Friedman: Vancouver trying to trade Vincent Desharnais

Also add: Beauvillier, Pearson, and Dickinson to the list of contracts dumped. Dickinson was the first and only one that had some pain to it, giving up a 2nd straight up with nothing useful back.

It seems unlikely but Allvin is good at this.

Tanner Pearson is useful player. The Canucks traded him after his signing bonus and sent a 3rd the other way. He was traded, because the Canucks needed a goalie.

Beauvillier was an established NHLer, on an expiring contract, who had 28 points in 55 games for the Canucks, but had a history of strong play on the islanders.

Lmao

For fringe guys, there’s no guarantees. Zero. No guarantees you’ll be able to produce the same. No guarantee of health. There isn’t even a guarantee you make the team following year.

The literal smartest thing to do is get that bag if it’s being offered.

Not always. In Vinny's case he was an extremely unique piece in an extremely unique defensive system. With another year of similar results under Knoblauch it would have been much less risky for the Oilers (or other teams) to offer him a 3-4 year deal over the 2 year contract Vancouver ultimately gave him. Plus with the rising cap he would've gotten the same kind of increase anyway even if he'd stayed in the same role.

Now instead of 1-2 years @ $1-$1.5M ($2-3M total) plus let's say $2M x 4 ($8M) for a minimum of $10M in future earnings, he's a healthy scratch with the Canucks already and few teams will be open to taking a risk on him mid-season. He might even end up on waivers if Vancouver can't engineer a trade, so that's 50% of this contract out the window and an even steeper hill to climb next season.

Kostin is in the same boat. Had he stayed in Edmonton and picked up some freebie points from McDrai while remaining a universal fan favorite, the odds he would have signed a longer-term deal this or last summer for similar money as to what SJ gave him a year early would be pretty good. Instead he's a RFA at year's end who likely goes unqualified and either has to go the PTO route or return to Russia.

It's unmitigated greed and guys listening to their agents (who are chasing a commission, duh) over making good decisions for their futures that leads to this kind of thing. I doubt though they will be the last.

And to think Edmonton fans were saying, 15 months ago, that Desharnais made acquiring a guy like Edmundson redundant
VD played really well in Edmonton up to the finals.

He gave us all we needed and was a perfect fit and locker room guy for what he was and at his price.

The contract Vancouver gave him was insane. There was no way he was going to live to up it. During the off season I would have welcomed VD back at 1mil or less.

But there’s a nice long list of Oilers who filled a specific role perfectly but left to chase money and just failed with higher expectations.

Can Edmonton even get him with retention? I don't think they get get him back on a retained salary for a year after he played for them. Can someone with more cap knowledge clarify?

If it's allowed, I would offer Josh Brown and a C/D prospect for a retained Desharnais. If retention isn't allowed then I don't see a fit.

No, it absolutely was a thing. “We got a 1st for Chiarot so we’ll get a 1st for Edmundson” was repeated ad nauseam. Heck, there were plenty of fans who were even claiming Montreal wouldn’t have to retain to get a 1st.
That was a year earlier, when he seemed healthy and was still signed for 1.5 years.

Anaheim just paid for the privilege of taking Trouba and his 8m cap hit. If there's consistency, Vancouver will get an asset back for Vinny lol

Shame it didn't work out for him in Van, he's an awesome guy. Teammates loved him in Edmonton but he's tall and almost nothing else. His puck skills are almost non existent.

Glad VD got his money.. Would take him back in EDM is 50% retained as depth #7/8 Dman after testing out what we have in Alec Regula.
Regula seem like a VD type player.

This is the correct answer

Guys like holloway, or even broberg...100% go get your money

Vd was a fringe player that found a niche role on the oilers and filled it exactly how they needed, another year with edm would have served his overall career earnings better imo

Canucks have hit pretty well on their pro scouting under this management team.

They missed on a few depth players but they were cheap to acquire and get rid of.

Mikheyev was the largest mistake but he suffered a major injury in his first preseason and it pretty much sunk his career.

Size on the backend is an obvious organizational philosophy and they thought VD had some untapped potential. They obviously felt pretty strongly about it, assuming he'd have a strong year and if they didn't give him the 2nd year he would be too expensive to retain.

It'll probably be the last time they give multiple years or more than than the minimum to a project player.

VD is fine as a 6-7D and the contract isn’t a big deal at all. Is he good? No, not really but he’s serviceable as a bottom pair, RD with size and toughness.

Jack Johnson still plays in this league so there’s certainly room for Vinny, even if he’s 500k overpaid

i think desharnais is going to magically get "better" starting january 1st. as the league tightens up his skillset of being big becomes more relevant. by the playoffs he'll be a starter when healthy if the canucks don't upgrade on the right side.

i don't think the canucks would move him except to free up cap for an upgrade.

Pearson when the Canucks moved him, was absolutely cooked and pretty much everybody knew it. He'd had about eleventy billion surgeries on his hand and was at the age where slow players get even slower. Especially with huge amounts of time missed in the previous seasons due to injury and not even being able to really consistently train and keep himself in shape.

He had like three good games with the Habs and then became utterly useless dead weight.

Beauvillier also had a history of being "streaky" and putting up points in a top-6 role for a little while, which he did upon arriving with the Canucks...but then did exactly what he's always done, and completely disappeared.

But there is a fair point in there about Ruthervin managing to actually unload some of these guys without "paying" by just being patient and waiting. I think Desharnais deal is within the scope of players who could be attractive enough at that price to certain "rebuilding" type teams. He's still a huge, physical RHD who is by all accounts, a really solid hard working professional and great teammate.

So here's hoping...But to me, it seems more likely to be a part of some other deal as basically a bunch of cap going back the other way on a more expensive, much better defenceman.

Not entirely accurate with the bolded.

Nurse w/Kulak

CF% 60.77
XGF% 62.85
SCF%: 60.068
HDCF%: 60.00

Nurse w/o Kulak:

CF%: 48.81
XGF%: 49.53
SCF%: 49.52
HDCF%: 56.30

Getting out from under the Stone of Ceci has definitely done him a lot of good, but it's Kulak that's truly elevating Nurse's game.
Is it that, or is it not playing with Dermott?

With Dermott he has a 29% xGF
Without Dermott he has a 56.76% xGF

Dmen who are terrible at puck retrievals, terrible puck movers, and who lack foot speed/lateral mobility to defend the rush are not good dmen. Thank god these two are gone from the Oilers. Please never bring in a Dman lacking those qualities ever again.
Still shocked Oilers traded Kesselring but kept Ceci and Desharnais.

The talk at the time was they probably figured the lack of NHL experience was a bigger factor than age when it came to whether he had something more to give, and that big guys can have long developments. That was kind of the case with Joshua, though he was a bit younger when they signed him.

Re-signing him would have been a problem. He’s not worth his deal in year 1
I think he would have taken less to stay on the Canucks. Also, you can’t really judge him based on his stats on the Bruins in this small sample size. Noone on that team can score.
