There’s 32 of these, so in order to avoid cluttering HOH, I’m thinking 3-per-thread. All participants should be getting the survey soon too. And I’ll be adding the linking to the main thread on Monday or Tuesday.

We used to publish the full round 2 voting record of each participant, didn't we?

I wanted to see QPQ's and Steve141's voting record before claiming that I was the most goalie-friendly participant in R2.

.... And I just think I was.
EDIT : ... if you totally ignore that Terry Sawchuk and Vladislav Tretiak are goalies :)

Slide your thumb for right to left on the table. Table should move (at least it does on my iPhone).

I already did.

Still, desktop solves the issue for me. I needed to have the whole thing (1-10) in sight to get it. On the small mobile display, you only view a section and not the whole structure, which confused me.

Thanks guys.

Thanks guys.

I'd have given the details first, but I'm currently using IE7, and thus was soundly beaten by QPQ to the explanation.

Despite only being the highest on two goaltenders (Durnan and Joseph), I went goalie as #1 in 13 rounds including all of 14-21.

I ran pretty dry on wingers between Lafleur and Bossy, but I generally seem to have more balance across C/W/D/G than what we saw in the final list, which probably explains why I really felt we were behind on goaltenders in general as we got towards the end of the list - even if I wasn’t necessarily an outlier for any individual one except Durnan, who I had 7 spots ahead of the next highest voter.

.... I was a Screener in this project.
The bad thing is, having hanged around for a while, I could often guess the author of the lists.

I had guessed, accurately, @quoipourquoi's list. I didn't agree a lot with it, except as to the amount of goaltenders deserving to make it, but it wasn't anything I'd call problematic. Malkin-as-2nd-best-Russian did feel odd ... but as someone who (now) agrees that the two best québecois players are born on the exact same day, it's possible.

I had guessed accurately @Canadiens1958's list (it was Super Mario Bros. 1-1 difficulty level). I didn'T expect Erik Karlsson ranked. Didn't agree with some aspects, but saw no issue.

I hadn't guessed @steve141's came up with that list. I personnally really liked it on substance, but there were two issues (who felt, to a certain extent, like one issue) : no one born between MSL (1975) and Ovie (1985), which would be …. well, be a tad unprecedented in the history of calendar years. It's not that Keith, Chara, Thornton, Lundqvist, Luongo, Bergeron, Datsyuk and Iginla (and Kane, and Doughty, and Karlsson, and Kopitar) are missing : it's that none of them are listed, unless I missed something or the list was edited accordingly later on. Also, only three active players listed (what's Jagr's status?)

Lidstrom at 35 is probably what surprised me the most but I can see it. He had a very quiet and subtle style. How would he look on the Arizona Coyotes that Oliver Ekman-Larsson has played for during his career (not comparing them)? The second list was much more reasonable than I thought I'd find it even though I certainly do disagree with some rankings but there is mostly a clear line.

Can I ask what made you have Bobby Hull jump Wayne from round 1 to round 2?

That's the burning question, indeed. Does one think they've been a little egregious, ranking Gretzky too high at number six in the first round, only to lower him another slot to number seven during round two? Conceivably, one then concludes, "ah yes, now that feels right."

Periodically, a person's opinion in a given situation is merely without value, and I believe that's the case here. Some may direct this comment back at me, and that's fine. But when doing so please consider that, essentially, the entire hockey world disagrees with the notion that Wayne Gretzky is the seventh best hockey player of all-time.

Considering things in a historical context, I genuinely maintain a hard time valuing the opinion of anyone who doesn't rank Howe, Orr, Gretzky and Lemieux in some sort of consecutive order or adjacent tier. When someone ranks one of those players in a punitive manner, to me, it appears as if they have an axe to grind.

Gretzky /Hull. Questions about eras and decline. Gretzky, especially in the early 1980s was dominating the weakest era ever in NHL Hockey. Declined rather quickly as the shortshift became common, facilitating defensive hockey.

Hull, his first 10 NHL seasons was dominating the strongest era in NHL Hockey.

Scotty Bowman ranked Gretzky 5th. Interview in French.

To the shock of everybody, I disagree with most of this.

I am curious as to what puts Lemieux over Gretzky from your perspective though. Also if you have the time or inclination, your assessment of Gil Perreault, who was also in my Top 100 (I think) but we never discussed as he wasn't up for a vote.

Quoting myself:

What I am stating, however, is there's a certain mystique about producing an exceptionally talented homegrown player on your chosen team that you actively follow in your formative years. All these things in combination tend to cause individuals to elevate players beyond their proper status.

Scotty Bowman is from Quebec. Also, look at all those era-biased and homegrown players peppering the top-end of his rankings. Have you not paused to consider his favouritism? Have you not considered that it's also reinforcing your own bias?

Effectively, that's an extremely subjective opinion. And if you want to go down that road, you've ranked Orr at number one and he played in the weakest era in NHL history. There were 32 combined NHL/WHA teams during his prime, a number of professional teams only to be matched again in 2021. Scores of NHL depth players and a number of NHL stars played in the rival WHA league during this time. Without question, it negatively impacted the available NHL talent pool considerably during the 70s, most specifically from 1972-1977. Not to mention the fact that the NHL more than doubled in size from 1968 to 1972. The talent pool wasn't nearly big enough to keep up with this rapid expansion and I posit that it was a critical factor in the rise of goon hockey throughout this period.

Suggesting that Gretzky declined due to the short-shift game reflects a glaring lack of understanding with respect to this particular player or simply an inability to dissect his game. Gretzky was exhibiting an inevitable age-related decline until September 14th, 1991. To suggest anything else is simply disingenuous.

After Gretzky's back issues became ongoing, he definitely appeared to lose a portion of his quick first step and also a bit of his ability to generate quick-transition offence. I also firmly believe he began to appear weak with respect to his defensive responsibilities from that point onwards. He increasingly became a defensive liability during those passing years, especially as he approached retirement.

It is a well-positioned argument that the most successful defensive scheme occurs by merely possessing the puck and that's something Gretzky dominated nearly every shift, relative to his peers. Not to mention he was an incredible forechecker and one of the most outstanding takeaway players in NHL history. Unquestionably, once the puck entered his defensive zone, he primarily played the role of a winger. To wit, he maintained pressure on the defence because they feared a rapid transition to offence if the puck touched his stick. On a side note, the Oilers might equally enjoy eventual success by pushing McDavid to the half-wall in the defensive zone. He'd likely equally benefit from intimidating the right defence with regards to their commitment in the attack zone offensive scheme.

For whatever reason, you appear to sustain a fixation on a player's ability to back check, poke check and transition the puck back to the offensive possession players. I firmly believe that you're missing the bigger picture. I can find innumerable role players to perform that. They are a proverbial dime a dozen. It is nigh impossible to coach offensive creativity but you can impart defensive responsibility. Many players can definitely perform the latter better than Gretzky but they are not in his stratosphere with respect to puck possession and offensive dominance. At a certain point, a player's defensive acumen is more than washed out by an opposing player's ability to possess the puck and generate offence. Gretzky was that player, on steroids.

To reiterate, you seem to be fascinated by a player's performance without the puck. The most challenging thing in the game is to possess the puck and keep it away from others. It doesn't have to happen in the defensive zone, and they don't have to retrieve the puck themselves. As a coach, I can order a lesser talent to get it to my best possession players and most of the shift will take care of itself thereafter. Possession stars comprise the players I require on my team, first and foremost.

Gretzky's approach worked, and he has four Stanley Cups to prove it. Actually, he has more Stanley Cup rings than anyone you've ranked ahead of him, who wasn't conveyed the incredibly unfair advantage of playing during the sponsorship era. Do you sincerely believe all those Montreal players would have as many cups without the benefit of preferred player selection throughout that period? We are clearly aware of the answer to that in the present day because they haven't won a single Stanley Cup since the effects of that era finally dissipated.

Longevity and a healthy Lemieux, early twenties, outplayed Gretzky even though Gretzky had stronger teammates. Post Edmonton, Gretzky was an entourage player. Lemieux, injured and ill was better post 1993.

Gilbert Perreault, hampered by the smaller Buffalo rink.

Gretzky at #6 or #7 makes no sense. Honestly i expected you to at least have listed Henri Richard or someone else above him - and argue how you favor certain aspects of hockey a lot more than others, and in that way Gretzky being lower should be justifiable.

But you have two other offense first forwards - Hull and Lemieux - both ahead of Gretzky. It's simply a bad vote, that can't be justified.

Maybe Gretzky played in a weaker era than Hull in his first 10 seasons but he dominated by such a HUUUGE amount (vs Hull - is he even the best overall player in the NHL his first 10 seasons?) that it offsets any weaker or stronger era talk. Gretzky first 10 seasons >> Hull's first 10 seasons. If you include playoffs - it's even bigger advantage for Gretzky.

Also - Hull post age 33 is in the WHA. That's weaker than anything Gretzky had in the 80s in the NHL. And although there was definitely a lot of scoring and some weak teams in the 80s - there was also a ton of powerhouse teams against whom Gretzky always looked great, playoffs or regular season.

Bobby Orr is your #1 - his era in the NHL is arguably weaker than Gretzky's era.
Also - Orr simply didn't play past age 26 (outside of 30 games). Hull played in the WHA as of age 33. Yet Gretzky declining past age 31 (his decline includes a Ross, and his 93 playoff performance which is arguably better than any of Hull's, and scoring more points than anyone else in the NHL in the decade, and 2nd overall in PPG after Lemieux) is somehow enough to penalize him and bump him down to #7.
