That's exactly what I was thinking.Retain half and take back Josh Brown.

Because it's hard to find a #7 damn, who can't really play NHL level hockey. He's also signed for another year, so whoever takes him would have to pay him for that long. Why? If it was that easy, just sign a guy this summer for cheaper.Flip at the next deadline. Someone will have injuries and want a big RHD for $1m for a 4th.
In this case, "cost controlled" doesn't help, because that cost is being paid twice his value.I'm sure there's a team out there that would take a chance on a big RHD that's cost controlled for next year who they can try and flip.
Or someone take him back as a cap dump.

This is probably the only way to trade Vinnie without having to eat half of the salary or get back an equally bad contract. We'll there is a team out there that wants to take on a $2M #7 defenseman for another full season though. It's not hard to imagine, but it might be hard to actually finalize a deal like that. The top 4 defenseman that Vancouver is looking for will be in high demand. Not every team will have to send back a cap dump. The Canucks will trade for a top 4 D from some team and they will take him back as a cap dump, that team will try and get something of value at the next deadline, it's not that hard to imagine.
I really hate that second year of 2 million. We all know he’s going to be thrown into the (Marcus) Pettersson trade. These teams need to stop flirting and just get it done.

Stecher and Emberson have done a really nice job for us, but the real MVP is Brett Kulak. He makes Nurse look like the guy he's paid to be.Oh you mean Ceci and Desharnais weren't actually the pillars of the Oilers D? I see Edmonton is in the top 8 again this year in best goals against as they were last year under Knoblaugh. Big shock. Nurse is having a very nice bounce back season freed of pylons like Desharnais and Ceci.
Fans tend to hate these deals but depth defensemen do tend to get more on the free market like this. It's not Jim Benning running the team anymore who'd just give agents an extra year and an extra mil, for the contract Canucks signed here it's likely there were other teams with similar competing offers. So there's probably still teams that would be interested with the contract as is.The per year salary was fine the 2nd year was not. 3rd pairing guys are always available not sure why we needed to add second year on a player we didn't even know worked here.
Lets give credit where its due here. Nurse's resurgence hasn't only been because of Kulak. He looks great regardless of who is on his pair this year.Stecher and Emberson have done a really nice job for us, but the real MVP is Brett Kulak. He makes Nurse look like the guy he's paid to be.
Feel bad for Vinny. He has his uses (PK numbers aren't bad) but he skates like his skates have been welded to the ice. He worked best in an 11-7 setup where he was kept away from the speedy guys.
Having a very strong partner like Kulak (hey, look, him again) helped him out a lot too.
Also add: Beauvillier, Pearson, and Dickinson to the list of contracts dumped. Dickinson was the first and only one that had some pain to it, giving up a 2nd straight up with nothing useful back.Poolman had value because he was on LTIR and actually have the Avs more cap flexibility.
Kuzmenko was part of an awful Lindholm deal that saw the Canucks up a top prospect and a 1st.
Mikheyev, I'll give you. He had 31 points playing for the Canucks, and 28 in 46 the year before. So easier to move than Desharnais. The Canucks retained 15% and swapped a 2nd for a 4th. Still good assessment by the Canucks to identify that Mikheyev was not very good.

New contender has entered the ring. Drury getting rid of Trouba was a home run of dumping a bad contract. The team needed to add a D, and the coaching staff spoke to Desharnais beforehand and I guess thought they could help him along.
Evidently they couldn't, and he will end up a Penguin or Duck in a trade for Pettersson or Fowler.
Also, Allvin is definitely the best GM in the league at getting bad contracts off the books. Poolman, Kuzmenko, and Mikheyev for minimal cost.
