bring in a top 4 D man in addition to Lindgren. Any injuries will really test out the blueline.
