I certainly don't need a cup win to call a season a success. However, I also find it hard to get very invested in anything that's happening if I feel like we're headed for another in a fairly long series of early exits from the post-season - and I do see some signs suggesting that. Sorry if some fans here have an issue with that. We all have different priorities. I enjoy the wins...and the start this year was a lot of fun. Hopefully things go differently this year once the regular season is over.
All you can hope for is that our new coaching staff can continue to iterate and improve on the team, getting them ready for the post season.
The Knights were extremely well rested and you could see midway through the first they got their skating legs underneath them.
Just because the road trip from hell is over doesn't mean the team isn't still fatigued. They haven't had 2 days off in a row since forever, and they still have their bumps and bruises. Add to that home responsibilities and to just think they are back to 100% is kind of naive.
I'm not saying they don't have work to do to figure out how to counter a big, aggressive team that has speed and forechecks well. That is job one for the coaches as the season progresses.
The NUMBER ONE thing the Jets can do immediately is to work on exits. Not just controlled exits but knowing when to pull the chute and just chip it out.
All they have to do is look at Vegas' tape to learn. Several times when the Jets were pressuring all they did was flip or chip and lived to fight another day.
For the controlled exits, one thing I am seeing that's different from the beginning of the year is there is far less close support when we get possession in our zone. If you can get 5-10 feet from the Jet with possession and into an empty spot that will go a long way to have good pressure releases and clean exits. If you can start doing that and turning the puck up ice you are going to start trapping the aggressive F's and having man advantages through the neutral zone which will allow for cleaner entries with possession and rush opportunities.
The added benefit to this is if you start getting man advantage breaks that is going to back the D off the bluelines which leads to more ice.
A lot of this fallback in my mind is due to the lack of practice to reinforce this and fatigue which can cause mental sluggishness and breakdowns.
