Honestly...

He'd be a fan favorite in Montreal considering the season is already wasted

If Vancouver wants any of Armia, Dvorak, or Savard retained on expiring deals a bigger deal can be worked out, or Barron.

If not just do it for a pick

Flip at the next deadline. Someone will have injuries and want a big RHD for $1m for a 4th.
Because it's hard to find a #7 damn, who can't really play NHL level hockey. He's also signed for another year, so whoever takes him would have to pay him for that long. Why? If it was that easy, just sign a guy this summer for cheaper.

I'm not surprised at all that Vinny isn't working out in Vancouver. He worked in Edmonton in a very specific role - #6 shut down defenseman, and net front PK precense. He isn't really an NHL defenseman, he was in the best possible situation he could have been in last year, and was still a 6/7 who only received regular ice time because the Oilers had nobody else to clear the front of the net outside of Ekholm. Emberson looks much better as the #6 than Desharnais did. I wouldn't mind bringing him back, but it would need to be at 50% salary, and I wouldn't give up anything of value to get him. That's the dollar figure he should have been signed for in the summer. I'm glad he got his life changing payday, but I wouldn't want the Oil to be paying that much for him. The Desharnais at 50% for Josh Brown suggestion was exactly fair to me.

The Canucks will trade for a top 4 D from some team and they will take him back as a cap dump, that team will try and get something of value at the next deadline, it's not that hard to imagine.

This is probably the only way to trade Vinnie without having to eat half of the salary or get back an equally bad contract. We'll there is a team out there that wants to take on a $2M #7 defenseman for another full season though. It's not hard to imagine, but it might be hard to actually finalize a deal like that. The top 4 defenseman that Vancouver is looking for will be in high demand. Not every team will have to send back a cap dump.

Well, I've legit never watched him play (well, I've watched hockey games in which he's gotten minutes, but never actually noticed him whatsoever), but I do have an account at HockeyViz...

...and that makes it look like he can be described as "G-ddamn, that boy sure can clear the crease! ...dunno if he can do anything else at all, but he for sure clears the crease!"

I imagine that would have value to somebody somewhere.

Not every team would have to send back a cap dump, but Desharnais would be in lieu of $2m retention, which can be moved for a late pick. Pittsburgh, for example, only has one spot left, which they might want to save for a bigger deal at the deadline or the draft.

It was never going to be a good contract but Vinny is a good guy and if you are a team that can ignore the money looking for a 6/7 tweener you could do worse. He is full marks for being an elite penalty killer if nothing else.

It won't be a team making the playoffs but I bet Vancouver finds a taker.

Oh you mean Ceci and Desharnais weren't actually the pillars of the Oilers D? I see Edmonton is in the top 8 again this year in best goals against as they were last year under Knoblaugh. Big shock. Nurse is having a very nice bounce back season freed of pylons like Desharnais and Ceci.
Stecher and Emberson have done a really nice job for us, but the real MVP is Brett Kulak. He makes Nurse look like the guy he's paid to be.

Feel bad for Vinny. He has his uses (PK numbers aren't bad) but he skates like his skates have been welded to the ice. He worked best in an 11-7 setup where he was kept away from the speedy guys.

Having a very strong partner like Kulak (hey, look, him again) helped him out a lot too.

The only thing that helps reduce the cost of getting rid of him is he a right shot which teams still need.

still cost them something, just less.

I'm just happy that he got paid. Such a great story and he deserved to make a bit of money even if it's not working out. Having said that, I'm not sure the Oilers are a great landing spot for Desharnais with Stetcher, Emberson and now potentially Regula all taking on depth roles.

The per year salary was fine the 2nd year was not. 3rd pairing guys are always available not sure why we needed to add second year on a player we didn't even know worked here.
Fans tend to hate these deals but depth defensemen do tend to get more on the free market like this. It's not Jim Benning running the team anymore who'd just give agents an extra year and an extra mil, for the contract Canucks signed here it's likely there were other teams with similar competing offers. So there's probably still teams that would be interested with the contract as is.

Lets give credit where its due here. Nurse's resurgence hasn't only been because of Kulak. He looks great regardless of who is on his pair this year.

That, along with Ceci's play in SJ this year, makes you wonder if he wasn't more of anchor than we realized.

Poolman had value because he was on LTIR and actually have the Avs more cap flexibility.

Kuzmenko was part of an awful Lindholm deal that saw the Canucks up a top prospect and a 1st.

Mikheyev, I'll give you. He had 31 points playing for the Canucks, and 28 in 46 the year before. So easier to move than Desharnais. The Canucks retained 15% and swapped a 2nd for a 4th. Still good assessment by the Canucks to identify that Mikheyev was not very good.
Also add: Beauvillier, Pearson, and Dickinson to the list of contracts dumped. Dickinson was the first and only one that had some pain to it, giving up a 2nd straight up with nothing useful back.

It seems unlikely but Allvin is good at this.

The team needed to add a D, and the coaching staff spoke to Desharnais beforehand and I guess thought they could help him along.

Evidently they couldn't, and he will end up a Penguin or Duck in a trade for Pettersson or Fowler.

Also, Allvin is definitely the best GM in the league at getting bad contracts off the books. Poolman, Kuzmenko, and Mikheyev for minimal cost.
New contender has entered the ring. Drury getting rid of Trouba was a home run of dumping a bad contract.

Desharnais was played ahead of Broberg, leading to Broberg being frustrated and leaving at the first chance he could.

So ya, bring back Vinnie. That will heal the wound and improve the Oiler D.🙃

Like someone else had said, good for Vinny for getting the bag in Vancouver. I will always appreciate how his surprise emergence provided the Oilers with a perfect #6 D man for peanuts. He eventually hit a time when he maxed out his abilities and could not keep up though
