Not surprising some over the top takes and overrating draft picks.

Hronek is not a bad outcome for a mid 1st, actually its a very good outcome. And you don't have to wait years and the timeline aligns much better with the core.

The question is how he fits on this team, with Hughes, he'll have to carry his own 2nd pairing and offer mostly EV production. He's also not overly big and I wouldn't say great defensively.
You also get the privilege of giving him a big UFA contract after next season!

Ya Chych is better, and bigger, and a year younger, but has had more injury issues and is a leftie and contract not as good. Plus they paid significantly more — mostly the Ott 1st is better, also its +a 2nd and minus a 4th, so easy on the hyperbole there….

Hronek was absolutely blowing up early this year, stole the spotlight from Seider … he is a solid young RHD with upside, i actually thought he would be untouchable for them (despite their and his recent troubles overall.)

I get it ppl want a full rebuild, but that aint happening with EP and QH here, and this is what this is — EP lube, to get him to hang around and sign here. Yeah we couldve had a Reinbacher of someone …but by the time they mature EP likely gone. So now we have the best young RHD we’ve had since i dunno, Edler(?) not another dino in their 30s. So recoup draft capital with Boeser or (more hopefully) Miller trade and we’re in much better shape, esp if we dump Myers this summer.

Edit - also, im willing to bet with the cap jam they are in now they must certainly have another move planned to clear out a forward, hopefully for picks. (If not ….well, i take it all back pretty much)

We went from celebrating a potential Boeser for Pettersson heist and hoping the Canucks play 3rd team broker in deals to this.

Unreal mood swing lol
It's funny, because if we did get that Pettersson POJ deal, we'd have this on D:

Hughes-Bear
Pettersson-Hronek
Wolanin-POJ? POJ-Wolanin? Idk if either of them can play off-handed.

That'd be a hell of a lot better. I don't think we were ever getting those pieces for Boeser, let alone both, so it's a pipe dream. But fun to imagine.

I'd argue that Hronek has played in a much more stable environment this year than Chychrun has in years.

And Chychrun to my eye is much more reliable defensively and someone I'd be okay with lining up against top lines, freeing up Hughes on his own pair. Hronek is not a guy I'd want defending against top lines.

Their usage has actually tended toward the opposite. JJ Moser and Josh Brown play the high-leverage defensive minutes for Arizona and Chychrun and Gostisbehere are given the creamy offensive minutes.

To be honest, I would’ve been more mad if we got Chychrun.

Chychrun and Hronek are/were NOT what we need right now.

Alot of fun things to imagine, like having two first round draft picks.

We could still draft Reinbacher with our own 1st.

And Reinbacher is unlikely available at the NYI pick. Would be surprised if he's not going top 10.

It's actually really interesting. Perception - and I include myself in this - is that Chychrun is worth WAY more than Hronek.

But they're the same age from the same draft, basically identical production, same cap hit, same TOI, both have some defensive questions (we've heard reports in the last day or so that concerns about Chychrun's defense were limiting his value), Hronek is more physical, Hronek is a RHS. Chychrun is bigger and has more pedigree.

Now, I'd be happier as an Ottawa fan with their trade, obviously. But I don't think the difference between these players is quite as huge as being made out.
Thank you for your perspective of stuff i don’t know about.

And without Miller, we'd be even worse. In contention for Bedard with our pick.

What could have been. A real shot at Bedard, four 1sts over a 2 year period, 3 good prospects, and a good young roster player.

Why on earth did we not do this
Because those don’t help you compete next season

was him being scratched on october 23rd 2021 indicative of a pattern of bad defensive play for the entire season?

i say this as someone who watched him extensively his first three seasons but not the season in question: yes

I think that was more about pumping and dumping those two, but time will tell. I've read that private analytic models are actually high on Chychrun defensively and eye test wise he's always looked fine defensively to me.

Hronek is the one who can be an adventure at times, but he's a damn good offensive dman.

Two separate pairings is one option and trying to tilt the ice with an ultra-skilled Makar-Toews pairing is the other option. I imagine both will be tried.

Playing with Toews instead of some big defensive guy certainly hasn't held back Makar, and quite the exact opposite.

Hronek basically has to be Toews+ in order for the Canucks to be even close to being anywhere near a contender in these next three years.

Sure, we have Pettersson who is maybe close to MacKinnon. Miller who produces (for now) somewhat like Rantanen. Hughes ~= Makar. Demko was (is?) better than any goalie the Avs have had since Roy, and makes up for some of the gaps in the previous comparisons.

And then the comps start to fall short. We have nothing resembling the skill and ability of Landeskog, Kadri, Byram, Nichushkin, Lekhonen, etc.

That's the problem. As others have said, even if this is the JT Miller trade - an absolute pro scouting coup - is that enough? Hronek is obviously an NHL'er, so it sets a floor, but that NYI pick might legit offer a chance at a player like Michkov. That honestly feels like the only path the Canucks could have had out of perpetual mediocrity, and we've now slammed that door shut.

If this was following a Boeser for POJ + 2nd trade, maybe we could feel better. But as it stands, the team next year is most likely headed for a 20th place finish with the same stale, overpriced core.

Well and if people read that link.

"Hronek will not play Saturday versus the Canadiens.

Hronek isn't listed with any injury, so it's possible head coach Jeff Blashill is sitting the 23-year-old after he went minus-2 in an ugly 3-0 loss to the Flames on Thursday. If Hronek is hurt, there should be some information about him after the game -- if not, consider this a healthy scratch for the young Czech defenseman."

I guess he was not hurt it sounds like? But we need more information on this. Blashill also got fired.

One big difference is that Toews has top notch numbers at preventing controlled zone entries and at exiting the zone with possession, which helps Makar keep the puck moving in the right direction and not have to spend too much time defending.

Hronek grades out quite poorly on both measures, so it’s not clear he will help Hughes the same way.
Not only that but Colorado got Toews for four years at $4.1M. We’ll get Hronek for 1 year at $4M before he’ll be looking at $7M longterm. Terrible value.

That Isles’ pick will likely be entertaining the NHL on a tidy ELC when we’re cursing Hronek on year 2 of his new contract. Can’t wait!
