Doubt it. They'll go with someone older is my guess. There's guys playing in the KHL that have a shot too.
I look at the Olympics as a shark would approach a Remora.
Only bad things can happen in the Olympics...like injuries. Look at what has happened to some Kings players in the off-season, who have played, in particular Kopitar.
Mitchell didn't play but he got injured anyway.
It's idiotic to lose a player to injury in anything else then the professional team he plays for.
Really don't care for our guys in the Olympics, at all.

It's going to be especially meaningful for VV to make the team since the Olympics are in Sochi.
I think he makes it - Russians need puck movers and VV is one of the best. Combine that with a big ice surface, and he'll make a pretty compelling case. By the time Sochi rolls around, he'll have 2 seasons in the NHL plus 2+ more in the AHL, so he has plenty of pro experience.

This is my thought. Too many older players who have experience at international competitions and are closer to home. VV probably should make it, but I doubt he does.
DD was 20 yrs old and less experienced than VV when he made Team Canada. I think the whole experience thing is overrated, especially because I think there is a clear gap between what VV brings and the other candidates.
Markov is the only "lock" in my opinion. I think slugs like Volchenkov won't make the team especially on the big ice. Gonchar is past his prime. The CBJ duo is pretty meh. While the Russian forward core can hang with anyone, their D is pretty suspect. No one skates as well as VV and puck moving will be at a premium.

I'm not sure who the competition is in the KHL, so I'll leave that to someone else to comment on, but regarding the guys you listed, I think by the time comes for teams to start naming their rosters, Voynov will be slotted behind only Gonchar and Volchenkov, and that's strictly due to experience. Kulikov as well could be ahead of him, depending on who you talk too. I think Voynov's balanced overall talents get him the #7 spot if he can't land in the top 6 for some reason, he's just good at almost everything.

He's one of their top options. The Russian d-men in the NHL aren't a strong group. But the KHL is the wildcard and politics will be in play.

I think that's where Russia will turn to fill the remaining spots for the reason above. There are a good number of older Russian players in the KHL that can put up points and will probably have the inside track on VV.

I agree injuries would suck, but I'm still all for sending a guy to the Olympics. It's good for the game and good for the players involved. I'm especially excited for Kopitar.

If we win the cup again this year (and I think we have as good a shot as anyone), the Russian kid who plays pivotal minutes on defense and has two Stanley Cup rings is going to be pretty hard for the Russians to ignore...

Markov, Emelin for sure. Plus Nikitin from KHL. Others are 50/50. Gonchar and Babchuk will not do the roster.
I think most d-men will be from KHL. Too bad that Voynov did not play for Russia yet. It makes his chances worse.

I imagine there are 3 possibly 4 d-men in the KHL that will be on the 2014 team, so Voynov is in tough. The 3 for sure in my opinion are as you mentioned Nikulin, Kalinin and Medvedev. and I'll think we'll see at least one more KHL defenseman.
so, I don't think Voynov makes it, but I do like his game.
Hey guys, habs fan coming in peace. I'm thinking of trading for Voynov in my pool, do you see him keeping up with his current pace or has he stalled lately? I know many rookie Ds go though big slumps after good starts (see Subban lol).

Voynov played poorly last night on D, but as far as I can tell, its his only bad game of the season.
Otherwise, he has been a stud.

He's not a rookie really.
That said, I see him keeping it up. He's got a really mellow mannerism about him. Doesn't seem to get to high or low, and I think emotions play a lot into the sophmore slumps. He'll keep this up, and likely will get even better as the season goes on and the D gets healthy.
