Shayna Goldman likes this one for Detroit.

Coversely though..He's a 25 year old RHD who is in the top 20 scoring for NHL D......Pretty much the kind of player you would hope to draft with your 15th OA

Not the kind of defenseman we needed but I'm guessing they are going to move Miller to recoup draft picks and clear cap space. I'll be patient to see what they have planned before I judge this deal.

Hronek is a good player. But he's not an upgrade...at defending. He's more of an offensive/PP specialist. Half of his points this season are on the PP - and we know he's not supplanting Hughes on the Canucks PP.

He's not even really a "puck-moving" defenseman because he's not great at exiting the zone with control. He's not great at retrieving the puck under pressure. He's very poor at defending in transition. These things are all major weaknesses of the Canucks which Hronek doesn't fill.
Hronek has 22 even strength points. That alone would put him second on the Canucks in defenseman scoring. How is he not an upgrade?

This group has been right about most of their professional player decisions so I'll trust their evaluation of Hronek until proven otherwise.

Might not know exactly where NYI ends up but it looked pretty likely we would be in a position to pick up a very good prospect. Among many of us there was real hope that something would fall to us. This is a very good and deep draft and having two prime choices seemed to a way of laying a basis for the future. Second was important as well. Now that is gone.

Hronek is not worth giving up the potential we gave up in this trade IMO. He has some offensive upside and had a good start to the season but then was wiped out by Reaves and then hurt in Ottawa. At this point looks very injury prone and is likely damaged goods. And when have we picked up damaged goods before. Like often.

There is a reason why Yserman is giving up on him and reason why Yserman will develop his team into a contender while we remain a League bottom feeder and patsy.

What really grates is the underlying philosophy. The fans are dying for a rebuild which it seemed the team had finally committed to. Instead we are back into the bandaging over shortcomings. And there is no guarantee that Hronek is anything like a decent bandage.

It is sad to be a fan of this franchise. The rot starts at the top and nothing can change until we get someone with character there.

My one hope is that Hronek might be injured to the extent that the trade can be negated.

Well on the plus side he does fill a need. However, its not a rebuilding move, and when this team is ready to compete, he will be done. The short sighted sell tickets now strategy in Vancouver is going to keep biting this ownership group.

Hopefully fans will learn that trades like this are not a way to build a cup contender. Its just more of the same dumb knee jerk trades that cost our picks and future.

I’m fine with the player but we overpaid given the Chychrun trade for a better player.
And we really should be stock piling picks and building through the draft like every other successful franchise. We’ve been taking shortcuts for the last 9 years with predictable results.

The real question remains, what are Mr Aquilini's plans for our own first round pick?

This has had me in suspense for months now and it's getting close to crunch time.

Yup and the team is already over the cap for next season, has little in the way of cheap ELC, has a number of holes to fill, and also have to sign EP.
EP has one more year on his contract.....but they will likely want to sign him during the summer, as they did with JT, so we don't have to go through the whole season wondering if we can get him signed, like we did with Bo, and then have to trade him!

We overpaid, will miss out big time on a strong draft, and instead get a 25 yr old rather than a couple of players with years of ELC (which are long shots but WTF). All in all I am disappointed that we caved to FA wish to speed up the process. I think we f***ed up big time. This will make us slightly less mediocre in the short term, and screw up our optimism 3 - 5 years from now.

He’s cost controlled for one more season before he’ll be looking for $8M+ longterm.

Bro, Hronek is not going to make close to $8M LMAO. What are you smoking bud?

If he does, it means he's a legitimate top 20 defensemen in the NHL. I'd be happy to pay him that much if he blossomed into a top defensemen.

3rd time I've asked you to provide a source for these "reports" you always seem to have

I think you're making it up

What a stupid post.

Somewhere in the hundreds of pages that have cycled through this board in the last day or two someone posted a tweet or something saying that GMs had questions about Chychrun defensively. Why on earth would I make that up?

If you want to find it, feel free.

But this isn’t some big secret.

Here’s a couple articles from January referencing defensive question marks.

Frank Seravalli said:
Teams believe Chychrun is an average middle pair guy as a defender.

That’s probably the most tapped-in source in the NHL right now telling you that teams don’t rate Chychrun defensively.

Take a look at comparable players. His hockey card stats are comparable to Sergachev. Jared Spurgeon is another one. Difference being those two are a lot better defensively but that’s not a consideration when you play big minutes and put up points as a defenseman.

Hronek will be lucky to get 7M.

8M+...

BC bud hitting good.

Your getting a 25 year old sure thing (and a RHD to boot)..This player is inline with the age of EP,QH,TD...I dont think FA had anything to do with this, JR sets the course for hockey ops, and he initiated a 2 year retool...as he said he would when first hired.

We still have our own pick, which will more than likely be in the top 7-8.

Well the early rumours were that Pittsburg was the dance partner in a trade involving Miller, but now Friedman is reporting that Mikael Granlund is the Pens target and the return is a 2nd rounder.
