Surely they could find some sports communications major looking to intern or break into the industry for the radio gig - the pay could be peanuts? How much worse could it be?

its more than the individual's pay that is the issue. Travel to games and all of the costs associated, equipment, maintaining and moving equipment too.

Yet, other teams somehow swing it for positive and reinforced engagement with the fans of their team.
Yet other teams probably have a much higher radio listeners and in turn much higher commercial prices. Or they love bleeding money. Two things the Canes don’t do or have.

I know I'm in the minority, but I had a hard time listening to Chuck on the radio. The pitch changes and speed at which he often talked wasn't to my liking. I realize it's because he was telling you virtually everything that was going on in the game, which is impressive.

You’re not alone on that. Chuck is the Canes version of a Mike Emrick or Rick Jeanneret. The nostalgia runs very heavy for a guy who’s maybe average at the actual job.

The Canes exist at an intersection of being a small overall media market and being a niche interest locally. That’s just the brutal reality of what it means to be an NHL team in Raleigh, and in most aspects it’s totally fine. But when it comes to selling radio ads we are quite possibly in 32nd place when it comes to ROI for an advertiser. At a certain point the lack of ROI means the broadcast ceases to exist, or is done with near-zero overhead like what we’re doing with the simulcast.

(This same principle applies to why we don’t have as a wide a variety of merch available as other teams, are rarely on national TV, etc)
