2019-20 Hellebuyck is one of the strongest arguments against the claim that a goalie can't backstop an atrocious defense to have a modicum of success. Not only do I think he had a better season than Miller, I think he should have been a Hart finalist.

The Jets were coming off losing 4 players from their defense the season before. They replaced Byfuglien, Trouba, Myers, and Chiarot with Pionk, Sbisa, Poolman and Bitetto. Morrissey's father got sick and he consequently had his worst season as a pro. Little, their best defensive forward, got injured 7 games into the season and didn't play again.

Counting Morrissey's worsening play because of his father's illness as a straight up loss of a player, the 2020 Jets lost 6 legitimate NHL players who all affected the Jets' defensive play and replaced them with one NHLer in Pionk and 5 players who were various levels of backups or AHL level. The forwards were atrocious defensively. The top 6 consisted of the worst defensive line in hockey in Connor-Scheifele-Wheeler. The second line was worse. The Lowry line was drowning because of their assignments.

Brossoit put up a .895 that season, and I don't even think he played poorly.

Hellebuyck was the only reason they made the play-ins that year. He was incredible.
