This trade stinks.

the hronek trade looks terrible when you compare it to the marino trade, the romanov trade or the chychryn trade. it looks about the same (maybe better) than the lundqvist trade
Lundqvist is a AAAA player, that trade is much worse.

It's all about the ES points.

Hughes can succeed with a guy like Schenn, he doesn't need much help. If anything Hronek with Hughes might actually mean less possession time for Hughes and not provide a net scoring boost to the team. That's why I think he's not Hughes long term partner. They will try to get two pairings rolling offensively at ES, one around Hughes and one around Hronek. Hronek on the PP is irrelevant as Hughes will dominate time.
This is some galaxy brain stuff, like when y2k would rage about the Sedins and exclusive points or whatever other nonsense. Play good player with good player.

It's actually really interesting. Perception - and I include myself in this - is that Chychrun is worth WAY more than Hronek.

But they're the same age from the same draft, basically identical production, same cap hit, same TOI, both have some defensive questions (we've heard reports in the last day or so that concerns about Chychrun's defense were limiting his value), Hronek is more physical, Hronek is a RHS. Chychrun is bigger and has more pedigree.

Now, I'd be happier as an Ottawa fan with their trade, obviously. But I don't think the difference between these players is quite as huge as being made out.

Tell me more good things please.

haven't read the thread, so these points have probably been made already...

At first glance, don't like giving up two high picks. Feels like a big overpayment.

Makes me think there's a deal in place for Myers after his bonus is paid. Or at least enough interest that Alvin knows he will be able to move him relatively easy.

Second pairing definitely has room to fit a good puck mover. Would Petterson-Hronek be an improved second pairing?

As a general rule, I'm okay with a GM getting their guy. But on the surface, don't see why Hronek is the guy they targeted. I mean Bear and Hronek improve our right side, but we are transitioning into one of the smallest, least physical bluelines in the league at this rate.

Show me the reports

I'm not going to search umpteen pages of threads for it - someone posted it yesterday I think.

Chychrun got buried at the start of 21-22 when they tried using him as a high-leverage defensive guy and this year he's playing with Gostisbehere on a pure offensive pairing while Moser soaks up the D-zone starts and matchup minutes.

Not sure if it was mentioned yet, But they didn't even weaponize there extra cap space for more picks instead they used it on Hronek which pushes them over (or close to) the cap for next season which puts them in an even further position of weakness when trying to dump contracts. 🤡
We went from celebrating a potential Boeser for Pettersson heist and hoping the Canucks play 3rd team broker in deals to this.

Unreal mood swing lol

You know who else looked really good as a young defenseman in Arizona? Keith Ballard and Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

Let's see how Chychrun does in Detroit. Personally I'm wary of how good he'll be on a playoff team given the fact that he played like 30 minutes a game and got all the best ice time in Arizona.

Not surprising some over the top takes and overrating draft picks.

Hronek is not a bad outcome for a mid 1st, actually its a very good outcome. And you don't have to wait years and the timeline aligns much better with the core.

The question is how he fits on this team, with Hughes, he'll have to carry his own 2nd pairing and offer mostly EV production. He's also not overly big and I wouldn't say great defensively.

lundqvist is a worse player but the dallas pick is significantly worse than the islanders pick. arguably it was expected to be even worse when dallas traded it

Could you not apply this same logic to Hronek playing on shit Detroit teams?

OEL was a stud, injuries ruined him

The copium in here is out of control.

at this point, do you think its crazy expecting us to get back a first round from Pittsburgh for miller?

Dont know Hronek well enough but dont like trading a 1st hope this is part of other deals being worked on but still ffs hold the picks

Weaponizing extra cap space is like some competent GM move. Why would you expect that??

3rd time I've asked you to provide a source for these "reports" you always seem to have

I think you're making it up

What? Over rating a top 15 pick? You admit he's not good defensively when this team already can't play defense.

NYI 1st (teens)
Lundqvist
Chytil
1st (20s)
And without Miller, we'd be even worse. In contention for Bedard with our pick.

What could have been. A real shot at Bedard, four 1sts over a 2 year period, 3 good prospects, and a good young roster player.

Why on earth did we not do this

Two separate pairings is one option and trying to tilt the ice with an ultra-skilled Makar-Toews pairing is the other option. I imagine both will be tried.

Playing with Toews instead of some big defensive guy certainly hasn't held back Makar, and quite the exact opposite.
One big difference is that Toews has top notch numbers at preventing controlled zone entries and at exiting the zone with possession, which helps Makar keep the puck moving in the right direction and not have to spend too much time defending.

Hronek grades out quite poorly on both measures, so it’s not clear he will help Hughes the same way.
