For proper and successful rebuild you need to have few good veterans who can guide and mentor your young core.
Currently, Habs are ok in defence with Savard, Edmundson and even Matheson providing solid leadership for next D generation of Guhle, Xhekaj, Harris, Barron.
There is a big problem in offense where Monahan and Gallagher are the only veteran mentors, but they are injured most of the time. Who are the veteran forwards you would consider for next year? I have filtered all UFAs 30+ below

Anderson at 28 has the 'A' when Gallagher has been hurt, and is also considered a veteran presence. Perhaps Dvorak too is a youngish vet turning 27 this year.

Why do we need veterans in the middle of a rebuild? We need to get rid of them, they're useless to us.
I am not talking about vets like Dadonov who is really useless. Suzuki 23, Caufield and Dach 21, Slaf 18 they all could benefit from good mentor in the locker room. I was thinking about someone like Jordan Staal.

Correct, I forgot to mention Anderson. Dvorak is too silent and introvert to be a good mentor IMO. You need someone who actively works with the young core.

Yeah I'm not sure if Jordan Staal would be thrilled about coming to Montreal to mentor our young players. And he's 34 years old, totally useless to us. The guy who could have mentored our young players was traded to Colorado last year.

If Monahan were healthy, I would extend him for 1-2 years. I don't think he will command a high cap hit and he isn't stealing anyone's ice time.

But the health is a big 'if'. I don't have a good feeling right now about his hips, and am waiting for an update like everyone else.

Hard to have any opinion about Monahan since Habs won't update us about his condition. I think he's close to being done in the NHL but he was supposed to be done last year and surprised us this year when he wasn't injured.

Not the kind of guy I would sign for 2 more years.

Calgary payed a premium to get rid of Monahan because of his health and he’s missed two months and counting with us as well. It’s a shame because he is still capable of being a good player but he’ll be finished soon due to injuries. We should just move on.

In my opinion you need a top-6 forward and a top-4 defenseman for next year. I would go for older stopgaps who can be traded at the 2024 or 2025 deadline for more picks.

Eventually though, and depending on how our prospects pan out, Hughes may need to pull a big trade for an impact player or two, someone that will stay on the team and make us a cup contender. We don't have anyone trending towards being a true #1 D nor a true #1 goalie, for exemple

Does Dvorak even still play on the Habs? He hasn't gotten a point in like 3 months. What a disastrous nightmare of a player.

Well, technically, last points he had were 7 games ago, January 17th, 2 assists against Winnipeg.

But overall, you're right, even when he's there, he really doesn't give a f***.

I'm down to re-sign Monahan. Savard has been alright also.

The rest can f*** off. Bunch of cowards.

I believe the goal is to mentor the kids before we are ready to contend, not necessarily during. The vet being old doesn't mean he's useless.

For example, Perry would have been an awesome mentor, even if he has only 1-3 years left of hockey in him.

The goal here is not to find a long term fixture, it's to find a short term mentor to help the growth of our young players.

I see your point but it's not needed. Someone like J Staal is not signing with the Habs. The right strategy here is to see what is left after the UFA spending period and consider a 1 or 2 year deal on guys like J Staal. If it don't make sense, don't do it.

We have enough vets for our rebuild/transition years and we need to leave some open spots for Barron, Ylonen, RHP, Heineman, Farrell.

As long as we're talking about a vet that's looking for one or (at most) two more years, fair enough.

Pick up a few vets that have won a cup and are looking to hang on for another year, no more Hoffman or Armia types.
Those were the mistakes of a prior administration. I gotta give HuGo the benefit of the doubt that they won't replicate those types of signings. But if they do ... they ought to be called out on them, just as we did for Bergevin. A turd is a turd is a turd.

I am not talking about signing bunch of UFAs vets and pretend to be cup contender. I want to continue the process of rebuild, but I want couple good veteran mentors for young guys. They do not even have to be top performers, 3rd line is OK.
Players like Hoffman, Drouin, Dadonov, Dvorak or Armia are definitely not good mentors. As a rebuilding you will replace them with young blood, but I would be also looking for couple vets with reasonable 1-2 year contract.

Anderson is 29 next season if he is not a vet then there's a problem.
