i lived in ann arbor/detroit (okay technically canton) for most of hronek's career. i've seen a ton of him
Well if he isn’t an improvement on Myers then this was a disaster of a trade. I don’t seem to get that impression from Red Wings fans who watched all of his games though. I think he’ll be a big improvement on what we have given other scouting reports and the raw numbers. Can you elaborate a bit and compare Hronek’s qualities you’ve observed with what we have now so I can understand you better?

Team that has the worst RD depth in the league goes out and acquires a 25 year old cost controlled #2/3 RD.

Canucks fans: "THIS MAKES ZERO SENSE THO"
Canucks that need Dmen who can defend add one who’s been shakey in his own zone most of his career outside of 40 games.

I think this is a bit harsh but you also can't expect your team to improve defensively & on the PK without acquiring good defensive defensemen. Hronek/Bear types aren't going to cut it.

i don't think he's worse than myers. i just think his play is very much similar to myers. both of them can skate pretty well and have decent puck skills when not under pressure but both are prone to turnovers and mistakes when pressured and both of them frequently look like they have no idea what to do in their own end

i think hronek is slightly less of a disaster in his own end but myers has an advantage with his reach and his mobility. hronek legitimately has a good shot though which is something myers lacks. point shots are kind of out of vogue in the nhl these days but it is a tool hronek possesses

I finally calmed down, I still hate that trade because of the direction this team is gonna go

This is what I feel a lot of people accusing others of "doomsaying" are missing. It isn't that we think Hronek sucks or that we made some massive overpayment. It's that we're trying the same damn thing we've been doing for a decade now and hoping this time it'll all work out.

Canucks fans: YOU HAVENT IMPROVED THE DEFENSE AT ALL WHAT ARE YOU DOING??? MORE WINGS???

Toxic ass fanbase.
Your black / white oversimplifications really don't do much to move the conversation forward.

Most agree this is a decent player.
This isn't a deal you make now because it doesn't leverage the full power of the picks.
It's an overpayment because you're paying for a player at a new peak. It's always riskier to buy high, because the player has to continue to play at that level just to meet expectations.
It doesn't match up well to where they're presently sitting in the standings, and thus it weakens your own picks values, of which the Canucks no longer have a surplus, so that matters even more.
It's another small defender who's known (by his own fan base) to be most productive on the PP and isn't great on the defensive end of the game. So other than being a better player than most of the junk the Canucks have, it's a huge payment for a player who's not the ideal fit for the club.
The previous teams fans were generally surprised by the overpayment for the player.
The player is cost controlled for one full season.

These are just a few very reasonable criticisms of the trade.

You use the bolded so frequently, you should just make it your tag line. It will likely save you hours of typing.

Or one that understands that we just overpaid for an asset that doesn’t fully meet our needs.

I would like this trade more if Hronek was signed for more years at his current contract.
I would too. It’s why the comparison to Devon Toews makes me laugh. Even if he has that sort of impact, Hughes/Hronek is going to be a $15M pairing 15 months from now.

How hard did Stevie Y laugh at this trade when done?

Honestly.

WTF.
“Didn’t Benning get fired?”

Yup and the team is already over the cap for next season, has little in the way of cheap ELC, has a number of holes to fill, and also have to sign EP.
